I'm amazed that the mention of almost any obscure locale from the Jewel Ave. park in Queens to Elon University (which I must admit to having never heard of) brings forth a 'yarder with personal experience of that place

One game doesn't make a coach.... but one stupid vote makes me believe she doesn't know much about WBB.

Did you see the game?

The kids were well spaced
had ideas, executed them
ran neat pick and rolls
were getting open all night
They didn't learn that on the schoolyards or in AAU
They also were assured and composed
I can confidently say on the basis of one game
That this lady knows how to coach

The game is on replay at ESPN
Worth watching, I recommend it
It's not often that such talent is so clearly demonstrated

Who lives on Jewel Avenue? My grandmother lived just off there in Forest Hills.

I enjoyed it. The arena was smallish, but nice and I had good seats. Unfortunately, my friend couldn't make it from Jersey, but I had fun, anyway. I should have skipped the casino, though, lol. I just got back home.

I lived a block away from Jewel Avenue and Main Street, in Flushing. Jewel Avenue in Forest Hills was a 5 minute drive.
I went to Queens College where I saw my first WBB game in 1973 when the AIAW Tournament was held there.
Queens lost in the finals to Immaculta.

I was at that game also: drove down from New Haven to see it.

I didn't watch them much last year up until after they played us. This year I've watched them several times already. I don't know that they are any better than last year but they aren't worse either. It is pretty much the exact same team. They got most of their production from their bench and now that bench starts. For whatever reason I think people assumed that would make some sort of a difference.
 
I think the assumption, by some, that they would be better has to do with the belief that Coates and Wilson were two of SC's best players - although they didn't start. Plus White would be healthy and Cuevas would be better. And they only lost Welsh, while replacing her with Imovbioh. My sense is that they seem to play to the level of the competition and still need work on their offense.

in a different thread I mentioned playing in Jewel Ave Park as a teen and someone (forgot who) said...I played there too
Lived around the corner on 178th near Union Tpke
And I went to Queens; wasn't around for the Tourney you mentioned, but did hear Horowitz play there as a warm-up for end of long retirement Carnegie Concert.
Amazing how many confluences there are

Elon didn't give Smith much to work with in the beginning. The 2002-2003 season was Elon's first year as a Division I school, a member of the Southern Conference. In May 2014, Elon moved up to the CAA. When the decision to move up in conferences was made, lots of new coaches were hired and the Athletic Department was revamped to support the teams. Smith is, essentially, building a new team. Recruiting kids to a Southern Conference school has to be tough; hopefully being in the CAA will help. Smith and her fellow coaches also needed Elon University itself to be a draw to scholar-athletes and the school worked hard to gain a good academic reputation. I've been very impressed with Elon for many reasons.

Couple small factoids - the Elon men's soccer team was ranked in the top ten this year. The men's basketball team played against Syracuse the way the women played SC - scared the pants off them, too. On the 28th, the men play Duke and the women play WVU.

When i was growing up, Elon went by Elon College and was a NAIA school known as the Fighting Christians. Actually they moved up to Division I in the late 90s... and they were in the Big South conference for a few years before joining the Southern Conference. Alot has been made about the effects of Conference Expansion among the Big Leagues... but it had a huge affect on the smaller leagues as well. I loved the old Southern Conference with Elon, Davidson, App State, the C of C..... but all of those schools left for bigger leagues. While I hated to see Elon leave the Southern Conference.. I understand why they did it. They should be ok in all sports... with the exception of football. The CAA is BRUTALLY TOUGH in football :eek:

Surprisingly... even though Elon is about a 25 minute drive from me.... the only time Ive ever been to their campus was in elementary/middle school for a science fair competition (or something like that) I hear its a great campus and that they have a really nice football stadium.... Im planning on going to see the Phoenix women in person when they play the C of C later this month. Charleston's coach is a former Duke assistant, so I'll be pulling for the Cougars in that one. :cool:

One side note... the Phoenix did beat an ACC school.... NC State.. earlier in the season. One of their leading scorers in that game was Maddie McCallie.... her mother coaches at Duke.

My bad with the dates.

Regarding football - I saw the Phoenix play #20 New Hampshire at New Hampshire and they were getting killed at half time 34-7. The coach made adjustments and held the Wildcats to 3 second half points. Scoring against the NH defense was tough, though, and Elon fell 37-14. However, I was impressed with Elon's toughness and energy especially since the offensive line is comprised of mostly true freshmen and sophomores. The team did improve during the season but the CAA had 4 ranked teams and, well, Elon isn't that far along yet. The coach, Rich Skrosky, just finished his second season and seems like a keeper.

First Women's B-Ball Coach at Elon . . . Beloved NC native KAY YOW, coached four years there (71-75), before leaving to launch her iconic program at NC State.
 
The thread title asks a question. The answer is, no.
