Solo's Replacement - Paul McNeil | Page 6 | The Boneyard

Solo's Replacement - Paul McNeil

Two things can be true at the same time. Yes we need a backup point guard but we also need to replace Solo’s point production.
Respectfully disagree…we need to replace Solo’s inefficient scoring, that we now know was due to a wrist injury on his shooting hand that was bad enough for him to miss an entire season. We also need to improve defensively in that spot which is an area he struggled. We have one of the best shooters in the country in Mullins who will be better in his Sophomore year as was Solo, ….Mullins should also be ready to play Karaban like minutes if he is truly an NBA lottery level player next year…..Ross, Khamenia, Landrew are all very likely going to be more efficient scorers than injured Junior year Solo and are more capable defenders particularly Ross, so we have in effect replaced him already. We need a good reliable backup PG to replace Malachi and a preferably 7 foot rim protector with some stretch four face the basket scoring ability to play behind and at times next to Hines….That is how you win the Natty not clogging up the SG / wing position again.

Silas 100% healthy, all year.

Just build the roster as you want not based on worst case scenarios. Gotta have some GOOD luck with health. Poor shooting, refereeing and health issues were 3 strikes and your Runner Up this year. Can’t win National Championship without some decent luck(except in 23&24 🤣)

Yeah, I guess my response is that I'm not talking about worst case scenario--Silas out for year--but, rather, the type of absences that we could reasonably expect: games here and there missed to injury, and foul trouble. Say we really need a good backup PG for 5-7 games. Those could make a difference in terms of seeding, morale, etc.

Seems the staff is confident in County filling that role, so OK. If they're good with him, I guess I have to be. 🤷‍♂️

But here, it's not even worst case scenario.

Normal scenarios see us losing players for extended periods nearly every year.

We are not getting this dude, you people will believe anything.

We’ve spent a massive amount of our budget already on the starters. There isn’t any left for another expensive starter.

We have multiple backups to pay still. Even if County is the projected backup PG, you need a better emergency option than AM. You need a good backup center in a heavily inflated big man market. And we probably want a solid big bodied wing to backup Khamenia at the 4.

Our 5 star SF is getting a chance to start in a competition with our returning senior. Landrew has Castle type potential, people just forgot about him because he committed before the season. He’s 6’6 230, strong, athletic, a dog, and he gets downhill in the half court. If he’s a year away, Ross has an incredibly high floor as an elite 3nD wing, he was better than Solo last season, and was key in us making the national title game. He might have a jump coming on the ball anyways.

What's our budget and how much have we spent?

Not being a wise guy. Do you feel we have had really bad health luck? I’m not willing to do the statistical comparisons, but I lean towards we are slightly in the unlucky side of the curve, but not terrible.

I definitely wouldn't say no if Mr. McNeil came knocking on the door. At 6'5 he has some length and shooting, rebounding and foul shooting which seem to be his strengths. I hope coach can bring him into the fold to soften the loss of Solo.

What's our budget and how much have we spent?
Thank you. This question gets asked regularly of folks who speak authoritatively about what we have and what we have spent.

Dan-“ Dave I think I can sign his kid McNeil from NC State,. If you get me an extra 300 K. Think he might put us over the top for #7. What do you think?”

Dave-“Think we can get close, let me make a few calls, is day after tomorrow too late?”

Dan-“Tomorrow better,,might be gone day after.”

Dave-“Call me at 9 tonight, I’ll let you know where we are at.

I agree about the 2/3 interchangeability in a lot of cases, but both Ball and McNeil are only 6'4"-6'5", that's pretty short for a forward wing.

If Hurley was having a hard time finding minutes for Ball, can Hurley find enough NIL and minutes for
Paul. Hurley desperately needs a decent 4/5.
Adding another wing is not a priority
A 1-4-5 is
You have two freshmen wings who duppose to be the real deal . behind a 30 minute guy you’re trying to move into the latterly and a 20+ minute senior
There are 10* minutes at the one available plus as many a 15 each st the 4-5
Unless he is a Newton type combo guard who can play some one and one of those wings can play the 4 you simply don’t have the minutes

💯! Well said but correct on all counts ! The Ross Landrew competition/ rotation will be a huge boost to this years team

Yeah, I didn't word that well at all. I agree, this would make a Joey C type moot.

Apparently County will be our backup PG.
I like that plan. With Solo back at SG in 27, knowing whether County can be our Tristan Newton in 27 is rather important. Either he can or can't, but you have to find out. Still need somebody else who can play PG in case Silas is injured. The #2 center is priority #1 right now.

I think we have the money we need to keep up with the top 10 to 15 teams in the country. In this NIL era we have to compete. This is Connecticut man, this is the main university in a wealthy state. This is the #1 sports draw in the state. Hurley puts his roster together differently than some others, we don't want a bunch of straight up mercenaries here, but we're still competing at the higher levels of compensation to get the players we want and need to stay on top.

I think we could use a shooter. We were counting on Ball returning to form.

If we're looking for a backup C and PF, and a Joey C type, then I think we've got the money to sign this kid.
This kid is Khamenia-level transfer. He's millions.

Who said he was having a hard time finding minutes?
Shooting guard and small forward: 80min.. Mullins 25 Landrew 25, Ross 10 McNeil 20
It's doable if you factor in foul trouble, injury, wonton women.
Ross will be unhappy with 10.
Mullins probably wants 30
Landrew may demand 30

Ball spaced the floor. Defenders were on him, he was never ignored. This matters. You need a scoring threat.

You're neglecting the fact that Khamenia will be our starting 4.

I don't think people have adjusted to the 15 scholarships.

We essentially have a second team of players who are not going to be used in games - we're going to bring in guys like Milllender or Koroma or the inevitable foreigners on their year in residence who are not intended to see the court. They're practice guys.
True but Millinder and Koroma saw the court, due to injury. Millender played in a March tournament game, due to injury. Last season, we limped into March with one PG on one leg. This past season we had 3 PG’s / 3 Centers. We need about 5-6 more players. We won back 2 back championships with deep teams and manageable, minor injuries. The past two seasons we’ve been heavily injured.

think about the major minutes Mal gave us at key times this season....early when Silas had foul issues and then when he was out/severely hampered

Fine.

I don't care what your NIL ask is because you're not getting it. You get free sneakers. Maybe a snack after games.
Bad idea Fish. If you feed him you'll never get rid of him.

Two guards just announced transfers to UNC today. If they are actually after McNeil, that’s a good sign. Obviously Kentucky is always a threat too, but they also have Wilkins, so who knows?

Originally I was like “how did we let this get posted and get to 6 pages” but then….View attachment 119887

No I still think we’re all a little too thirsty

This is from a few years ago… Not sure on his sources. Although I did talk to a guy in a bakery back in 2017 and he told all of the dirt on KO.
