St. John's vs. Towson exhibition

I never understood the need for some people to stick up for other teams on this board. It seems like they actually get angry if you don't think another team is good.
Bizzare.

There’s a strange Pitino fan base here. Always found it interesting .

Also, unrelated but according to Trilly Houston lost to Ole Miss tonight 70-56

No one knows how good or bad they’ll be. All hot takes. The argument that they won’t be good feels more like a disgust of a heavy portal roster. Pope got to the S16 with a brand new roster last year, and those players weren’t even that good. It can work, perhaps to a limit.

He's a tremendous coach and typically gets his teams to play at a high level. The only question I see with St. Johns, this year v. last year, is that last year's team was built on a lot of guys who transferred in as more role players (no alphas). This year, you have a lot of guys who transferred who see themselves as NBA players, go to guys, etc. He will need to mold them into a group willing to defer to others at times and willing to do little things. That's the key, will some of those guys accept a secondary role or will they not do the little things that his team was willing to do last year to win. I would likely bet on the former but I can't dismiss the latter. That's why they are so fascinating to watch this year.

Yeah, that's it.

I said they’d make the sweet 16.

There are AP voters who had them top 3. They aren’t a final 4 team to me. Hence they’re overrated

You aren’t the only one talking in this thread. I’m responding to to conversation as a whole.
Yes, but when you 'reply' to a post from a poster and you are commenting on something they said in their post, you cannot just up and change the words and information they stated to fit what you want to say. You cannot pull in other comments from the 'conversation as a whole' i.e. other posters, and make it sound like the poster you are replying to said any of these things.

Can’t see a brand new team with no PG gelling together.

That alone is a recipe for disaster. Wonder who’s going to have a better year between them and Marquette. Should be a good case study.

Fringe top 100 roster of continuity and development vs best transfer roster money can buy

Agreed. Top 20 team. 3 or 4 seed Tourney lock. Bounce out in the sweet 16. Lack of pg bites then in the arse and defense proves to be better in theory than it was in practice.

In no way is this not good. Just not final 4 good.
Projecting them to be maybe a 3 seed and lose in the sweet 16 isn’t really some bold against the grain proclamation that will be worth victory lapping over in March. If you really think they’re so overrated, pick them to be an 8/9 seed 😛

It is when I keep getting push back for saying it. Overrated is overrated. I think there's no shot they make a final 4. They much more Creighton than they are a top 5 team. That's literally overrated. I actually may like Creighton more..

You also said they're going to be a disaster this year. Make up your mind.
Hyperbole. Kill me for it. I don't think they'll be a top 4 seed because theyre great. The BE sucks. They'll win 14-15 games in conference in their sleep. and possibly be a top 2 BE team. If they win 1 or 2 of Baylor, Bama, UK, Iowa State and they'll be on track for a top 4 seed. St Johns will be mid. That's the point

I did not change anything you stated. Nor did I make it sound like you said anything. That's just how you read it. All I did was lump you in with the Johnny Defender Brigade.

They had a a veteran big point guard. Right now they don’t have a point guard. They remind me of our team last year.
They were flawed last season(as is every team) but they had an identity. And they were constructed to be the best at that identity. I just don't see it here. It's a bunch of guys from other programs who think this is their time to shine. Jackson wasn't that good at UNC, Sanon thinks he's an NBA guy, Hopkins quit on his team last year and hasn't played in 2 years. What if Jackson just actually isn't "that good", and what if Hopkins is actually a selfish me first guy(which the evidence suggest)? That team would need a floor general to bring that all together. And that's the one thing they don't have. I don't see it. I think they have enough talent to win the games they should and click a couple of nights to get some good scalps. The BE is weak and they should pad some wins there(as will we). But I don't think they have the make up of champions or final 4 contenders. Zuby is great, Pitino is great, the rest is a HUGE ? What happens if they hit a rough patch? Pitino is alreadty calling Hopkins soft to the media. There are some huge pit falls here that are being ignored because "pitino". They/we did the same thing with Hurley last year.

People see Slick Rick, their 31 wins last year and all the gaudy numbers put up by pretty much the entire new team he picked up in the portal and they conclude SJU is a top 5 team.

The same mistake people make every year. Now in hindsight its "we knew Kansas wasn't going to be good".

It's early and they'll probably be a tough out but this is interesting.

Just Pitino holding his guys accountable to get the most out of them. They’ll probably bounce back playing harder.
Was it last year or the year before when he called out his team in public and they played much better afterwards
