South Carolina Postgame Thread

You’re making a bunch of assumptions. All I can tell you is that there is an actual video of Dawn shaking every UConn coach’s hand, including Geno’s while also hugging him.
Please post that video.

You’re making a bunch of assumptions. All I can tell you is that there is an actual video of Dawn shaking every UConn coach’s hand, including Geno’s while also hugging him.
My point is from the video he believed Dawn didn’t behave well in his eyes and he felt disrespected. The question is someone like Geno who is a very smart and knows how to read people wouldn’t get THIS upset i there’s something minor in his eyes or that according to you he doesn’t know what he’s talking about or had a memory lapse. Take a step back, my wife who’s in law always tells me take a step back and try to understand the what would make someone react this way. If Dawn shook his hand and hugged him do you really think that’s all to it for him to go bonkers. Come on Old Dude out of all people I would’ve thought you’d see that there’s more to this.

In the post game press conference, Geno said that he feels that the standards aren't equal. In other words, she gets away with it, but he would get a T for the same behavior.
Did he get a T tonight? Was that her fault, either way? Grow up, shake her hand and congratulate her, and regroup for next year.

I think whatever Geno said to Dawn needed to be said. Probably overdue. One can debate the timing but Geno speaks his mind in the moment.

The team's stars didn't play well. That's a recipe for losing.
Agreed. But I thought it was more than you did not double shake my hand. Clearly she shook his hand once. I am a Geno disciple

.-.
This is exactly right. I love Geno but his coaching and behavior tonight was totally unacceptable. Grow up, take the L, and recruit to win next year.
Anyone who defends that postgame behavior, no matter the justification, is not being rational. Most people in the coaching profession, at any level, know you gain respect in ounces and lose it in pounds. Tonight was a perfect example of just that. JMO

The team had a great season. Tonight they had it handed to them by a good SC team. That doesn't take away from what they were able to do this year. Geno embarrassed himself. Maybe he was trying to take the negativity of the result on him rather than the players (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt) but that wasn't the way to do it.

On to next season.
Perhaps. But he left his players in time of need

So, anyways, regarding the game - I don’t blame any of the players for the loss. I see people that wanted more from the upperclassmen, which is understandable, but I’m totally giving Blanca a pass on this one. She’s a freshman in her first Final Four and she was trying hard to defend and score but may have been overwhelmed by the moment.

I am so glad she’s a Husky and look forward to watching her game grow
I give pretty much every player a pass except Azzi. But it’s more like I’m just disappointed that she didn’t seem to be able to meet the moment. I’m not saying it was all on her, of course, but as the star senior I feel like the team emotionally depended on her to be her FF self from last year and that didn’t pan out. It’s a shame because it felt like she peaked at the wrong time. I really wanted her to go out on a win and set records. Sigh.

I can’t wait for the next post stating Geno is out of touch and too old to coach women’s basketball and should resign. Let’s give Geno some grace and not forget all the wonderful things he’s done over the course of his career for women’s basketball, and for all those that wish to continue to bash him, shame on you all. Just shame !

The Woody Hayes comparisons are a bit extreme. Woody punched an opposing player. Geno got into a shouting match with an opposing coach. Not the greatest look, as they say, but it's hardly something that is going to be remembered 10 years from now when people are talking about Geno's career. I found it more fascinating and vaguely thrilling than an indictment of his character.
Sorry if it sounded like I was indicting his character. I actually was intimating something physically. But I will leave it at that. And after all the praise Staley has heaped praise on him over the years publicly…. if there was some mixup prior to the game about some three minutes. and he considers he was disrespected and acts like that, then maybe it’s not the other person. He’s not God, and nobody did anything to him. I think if you take off any HomeTeam colored glasses, you will see that. There was no excuse for his actions including his fourth-quarter rant on TV. Not a good look and I would say the same thing if it was our coach.

