Some thoughts on last Nite

The freshmen will be just fine.Once they realize they should just play thier game and not wait for thier time. They will have breakout games and become the players that they really are.Stewies first year was up and down until the post season (7 minutes against Baylor) when she played like an upperclassmen.Hopefully NB makes her debut and gives them the physical presence they need.Saniya played a really good game and hit a big shot but I really liked the way she played defense! If she stays confident she is a big asset to the team.

I also am still bugged that Aja has her own custom uniform. I've looked at it closely and don't try to tell me it looks different because she rolls up the shorts and rolls her sleeves under. She got SC to make her a custom uniform different from the rest of the team. I'm not sure if she's a diva or not, but you'd never ever see that at UCONN.
Every time I see her, I think of CD and how she'd never let that happen at UConn.

UCONN women against MD certainly didn't win pretty: they threw the ball away Repeatedly, got beat down the court Repeatedly, missed easy shots, and were generally manhandled.
Helping out near basket opens up OPEN three pointers and MD made some.

GENO has some work to do !
All teams will SCRUTINIZE this MD replay tape. Refs want close games due to advertisers $$$$. Talent is growing in Women's basketball as audience increases.
Kiah Stokes was VERY Athletic and strong, UCONN needs a BIG center, Badly, as MD made CLEAR Mon. Night !

However give MD credit they played well. They cut off the baseline, and over all played well especially near basket. MD vs ND will be a Great Game. Another thing MD did was play very physical. Thus the foul calls and some NO calls.

For UConn. Some rust, played way to fast at times thus the turnovers most of which were unforced. That was a huge problem in the first two quarters. Slowing it down and maintaining poise would've been better. The refs let a lot go underneath. Too many times Stewie was pushed off her feet. Twice her posting up and just lambasted off her feet and no call... except for the fans reaction. A couple of times UConn went to the basket Gabby Collier, Morgan and Moriah Jefferson in particular and were banged missing easy shots and NO call. Then a touch call from a guard. UConn adjusted and won in the second half with very few turnovers.

Katie Lou Collier and Chong all showed signs of breaking out. Chong especially. Chong looked like she did in high school. Very encouraging could've been Saniyas breakout game. She was confident, made some great defensive plays when it counted. Gabby has developed and continues to get better. Now the wait for Butler. The question remains when will she play. Im hoping Wednesday against Cincinnati.

This game was a wakeup game for underclassman. Likely will see improvement over the next few games. They need to contribute more. They need to take charge and not defer to Mojeff Tuck and Stewie. They need to be confident to take charge of situations. Saw some of that which is encouraging.

I agree with you but those kids want to stay in Texas and they don't mind sitting. Remember you can only play 5 so those sitting do no good to anybody. Lets see what happens when Cox shows up. Lets see who likes sitting. One player doesn't make a team great anymore. You need 5 good starters and a couple of good players off the bench. Some teams have a lot of bigs and have to give them time of lose them. Im patient enough to see how this plays out. MD has a lot of bigs and they all get in foul trouble. Thus all get time and really a lot of their minutes hurt the team because they foul to much. That imo is because they don't understand how to play defense without fouling. If you have Cox you don't need 2 other post players provided she knows how to play defense and avoid foul trouble.

Agree with you...this particular crop of Texas bigs (Cox, Joyner) wanted to stay in Texas..all power to them. Everyone has different ways of addressing their roster -- Maryland has a 7 (!) person recruiting class coming in and Kentucky tends to take lots of kids, too. At this juncture, UConn and Notre Dame are pretty selective about whom they go after: Muffett McGraw has all but said they recruit by positional need and she wants 12 kids on the team. Of course, both teams would've loved Cox to join them, but once that didn't happen, Muffett kept to the two-person class of Erin Boley and Jackie Young, a "a 6'2", stretch 4" and wing (with a bit of Loyd and McBride in her). So, true bigs will be focus in 2017.

