St. John's Post Game Thread

This makes a ton of sense for 2 reasons:
1) Ball is not competing with Braylon for open shots - different lines
2) Ball looks like he is capable of breaking the press and bringing the ball up the court when Malachi is pressured. Silas doesn't need such help but maybe Smitty does.

ok a third reason is Stewie brings some size and athleticism to the starting lineup.

I gotta fetch it, but @zls44 sent me a link last night to a metric that essentially confirms what I was thinking....we're really, really efficient when Stewie is in the lineup with one of those two, particularly Braylon. The AK, SD, TR, Braylon and Stewie rotation is the most efficient in the entire country.

Great recap. What is Rees doing with the small gesture. You fired up Zuby. Not sure that was too smart
I don't think the gesture was directed at Zuby. I like seeing Reed show some competitive fire. Zuby outplayed him down the stretch but all in all it wasn't a bad game for Reed. I wish Reed had stayed aggressive and tried to get Zuby in foul trouble. That would have helped down the stretch. Unfortunately it was the other way around.

We didn’t full court press them…
Fair point. But if UConn made them pay for their pressing, they would have stopped. Our inability to do that is a problem. Did you see Pitino's comments in the Dom Amore article about the cumulative affect of the press? Only 2 turnovers resulted but it affected rebounding and passing late in the game (and free throws). Do you think Demary misses those free throws late if he was able to play less than 36 minutes?

Really feeling like you guys are onto something here. I don't study it like you guys do, but it sure makes sense. Think Malachi if handled right

Yeah, other than getting in foul trouble I actually think he defended Zuby really well. Zuby might be shorter but he's built like a freight train. Reed had 3 blocks and I think at least 2 of them were against Zuby. Maybe all 3.

I said this in another thread, but I like that he had some swagger, shows there’s a fire in the tank that I didn’t expect.

St Johns just took 41 free throws to 17 for Xavier. It’s going to be impossible for anyone to beat them if they continually get protected by the refs like this.
Why do they protect them? I just don’t understand that.

Even the ST J’s fans admit it:

They'll get their wake up call in the tourney when they play non-conf teams again, sucks for the teams in conference that have to deal with this now though

It's almost like it's their style of play...

Are you people conspiracy theorists or just ignorant about basketball? (Impossible to beat them) they have 5 losses you idiot.

In conference. I made that pretty clear. Their own fans were claiming the refs were protecting them tonight but go on. Reading comprehension is tough for some I see.

Demary used a lot of energy getting inbounds.

I give Silas credit in his Butler pre-game media availability interview for "manning up" and taking responsibility for his St J game performance. Man in the mirror-Be accountable and learn from your mistakes. Tough kid and one of our leaders. Lessons learned.

It’s efficient because Stewart does the little things and makes extra passes. We can hide his defensive woes. Ball tends to look to shoot too much and doesn’t play defense. Having two inept defenders or more (Ross, Smith, Reibe, Ball, or Stew) on the court at the same time spells trouble.

We also wouldn't even been close if not for Silas play before the end. He was exhausted mentally and physically. It would be nice if we had a reliable backup to give him some rest. Presently we don't.

The turnover near the end of the game Silas grabbed the ball after the St Johns make and when he looked to inbound none of our players ran to him. It was like the team had a brainfart. He had almost no option to inbound to.
This is something that happens fairly often with the Huskies. We re not ready to inbound the ball at the start of the five seconds.

On drives near the hoop St Johns bumps are OK and other teams get called for fouls. It was obvious last night vs Xavier. Automatic whistle late in the game when St Johns drove the ball. Xavier also had no issues inbounding which we are now known for until Hurley and the rest of the highly paid coaches on the bench fix.

That link was making the rounds here earlier, and it was not adjusted for quality of opponent and was based on a mere 30 minutes of time on the floor all season. That said, it's not hard to see that Solo and Braylon are not complimenting each other like they should, and Ball's shooting struggles magnify the issue. Their time on the floor together needs to be limited.

Next time we meet, Dan will need to play multiple ball handlers together (even at the expense of defense) to slow down SJU's perimeter assault. Also, Stewart and Ross need to elevate their games. They are athletic enough to stem the tide against a team like SJU.
Are they? St. John's is a bad match-up for us. They have three guys between 6'7" and 6'9", all high level athletes, all skilled, all equipped w/ mid range ability and all good rebounders. Stew & Ross are what we have relative to athleticiam, but not sure whether we have the physicality against a St. John's or an Arkansas or Auburn.
