St Johns Postgame Thread

Some thoughts on the St Johns game:

• It's good to see UConn come out with a lot of energy, as they did tonight, pressuring the ball all over the court and attacking the basket on offense.
• There are clearly times when UConn’s best offense is to just have Azzi spot up anywhere beyond the arc and get her the damned ball.
• This past week Geno mentioned that UConn needs to get tougher, and then Nika shows up at the game tonight. Coincidence? I think not!!!
• I loved Ash’s spin-cycle move in the 2nd qtr. I don’t recall seeing that particular move from Ash before, but it sure was a thing of beauty.
• While Paige had 5 blocks tonight, I was a little disappointed that we didn’t see a single double-bicep flex in celebration….
• Jana keeps improving…and she plays with an ATTITUDE. I like that she is starting to track down rebounds rather than hoping the ball bounces her way. She’s not there yet. But it’s coming.
• I really liked Aubrey’s minutes tonight. She had 10 pts, attacked the basket, and was incredibly active with 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals and played great defense.
• BIG GAME coming up on Sunday in Columbia, SC. Can UConn hang with SC’s talent and depth? We shall see……

Overall a fun game to watch!

• Great game from Azzi
• Solid game from Paige
• Really solid defense
• Great seeing Aubrey back doing Aubrey things
• Jana's play in the first half

But let's be real - even after the game Geno said "people ask why can't Azzi do this every game - that's a question I can't answer". Until she and Paige can do that against good teams, it's really just a nice performance against low level competition.

On the not so great side...

• Jana's play in the 4th quarter
• Gave up too many O boards
• 2nd game in a row Sarah wasn't productive - averaging 5 PPG in her last 2 games. Freshman wall?

Bottom line, a really entertaining game. Not sure it was THE game we wanted to see from THE entire team before SC, but let's see what happens Sunday in Columbia.

Lights out shooting by Azzi, Paige had great numbers, I just wish she would shoot more. Aubrey showed she still has game....but what happen in the 4th quarter?...it was a little embarrassing, to me, but I always want them to score 100 or more.

This was the Azzi Fudd show. This is what I've been talking about, they played through Azzi and she converted. From screens to rescreens to passes and repasses, the team got Fudd the ball everytime they could. 22 FGA should be the norm for her. She looked like Steph Curry out there.

I hope they continue to route through her because that is a recipe for success and her shot is what no other team in the country has.

Tonight was an appetizer before the main course on Sunday. Hopefully, between now and then, the team doesn't experience any more player setbacks.

After two relatively subdued games, I'm expecting Sarah to come out and remind Joyce Edwards who the the #1 recruit in the nation was last year.

Seeing Nika tonight had to bring a smile to every Huskie fan, and hopefully lit under a fire under Paige heading into Sundays's marque matchup.

Last, Aubrey doesn't have to score to have an impact on the game. Glad to see that she is getting her sea legs back. Obviously, Azzi did tonight. On most her attempts, she left no doubt her shot was going in.

I hear this. But I truly believe Azzi and Paige can do it against anyone. The shots Azzi takes, she gets it off so quick. Honesty her performance tonight reminded me of the Texas game a couple seasons ago. I get SC or higher level teams may face guard her and not lose her in transition but the team is pretty creative in finding ways to get her open. And then when Azzi is scoring it takes a little pressure off Paige. I always felt she never wanted to take 20+ shots a game. She wants to do a little bit of everything.
Only thing I didn't like was the limited opportunities for Sarah. I hate to be this guy but I would've liked to see her play more in the 4th. I get it, why risk injury. But she has been a bit quiet offensively. I don't want her to lose her aggression.

Incredible game for Azzi. Good game for others, too, including Paige and Aubrey (who is getting some much needed floor time). Sarah had a “quiet” night, but she was still grabbing boards and affecting the game. Tonight the players looked like they were channeling some of Nika’s toughness and energy. And they looked like they were having fun.

Hopefully this was a confidence booster and the players can ride this into Sunday’s big game.

St. John’s had apparently held everyone to under 75 pts all season long. Tonight that streak was broken.

We scored 20+ in three quarters. Only 10 in Q4 doesn’t bother me that much. The game was already over long since over.

I mean the Ole Miss game was a goodie. Azzi was pretty much out against USC. She was out against Notre Dame. She had a poor start and was in foul trouble against Tennessee. I mean they could still bomb this weekend and I'd still be fairly confident. NC State elite 8 game is my go to.

Uconn led in EVERY statisticle category and that is defense that wins games. We play like that against So Carolina, we should win the game. Azzi is fast becoming the AZZI we always knew she was. My hopes are high. GO HUSKIES!!!!!

Really liked:

Azzi having a hot, hot shooting night and sustaining it all game. Such a quick and pretty shot.


The good work Griff did. She has a physical presence that no one else on the team can match.


Not so fond of:

Sarah not being a big part of the offense. I don't know why her offense has disappeared of late but it needs to stop. There is no reason that kid shouldn't get at least 15 points a game.

Great game by Azzi. I was hoping that Geno would have played Strong together with Griffen in the fourth quarter, especially with Azzi and Paige on the bench. I wanted to see how they played as the principal focal points of the offense. The big guy, though, had other ideas . . . .