At some point this season, they are really going to need Butler. Ms. Staley got her game plan last night.

Oh, You mean like in last year's 87-62 rout? Last year SC was all-in on the "dump it into the bigs" strategy- to Wilson, Coates, Welch and Ibiam. They were big last year; they are big this year. That didn't work so well. Can Staley realistically change her game plan? While Welch and Ibiam are gone, Wilson, Coates and White will likely continue the same failed game plan because SC had no outside 3-point game last year to spread the floor, nor does it this year, with the same backcourt trio of Mitchell, Sessions and Cuevas- very good guards, but not outside threats.

(And in last year's game Stokes did little, playing just 11 minutes as a defensive non factor with 3 rebounds and 1 block. So on defense, we have no less size this year than last, and it worked okay last year.)

Did you see the ease with which Brionna Jones scored? A mystery why the Terps did not go to her down low more. Stewie can't guard everyone with height. I saw on at least two occasions where Mo was guarding her. If the Huskies aren't playing their A game on offense, a team that has height and knows how to use it will be a problem.

I don't agree with this at all.. zero assists and 5 turnovers? And Stewie can guard anyone with height because she'll outplay anyone. They can't guard her either only Stewie can actually pass. Who do you think Jones stopped on the defensive end? After Tuck took three quick shots and missed to start the 2nd half her and Stewie were excellent efficient wise. They not only scored many were layups but the had a total of 6 assists and no turnovers. While Joes had 3 turnovers in the 2nd half. No assists for the game. If you are MD - do you really want to slow the game down that much and throw the ball in the paint to a potential black hole?

Do you recall ND with Ruth Reilly? From what I understand in her 1st three years vs UCONN - UCONN frustrated her. During that time when she was getting better and better but they frustrated her with double teams and sometimes didn't do doubles. Where were the doubles coming from? Anyhow it took her 3 years to figure it out. How often is Jones going to see that? You don';t think Geno is not going to do anything, do you? Do you really think the next time if Butler can't handle her a bit that Geno won't have some defense which would challenge Jones's ability to make the right pass? Jones is averaging just a little over one assist per game. Do you really think if UCONN were to throw some double teams and other times don't and have the doubles come from different areas that she would still dominate the game and outplay Stewie? Again -- what did Jones do defensively?

Passing is underrated. It's a fundamental of basketball. And so far Jones has done nothing defensively to impact the UCONN offense. Let's not treat her like Griner or the sr Ruth Reilly.

You are right on. We'll outrun them again.

If that's the case- I think it's illegal. It used to be many moons ago in my HS officiating days-

Its not the case. Just another absurd and unnecessary shot at A'ja Wilson. She rolls her shoulders and her shorts are a few sizes too small, a size meant for a player not 6'5". The smaller shorts look better in my opinion. Jatarie White wears big(ger) shorts.

(For Eric) Why would Dawn allow something likely illegal that could result in a negative situation for her best player? She wouldn't. Dawn is no Geno, but she's no dummy either. Continue underestimating her.

Isn't there a rule on this board about refraining from talking about player appearances (uniform fit included) or does that rule only apply to UCONN players? A'ja Wilson has plenty of game for you to dislike. Instead of letting the way she chooses to wear her uniform annoy you try being annoyed by that instead.

Honestly, I'm not sure if SC plays down to the competition, but from what I've seen from them and Maryland, Baylor and ND, they are the most underwhelming of the quartet (to my untrained eye). SC has moments of terrific offense and smothering defense, then it seems like the entire team takes a pause for several minutes and one wonders what the heck happened.

I also am still bugged that Aja has her own custom uniform. I've looked at it closely and don't try to tell me it looks different because she rolls up the shorts and rolls her sleeves under. Prove it. "I've looked at it closely..." are you a team equipment manager? If so, what's your name? I know all of them personally and I'm sure Dawn would be curious why you're spreading lies like this on the Internet. Rumors are born from petty comments like this. I'm pretty sure there's a NCAA rule being violated if that's the case and unlike you, I think Dawn is much smarter than that.

