St. John's Post Game Thread

I also think
Duke would beat the brakes off those boys, I'm not buying the Big East at all this year
If you defend well, you have a chance. I don't see them making the Final Four, but Elite 8 is a very real possibility.

Nowell looked like a piece today. Still made some mistakes but the mistakes were the same every freshman makes. Unfortunately due to injury he never had the chance to make those and learn earlier in the season. If he continues playing like this he is serviceable as the backup PG. Might be too late in the season though.

That is 16 players for 15 Positions. I'm sure we will see a lot more movement in the roster than you think unless you think that outside looking in means thy might not be on our roster. Kind of silly since Furphy will get some minutes next year.
Yeah, Outside looking In Doesn’t necessarily mean on the team. Can’t predict that about Furphy. Nowell was a borderline 5* and has barely cracked the rotation and Furphy is barely inside the top 100?

It's not hard to beat UConn when the other team can consistently go in for layups. Hurley should've mixed up his defense, played some zone, to keep it close.

Hurley was throughly outcoached today.
.??
SJU made more 3s than 2 point baskets in the first half

This game was reflection of this whole Jekyll and Hyde season - would be a lot easier on me if they just sucked instead of us getting 34mins of terrible play mixed with 6 of good. I still think anything is possible though!

It's been an hour and I still can't believe our leader and potential All American candidate pulled up from 35 feet for a heat check with 25 seconds on the shot clock
Right after fumbling the ball away underneath the basket, when they could have cut it to 7

Furphy has an NBA body while Nowell is undesized. I wouldn't go by ratings as many haven't see Furphy play. He isn't that athletic but is on of those foreign players who can create offense and shoot.

Just like Bama was gonna beat the brakes off SDSU in 2023 right.

How is our collective looking? Do we have the nil to get 4 impact transfers?
Hurley could have gotten anyone he wanted from the portal last year but didn’t because I think he wanted to give the returning players a chance to showcase themselves. Unfortunately that didn’t pan out. None of them other than maybe Solo have shown any improvement. I think we will see several portal players for next year to go a long with the frosh.

You got my post saying that? You seem to be in a battle for the #1 spot in arguing strawmen

Unfounded 3-peat talk
Championship hangover
Not enough improvement from our sophomores
AK's game essentially being at the same level (if not worse, due to increased focus by opposing teams)
Portal additions being disappointing

Rank them in whatever order you want and you have our situation.

Our past two championship seasons have really amplified expectations, this season has been a reset.

You got my post saying that?
No but remember no way was SDSU gonna beat Brandon Miller and Bama that was the consensus. Sain’t John’s is an older team with a HOF coach how do they not have a chance. Just not buying this notion that SJ is an early out, SDSU was a physical team.

He’s welcome to compete for backup mins on the wing with Mullins. But we need to bring in a couple sure thing transfers for next year. We relied on a lot of question marks this year.

Hurley screwed up royally with roster construction. He thought a slight kid from St. Mary's who can't play point guard was going to be our starting point guard. He thought a spot up shooter (AK) was going to be our do everything leader. He thought Ross would show he's an NBA player. He never addressed not having guys who can take people off the dribble. He started the wrong center all season. We don't have the ballhandlers/creators and the team is physically weak outside of Reed.

I'm excited about our recruiting class but I'm not seeing the strength/athleticism in them. Braylon has the athleticism and quick twitch but he's pretty slight. Question marks with the other guys.

Coach needs to stop doing interviews/writing books and needs to figure this out. We were physically manhandled and Pitino ate his lunch. Pitino is just getting started there despite his age.

St. John's has an identity and they never go away from it. You can hang with them if they shoot terribly but this was a physical mismatch. We are a team with no identity this season.

Props to Pitino and St. John's, they're really friggin' good and a fun team to watch.
Well said John. Being real. Pitino has done a heck of a job with St. John's. AND you are right. Johnnies are frigging good.. Everybody on the team shoots threes.

That felt like 8 seconds on the table of an Italian restaurant. Brutal stuff, but they’re obviously much better as everyone has said.

I really thought this team would be good or minimally get much better by March. That’s why I’m posting on an internet forum for free.

Complete annihilation. St John’s just dominated UConn, and if I’m being honest, it didn’t really look too difficult other than that 3-4 minute 2nd half stretch. Grown men against boys

18-9 (10-6) with 4 games to go. The margin for error is now gone
20-21 wins probably gets us in.

It’s really not an overreaction at all. This team has been a complete mess since Maui and this “great” coaching staff has done nothing to fix it. Same mistakes being made 27 games into the season. Same offensive sets that aren’t working, same MTM defense that gets constantly shredded, same lack of fire or willingness to get on the ground and get yourself dirty. We get like 10% of 50/50 balls. That tells you everything you need to know.

There is zero accountability. That’s on the coaches, no one else.
If memory serves, didn't we win 9 in a row after Maui and almost crack top 10 til McNeeley's injury?

Why is Stewart so timid on offense in the last couple games? Zero shots today. He has to be more aggressive on offense.
Good question. I clearly remember games ago where he started of banging three's from the corner. AT THE START. Three in a row. A couple of times.

We should win out from here or at worst go 3-1. I wasn't expecting a W today - but that was ugly. I'd be shocked if we don't make the tournament. ESPN still has us at 96% - using their BPI to predict the rest of our games. They have us going 4-0, but I can't believe losing to Marquette would make much of a difference.

Once we get in? I'm not terribly optimistic. And I doubt we get to Saturday night at MSG for the BET either. But you never know.
