Sources say University of Virginia provost Thomas C. Katsouleas is finalist for UConn president

I would love to see UConn in B10 and in AAU, but that may be bit of stretch.
I still think we have better chance at ACC, and even that may be reaching for the clouds.

Hey, less than 880 yards ... er, excuse me, 800 meters ... from the Rent sits one of the world's premier aerospace installations. Why shouldn't UConn have a prolific physicist president? Especially one with another completely different side to his persona?

Haha, I was taking a thermodynamics course from the physics department one time in my UConn graduate career. As an engineer. For a cross cultural experience. And I had been warned. The culture shock was pretty significant when I used the wrong units one time. I got a short lecture on my paper when it was returned. "Physics has not used [those units] now for almost a century." And they were not even EE units (which I knew very well not to use). ;)

There was one vote....and it is was unanimous. The straw votes, if any, are never made public and who voted how is internet conjecture.

The conference usually has one official vote...and it is a unanimous one
Actually, I believe that Cuse was only a prospective member at the time. They were not in favor of our joining but they did not have a vote.

Back to the more important issue, Katsouleas seem to be a good choice. I like the idea (obvious in retrospect) of utilizing existing resources and expertise to create specialty areas that would be marketable and productive.

I met Katsouleas briefly a few years ago.

It's not, we have to straighten things out and market what we have here. If we screw this up, epic failure. I mean the B1G.

We're a shoo-in for the ACC or Big 12.

.-.
I don't believe that UConn ever came up for an ACC vote.

I am sure that there was discussion and Coach K liked UConn....but once Swofford put forward that football was driving force that would allow upgraded media contracts and the perceived weak point of the conference...all else became a moot point.

Yes...BC liked not having local competition...but I also believe it was ESPN's media estimates and advice, along with the ACC football schools agreeing, that knocked UConn out of the running.

There are just dozens of news articles about it, but I guess we'll trust your rumors more because you're an insider.

Is he hired already? Because it is shocking that someone's name is out there who has not been already hired. This stuff is supposed to be super secretive for obvious reasons. If word gets out that people talk at your school, you will only attract the worst candidates and biggest losers.

Before he has the job? What purpose does that serve? OK, as long as you like wasting tons of money on ineffectual people. Because that's what you're advocating here.

He met with CT governor once or twice. At some point names will get out there.

With this guy it appears everyone knows he is leaving UVA and it is a bit different.

I agree with your broader point that initial screening of names should be confidential.

yeah god forbid the public should have any insight into the process by which we hire someone who runs one of the states biggest assets

its more important we protect their identity so they dont have to deal with the fact they didnt get hired.

oh no would we not get the good administrators if our process was more transparent. typical threat from those that want to waste our money

youll tell me how great herbst is im sure. when all she did was spend money and pay cronies and leave us off much worse than we started.

No decent candidate would ever apply to UConn again. You'll get the worst candidates imaginable.

yes we heard you. the administrators who enjoy bloated salaries provided by taxpayers refuse any scrutiny at all.

we dont deserve any insight into who is hired we just shovel money into their bottomless pit to enrich their cronies.

we might get worse admins than the ones who dont even know their 6 figure medical professors have been collecting a salary while being dead for a year? wow they must really be bad.

you can stop threatening me with we’ll get bad applicants. the last thing i’d want is applicants you think are good.

link some of those dozens...any that are from a real source and not a rehash of internet conjecture...I'd like to see them...

All that I did was to take the time to find what was said...by AD's and by Swofford that was in print...

You don't likeit? Stop being lazy and link your stuff.

Based on the linked article and other media reports, not surprisingly Katsouleas has been searching for new opportunities since the Wahoos' president who hired announced plans to depart. For example:

"Katsouleas was one of three publicly identified finalists for president of the University of Utah, a school with a search process that is more public than UConn’s. The university’s search committee worked in confidence and did not identify either of the two finalists interviewed by Lamont the weekend after taking office on Jan. 9."

As for UConn, the BoT may very well have conducted a very tight search. On the other hand, an undefined number of business leaders minimally met with Katsouleas and possibly the other finalist. Finally, add on 2 separate meetings with Lamont and all bets are off on keeping things hush-hush.

If they were scrutinized by you, they'd be sure to get the worst candidates.

Luckily, they have hiring committees to do the job, in a confidential way, so that people won't risk their Provostial positions when they apply elsewhere. But hey you can go on making no sense because you like to complain to no one!

Plus, he already announced he was stepping down from his UVA position at end of year.

Every quote that I posted was from a decision maker who was there at the ACC expansion committee meeting and ACC meeting where the vote was taken...not guess work, not some journalist's opinion...

Go ahead and link your article...let's see which members of the ACC Expansion Committee it quotes.

Don't need to. Article has been posted here 1,000 times and everyone here has read it. It was in the Boston Globe then the Washington Post. ADs were quoted--one AD had to write an open letter apology to the entire ACC for revealing the information. Even ESPN was livid about it. It's so well known. This was the 2011 decision. The 2013 decision? There was an article on that too explaining, one, that Duke and UNC were genuinely peeved that one school didn't "want the competition" and, two, the AD of Louisville explained that proceedings had moved so rapidly that UConn was "inked" in as a member of the ACC.

lol hiring committees. another way to waste money and for no one to ever be held responsible for anything.

i hope they hired a recruiting firm too - then you can’t even blame the hiring committee
