St. John's Post Game Thread

They were really bad vs Creighton, that ain't changing

Looks like Creighton woke us up, which is awesome
And it looked even worse after what St. John's did to Creighton beating them by 29. The Creighton game might be a demarcation point for the turnaround, but that should not have been needed because UConn's defense was lousy for the 3 games before. Losing at home to Creighton was a Q3 loss and almost cost UConn a chance at the #1 seed, except games last Saturday went UConn's way.

It seems to me they were pressing us but as you said, so few makes makes it hard to apply constant pressure. Pitino admitted last time the secret is to wear the other team down, not necessarily to get turnovers. But you have to make some shots and that just wasn't happening last night.
That's why I said before the game the best counter to St. John's pressure is probably UConn playing stout half court defense. This eliminates St. John's being able to apply pressure on the inbound passes since that mostly happens after made baskets.

You keep saying this like it has any sort of meaning, it doesn't. Creighton is 79 on KenPom, Xavier is 97 on KenPom. Yet UConn beat them by 23 and 32 points, and St John's beat them by 5 twice.

Spinning this Creighton narrative looked dumb before the St John's game, continuing to say this after we just demolished St John's is something far beyond dumb.

It's honestly hard to complain about anything right now - if you're not hopeful as heck that Hurley knows how to press buttons at the right time after last nights game, not sure what more you need. I was holding out - then grew skeptical given how late in the year it is.

All you want at this point is feeling like they have a really good chance.

Mike captured the extent of that disaster for SJU in a visceral way no print writeup could match.
He was fine until he got to his tourney seeding predictions - said UConn is maybe a 2 seed but “probably” a 3. Then went through his list of contenders and included Houston and ISU but omitted us entirely. Same guy who butchered everyone’s name in his classic impromptu call of the Jalen Adams game, so yeah

Titus is my favorite guy to listen to talking college hoops. He really knows the game, he's funny, and he loves UConn.
I like him too but I remember him taking some pretty big shots at Hurley over the last few years

I was responding to a post that says the Creighton post game thread did not age well. UConn crushed St. John's which is great and we all love it, but that doesn't mean the loss to Creighton was not a downer and all of the sudden that post game thread is moot. To write off that Creighton game is dumb. It's obvious that loss concerned Hurley and he publicly said as much which is most likely the reason UConn has responded with more urgency and elevated their play.

Yes, St. John's struggled with Xavier while UConn blew them out. Here's an important fact: St. John's still won both games against Xavier while UConn lost at home game against Creighton they should've won. Creighton has only won 1 game in their last 5. If they won that game they would be in the driver's seat for the Big East regular season championship and #1 seed in the BET, which means a lot to the players. It's okay to be excited about the St. John's win and still realize the Creighton game was a stinker.

We're still in the driver's seat for the Big East regular season championship. You really think the #1 seed in the Big East tournament means a lot to the players?

This is a particularly sweet post, especially with you as its source.

In the first half, I texted my sister that if they keep it up, it'll be as good as the ♀️team.

In the second half, I said it was ♀️team good.

I know there are followers of both teams, and those who object to such mentions, but there's been particularly good UConn basketball watching this week.

FTR, the Creighton loss was on a day when both teams played the exact same time, without one of the games on an over the airwaves broadcasting feed. Bad mojo.

Are they in the driver's seat? I guess in the sense they would share the BE regular season championship with St. John's if both teams win out. To answer your question, I think finishing as the sole Big East regular season champion means a lot to them, which would necessarily mean the #1 seed in the BET. I remember Kevin Freeman's quote in 1999 when UConn and Miami were neck and neck for the Big East regular season championship and he was asked about how he felt about sharing it with Miami and he said "No. Do you share your girlfriend?". Matt McCall and Jordan Correnette in the Peacock studios echoed a similar sentiment. I think to the players the Big East regular season championship is important, but I am sure they realize it pales in comparison to having success in the NCAAT.

The sequence where, we're up 15 to 11, SJU brings ball up court, a pass, Reed gets hand on the pass and hits the deck, steals ball, passes to AK who Doron Scheffers a pass up court to Mullins for the BOOM.

18 to 11.