And for coaches riding the officials, Geno, your men’s coach, and about every other coach in college rides the officials. So anyone who thinks Geno was upset because Staley yells at officials…. That means we’ve all gone to bizarro world

They don't compare. Agreed. But that was my thought. After such a great career the retirement age Woody did the unimaginable. I don't think Geno has ever acted like he did tonight on national tv. Would the younger Geno have said and done what he said and did tonight? Did he not remember that Dawn shook his hand at the start?

As a freshman it was not on Blanca who has never faced an opponent of this caliber. She was meant to be a bonus in these kinds of cases.

LOL. People here know your schtick. You've been singing from the "I hate Geno" prayerbook for years. As sure as night follows day, you'll be here preaching after a loss. You're never heard from after a big win. Funny how that works.
Not true-I don't like him after wins, either. On the other hand, I've always loved the players.

I guess he is referring to some unwritten tradition where the two coaches meet at the scorers table to shake hands and I guess be announced. It seems petty to have this type of reaction.

????

Dawn shook is freakin hand and hugged him. What else did he need her to do?

There was footage shown of Geno and Dawn exchanging handshakes pre-game.

There was not any footage shown of Geno waiting for 3 (or however many) minutes, waiting for Dawn (as he said in his post-game conference). Does this footage exist? If so, I hope someone posts it, either here or on social media. Geno is many things, but he's not a liar. Is Dawn a liar? - Ms. "I'm all about integrity"? You be the judge.

That being said, looks like an overreaction on both parties.

And as I said in the chat, we got outplayed tonight by a team that was taller, more athletic, and had revenge in mind for their loss to us last year. Our not making shots, of course, was a massive problem, as was the called fouls discrepancy. Love you, Huskies, and see you next year.

Just a side note. UConn and SC put up a total of 50 1st half points in one of the ugliest shooting games you will ever see. At the end of the 1st half of the 2nd game between UCLA & TX, both teams have combined for 37 pts…… 😣
Yes not exactly a great showcase of the women’s game.

Geno owes no one anything, least of all Staley, or the press, or us, or the players (who undoubtedly agree with him) or anybody else, and the game, with NIL and the portal and the trend toward 'Physicality" is changing in a way that is not particularly appealing.
Obviously still watching... for now. If I want the WWE that is on another channel.

Sounds like he was expecting an additional handshake.

I guess I’m out of touch of how many handshakes coaches are supposed to have before a game. We know there was at least one. I guess there is supposed to be two

Why is it rhetorical? You’re listing names. Fire
Away, beefcake.
The remark "do you want a list?" was a rhetorical question because I am not going to get banned from the Boneyard over providing said list of publicly available information.

Well according to him. Be on time. If Geno can be there on time shouldn’t Dawn? I know to you this is subtle and minor. But to him it seemed like disrespect and obviously he felt she did it on purpose, it wasn’t like she was in the bathroom and came back and apologized. She knew what she was doing and probably didn’t take the time to apologize or say hey i didn’t hear the announcement. So let’s not kid our selves. Geno wouldn’t make a big deal out of nothing in my mind when it comes to people. He’s one of the most perceptive people I’ve seen.
This can’t be a real post.

IMHO, Geno doesn't have to apologize to Dawn if he doesn't want to, but he might consider saying something to the SC players. Regardless of the kind of game they played (and yes, there was some serious mugging going on) they had game plan and stuck to it, with great results. There is absolutely no question which was the better team tonight.

If Geno had a plan for how to play against the SC bigs, the players didn't execute it at all. UConn could not adjust to what SC was doing and the UConn shooting was just awful. In addition to the three pointers missed, how many missed gimmes? Ten, maybe? Kayleigh's was just one. Blanca had a couple, Sarah had at least one as did Ashlynn (who otherwise played her heart out) and Serah had one or two. Lots of pointless running around followed by standing still. and no one with a way to get Azzi loose enough to shoot effectively. As someone posted earlier, they played like a team that believed what the media had been gushing about them all this time, not a team that was hungry for a win.