Diva? Considering how hard UCONN recruited A'ja I assumed Huskies fans would know her much better than that, but if you don't then I'll tell you.. Wilson is FAR from a diva. She's a team player and very much bought into what Staley is selling. In fact, Staley has to encourage A'ja (like Mitchell) to be more selfish because she's that gifted.

A'ja has plenty of game for us to talk about - in the future, I'd suggest you abstain from that nagging urge to talk about a player's appearance (including the way she wears her uniform) or demeanor (insinuating she's a diva), especially when you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm annoyed by this - dressing differently from her teammates. Just an attempt to draw attention to herself other than with her play. Typical "diva" behavior, so to me those comments are excused. Certainly no major deal to me in the big scheme of things, but IMO if she wants to intentionally attract attention with non-standard attire, then she (and her fans) should expect people would comment on it.

Yes, but they will be chasing the past just like a buying a dying tock or whacking the wrong prairie dog hole. We will have changed by then.

Bingo. LOL. Agree 100%. As for his her other comments... Spreading lies? Good lord, SC needs to get a grip - overly sensitive much?? It's been a long time since I've seen such a hissy fit thrown on the BY. Brava!!

If he had said something to the likes of "Oh I don't like the way A'ja wears her shorts or her jersey. She looks ridiculous" I would've shrugged it off because he has the right to not like it. Heck, I'm not crazy about the way several of our players flip their elastic bands.. but like you, in the grand scheme of things.. it's not that big of a deal to me.

Instead he tried to masquerade his opinion as fact. I called him out on it and he's unable to prove something he "looked at closely"... Regardless, his comment was nothing more than a nasty character shot.

This is the BY, you can talk bad about SC all day. Talk about our poor 3pt shooting, guards unable to drive, inability to score against the zone.. etc. Call us a terrible team and say all kinds of bad things about the team's basketball ability. That doesn't bother me. The childish character shots are beneath this message board.

I would expect UCONN fans to defend their players the same if a fan of another school (or a Huskies fan) took shots at a player beyond their game. (i.e. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis..)

Let me make sure I got this correct.. I'm overly sensitive and throwing a hissy fit because I called you out on something you tried to perpetrate as fact when it pertains to my team?

K.

Yes and no. I'm late getting to this thread and didn't anticipate how it would develop considering the OP.

First off, let's put an end to this particular squabble. It's testy and going nowhere good.

Second, we do have low tolerance for comments about a player's appearance -- any player -- provided it's about something over which the player has no control and/or is derogatory. Fat, ugly, more specific things about the face or body of that sort, aren't acceptable.

Third, comments like "diva" are out of bounds. I'm not going to go back and edit or delete posts in this thread, but cut it out and be on notice. Those are character attacks on players and as such are borderline at best.

Fourth, visitors may not be aware that other aspects of appearance -- things that can be controlled -- are part of the UConn culture and are discussed here from time to time as ultimately play-related. You'll see references to Chris Dailey exercising some influence on that.

Players intentionally trying to look different from their teammates are pushing the envelope in this culture. That's why no tattoos except covered up (Gabby and others); it's why no names on the jerseys; it's all part of a mentality inculcated in players that they are, first and foremost, a team and not a collection of individuals looking for personal attention.

'Nuff said I trust.

First of all- I didn't make the comment. When I read it, I was just adding that I believe there is a rule that prevents different uniforms. Someone noted that it looked different than the other uniforms. Not sure real malice was intended by the poster or not. I'm in Aiken this week, Columbia with my favorite cousins tomorrow. Enjoying the warm weather and all your rain!

The first paragraph was for you. Everything after (For Eric) was for EricSanDiego. I would've quoted him after answering you but I couldn't quote him because it can be cumbersome trying to double quote via mobile.
