St John’s loses to Columbia by 48 ?

Any theories? Point shaving? Drugs? Bored with the tedium of ending the season? Friends of the team dared them? Trying to embarrass their terrible parents? A comet? Ideas?

Wrong. Do a search and literally every single answer comes back to football. Not sure what you think DOES have to do with an invite.

"UConn hasn't been invited to a P4 conference primarily due to its struggling football program, which lacks the consistent success, high revenue, and viewership that major conferences prioritize over elite basketball success. While the Huskies have a top-tier basketball brand and good academics, their poor football ranking, low booster revenue, and lack of a strong conference television market make them a less attractive expansion target compared to other institutions.

Here is a breakdown of why UConn remains an independent:
  • Football Performance: The driving force behind conference realignment is football strength, and UConn's program has struggled significantly, making it less attractive to the ACC or Big Ten.
  • Low Revenue & Attendance: Despite successes in basketball, UConn falls short in booster revenue and has limited stadium capacity, ranking last among potential ACC expansion peers, according to Reddit.
  • Failed Big 12 Pursuit: The Big 12 was interested in adding UConn specifically for basketball, but talks stalled in 2024 because the football program did not meet their standards, as discussed on YouTube.
  • Declined Pac-12 Offer: In October 2024, UConn declined a football-only offer from the Pac-12, prioritizing their basketball home in the Big East over the travel costs and logistical issues of a coast-to-coast conference, as reported in this YouTube video.
  • Geographic Challenges: As an independent, UConn has struggled to secure a permanent home that keeps their elite basketball program in a power conference while hosting football at the same time."

Was there some sort of mutiny on the St. John's team? That's score is hard to believe if they were playing straight up....

I watched two other play in games. Both wretched to watch. Tell me how the play in games are good for the sport???
True, but the same can be said for the other games as well. Yesterday the "chalk" held perfect. If it's perfect again today you could make the argument that an NCAA field of 32 is all that is needed. If your reaction to that is OMG that's a terrible idea, then don't put down the play-in games either.

The worthiness of our football program has nothing to do with the lack of an invite.
Well, I think it does but to a minor extent. There are several other more important dynamics involved. The bottom line could be boiled down to: if you bring in more $$ than what you take out, then you're in.

That's fair. If we were winning national championships in football, no doubt we'd be more attractive. Honestly, the finance thing is misleading. If you gave us an extra $50 million a year, and that's what it would be even in the big 12 or the ACC with even a 35 million media distribution + a 15 million CFP distribution, we'd be in the top third, maybe even top quarter, of college athletic department revenue.

So, we need to get into a P4 conference to make more money, but we can't make more money until we get into a P4 conference. That's the trap we're in.

Two St. Johns seniors who started against UConn in the last regular season game on 3/1 didn't play at all against Columbia. Those players lead the team in points (Donald) and assists (Wagner) in the Johnies BE 63-61 loss in the BE tournament to Seton Hall. I don't know why the two seniors didn't play, but clearly this wasn't the same roster which got them into the WBIT.

Thanks for this insight.... it explains a lot.... and, of course, leaves somethings,
well... Unexplained. Condolences to Head Coach Joe T!!

Classic catch-22.

OK I bow to your knowledge on this subject. It’s not because of football. Somebody doesn’t like us- BC, Syr, Louisville. We MUST get into a power conference. We’re in the age of 20 team conferences.
How does UConn go about it?

Unfortunately Villanova lost in the end to Texas Tech. The Cats were leading most of the game. Not a great game for Boscoe. I was pulling for them but they lacked leadership in the 4th quarter on the court.

So if you pay more attention, you will realize it's A little more complicated "somebody doesn't like us". The factors that make a team, a successful candidate have been different in every iteration of conference alignment. I don't have a magic bullet that would get us into any particular conference. What we need to do is continue to be as successful as we can on the court and on the field, but also financially and academically, including research. Even if we do that, there may not be another seat on the life boats. My best guess as for when something will happen is in between 2030 to 2036 because at that point in time, the ACC's exit fees drop to a more manageable 75 million. In 2036 its grant of rights lapses. In all likelihood, we may be a replacement for teams that exit the ACC. It won't be quite as strong a conference as it is now, but it will be financially more successful than the current big east.

Karma for that last second shot.

"Who owns New York?"

"C-O-L-U-M-B-I-A"

Especially since NYU's 91-game winning streak was snapped in the DIII Final Four two days ago.

Not a good representation for Big East basketball!!!!! Or, for basketball in general.
UCLA 96 - Iowa 45

Both teams still alive in NCAA tournament and even seeded top 8.

Stuff happens, St Johns missing some players, came out flat. Columbia highly motivated at home. Life at St Johns will go on.
