Solo's Replacement - Paul McNeil

I should have trusted the 2022 version of myself when I opened this thread

14 turnovers for the entire year, while playing just shy of 1000 minutes. How is that possible? Or are ESPN stats just bunk?

We need a Malachi Smith and more size. Adding a shooter makes sense as well.

But we need multiple players.

We're one twisted ankle away from having to play 210-pound small forward Nik Khamenia at center and another twisted ankle away from having to bring a fan out of the stands to play point guard.
I’d like a lock down defense PG (like Ricky Moore). This guy would be great as BM backup if he’ll take it. If not someone like Joey C. The Washington dude would be great for center. And PF Stewart if he’d come back.

I think they're going offense with the last guard spot.

I really don't think the Washington kid is gonna work out for us - I love his story, but hate his injury history. I don't see how he holds up at a place that practices as hard as UConn does.

From Borges' article, it seems like Dan Hurley is comfortable with Junior County backing up Silas at point.

Good enough. (But actually play him, Dan Hurley.)
Did you think Danny was going to tell reporters that Junior County sucks and that all agents should be aware that UConn is desperate for a decent backup PG?

Good points. In Hurley we trust.

Why would he? The kid is good.
Danny is playing up his confidence in County as a backup PG ("it is a sure thing") in order to downplay his need for an actual PG so as to keep the price down a bit.

It is one thing to like County and let him earn his minutes and quite another to rely on County to be a key contributor and then look for a midseason trade when it blows up in his face.

We had August_West and others saying Ahmad Nowell would be an all-time Husky great before he got on the court here. I was really high on Jalen Gaffney.

It remains to be seen what he will do as a freshman. He might be very good and ready but he's not anywhere in the same ballpark of surefire recruits Castle, McNeeley, Mullins etc. Playing point guard at UConn is really difficult for anyone let alone a freshman and this is a really bad class nationally.

Intriguing SG 6'6" - In portal from Bama-Wisconsin native-Davion Hannah. Supposedly shut down this year by Oates and applied for a redshirt as a freshman. Reputation as a lock down defender with long wing span. Has Steph Castle size. Only reason I mention this guy is that I believe he would have a modest NIL ask based on his CBB resume with strong upside potential for future seasons. Has 4 years of eligibility. Rated in 37-42 range coming out of HS. #1 rated SG for Wisconsin in 2025.

What is Dan's priority at guard for the bench? Lights out shooter? CG with ball handling skills to help County? Malachi-like PG for change of pace? Best available athlete? Just throwing his name out there as available as a two way player that's athletic and probably affordable.

Not that the recruiting sites are all that accurate, but 247 lists him as a 2G and not even a CG. It's hard enough for freshman PGs or CGs handle the lead guard responsibilities on both ends of the floor or the defense pressure they will face, it's even tougher for 2Gs with experience to handle it.

Now it wouldn't be the first time a recruit has been listed incorrectly. And sometimes a recruit who is capable of playing one position ends up playing more time at a different one due to what his team needed, i.e. he's a capable lead guard that slid over to the 2 because they needed him there.

I'm still very concerned about relying on a freshman to log important minutes at the 1, and hope they can land an experienced guard that can hold their own if County struggles to give them solid minutes spelling Silas.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm certainly glad someone around here can read Danny's mind and know exactly what he is thinking.

That’s what’s so great about The Yard. We are stocked full of mentalists and Nostradamuses. Some of them even do the Vulcan Mind Meld with him.

Shooting guard and small forward: 80min.. Mullins 25 Landrew 25, Ross 10 McNeil 20
It's doable if you factor in foul trouble, injury, wonton women.
Ross will be unhappy with 10.
Mullins probably wants 30
Landrew may demand 30
No demands accepted
it's earned. Period.

Respectfully disagree…we need to replace Solo’s inefficient scoring,
Same broken record, different day. Amazing that after Ball announces his wrist is so bad that he's skipping an entire year to get fully healthy. And you're still here with this "sOLo'S iNeFFiCieNt sCoriNg" B S Give it a flippin' rest. The rest of your asinine opinion is irrelevant

Solo shot better after his injury.

Adding another wing is not a priority
A 1-4-5 is
You have two freshmen wings who duppose to be the real deal . behind a 30 minute guy you’re trying to move into the latterly and a 20+ minute senior
There are 10* minutes at the one available plus as many a 15 each st the 4-5
Unless he is a Newton type combo guard who can play some one and one of those wings can play the 4 you simply don’t have the minutes
Then how did we have the minutes when we expected Solo to play this year?

Two guards just announced transfers to UNC today. If they are actually after McNeil, that’s a good sign. Obviously Kentucky is always a threat too, but they also have Wilkins, so who knows?
Kentucky signed both Wilkins and Diallo.

I think we have the money we need to keep up with the top 10 to 15 teams in the country. In this NIL era we have to compete. This is Connecticut man, this is the main university in a wealthy state. This is the #1 sports draw in the state. Hurley puts his roster together differently than some others, we don't want a bunch of straight up mercenaries here, but we're still competing at the higher levels of compensation to get the players we want and need to stay on top.
100% agree. Michigan is reloading as is Duke and Kentucky is willing to throw crazy money out there if anyone is willing to sign.

Supposedly Michigan has an OV on Saturday with one of the top rated C for 2027 class. 5-star Obinna Ekesie Jr.

Is there anyone besides some random poster on the boneyard connecting McNeil to Uconn? All ive seen is UNC, UK and him returning to Nc State as his options and that hes asking big money. Till i hear something from someone credible i call bs.

McNeil comes here, lights it up from 3 and he is a first round pick as one and done for us.

Demary, Mullins, McNeil, NK, Hines - this works for me. Add some bench pieces and we play Michigan again in Detroit for #7

Landrew is a freshman. He can demand all he wants but we’ve never seen him play in our offense. Some folks here are also expecting no learning curve with the new additions. We don’t know what Hines, Khamania, County will bring to the table. We are speculating. At least with O’Neal we know he can shoot well, played in a decent conference and had great shooting percentages and ppg. If we’ve got the NIL money which we should have, we shouldn’t even be debating how much spa and so wants. Yes, we still need a PF, Center and veteran backup point guard. But if there’s a guy like O’Neal out there, I want him.
