Solo's Replacement - Paul McNeil

I would assume he takes Solo's spot as the starting 2 guard

so you think Braylon would be the 3 and Ross comes off the bench? That would be my preference for sure, but telling ross to come off the bench as a senior might be a tough ask. He's already returning so he's bought in one way or another.

Seems like a kid who would want to start if not this year then next. If he started this year as SG, moves Mullins back to SF, Nik back to PF, and Ross back to 6th man. If he's off the bench, we stay the way we are, but cuts into County's backup minutes since he would probably play 15-20 min. Either could work, but I am still nervous about shutting out County.

What I don't get is how this would affect the year after with Ball coming back. Unless he transfers again, that would move/keep him as backup SG, would he want that? And if he did stay as primary backup, we might kiss County goodbye.

I do trust in Hurley, but I really thought a backup 4 and/or 5 was what was needed.

Kind of a throwback shot form. Super slow, jumps really high, and kind of slings it. But the kid can shoot the leather off the ball.

Advanved stats look pretty good. Really good offensive shoooting #s (duh). Defense isn't particularly good, but neither was NC State's.

It makes sense. Shooters will create space for Silas/Landrew/Mullins to get to the rim. We need spacing.

Mike McKay!!!!!!

Same shooting form, same size, same build, and both of them are Mcses.

I know McKay is still alive but if someone told me this is his reincarnation, I'd believe it

this kid can shoot really well, not much of a slasher but would def fill a role and could get 20 minutes a game. I would think he wants to start but if true would be a nice get.

My younger brother's best friend is a manager on the NC State teams and apparently Paul McNeil is highly likely to be UConn bound. He had wanted to play for Hurley but there didn't seem to be enough minutes to go around. The Solo news yesterday was a back breaker, but it sounds like it helped in the McNeil sweepstakes. He's got three schools left, but UConn is top of the pack at the moment. Sounds like he plans on deciding by the end of the week.
IF this ends up being true: I love you.

A 6'5 ACC transfer who can score in a variety of ways AND finished last season with the 40th best offensive rating in the nation.

Honestly, if we get a guy who averaged 14 ppg, hit 43% of his threes and started basically every game for NC State, that's a hell of a get as a backup 2/3. This would basically mean County is the backup PG and then you can add a Millender as a 'break if needed' emergency 3rd PG.

Great shooter on high volume. Aside from the performance vs TX Southern, scored 26 vs UVA in the ACC quarters. ACC all-academic performer too. A little one-dimensional? Sure. But I would take a one-dimensional high-volume 43% 3pt shooter in a heartbeat!

Was under the impression though that he was deciding between UNC and Kentucky.
I hope for his sake he’s not KY bound. A place where careers go to die.

I loved him on those 90s Yankees teams. Hard-nosed guy
I was going to post that the best baseball play I’ve ever seen was from him. Paul McNeil misplayed an outfield single, and if he tried to pick it up, the runner would’ve advanced so instead from deep right field, he kicked it to the second base on the fly.

My concern with County as the backup PG is: what happens if Demery misses extended time? It's one thing to spell Silas for 10 minutes a game but he's a HS combo guard -- stepping up as the starting PG is a huge challenge. And it's not like the SG is a combo guard either. Hopefully Mullins tightens his handle but he's a wing, not a guy who can initiate the offense. I don't mean to insult County but I just have absolutely no idea whether he's capable of shouldering that load.

I think we need a backup PG who's closer to Smith than Millender, a backup 4 and a backup 5. And I think those are our needs irrespective of whether this rumor is true.

Would love this. County can slid back into the backup PG role. This kid is a plus shooter, has good size, and can play the 2 or the 3.

This is the guy Norlander was talking about.
Confirmed that this is the guy Norlander was talking about, or guessing?

42.7% on 3s (105-246). I wonder what the breakdown of those 3s are such as catch and shoot, off screens, etc. But still....

Sit back and relax for gods sake. J Mary Xmas.

85% of his 3 point makes were assisted. Catch and shoot. And off screens is a type of catch and shoot... it just refers to not dribbling before pulling.

From everything said (dad's comments re. showing more of his game, incl handle, etc.) I would think Mullins starts at the 2.

I think Braylon can do that regardless of whether he's at the 2 or the 3 -- and wherever he starts, he'll play both positions. McNeill wouldn't come here to come off the bench.

Then it’s not Norlander notable bench pierce

Norlander said, "They'll add another notable piece here in the next week or two that'll be a bench piece, but they're not done." In the same podcast he also had Solo slated to return and start. Point is, Norlander wasn't referring to any particular player, he just was commenting that given the current roster construction we weren't finished with the portal. Anyone could have told you that. Not being a hater, I love Norlander and Eye on CBB.

Nonetheless, this is a good fit IMO. Agreed that we absolutely need scoring and shooting with this Ball news.
I honestly couldn’t tell if he was alluding to a specific player he had intel on or if he was just speaking generally.

Not you- but why are so many posters concerned about who plays the two & who plays the three. Basically the same positions- both wings- even in transfer ranking breakdowns- they break them down by wings. Also, Hurley calls plays for specific players to get shots so this obsession of who is going to play the two & who is going to play three seems strange to me?

Hope he's right, I'm surprised how many posters don't think we need to replace Solo's scoring/threat of scoring. This guy fills it up on the catch and shoot three on high volume and great shooting %.
Man, this dude, Mullins, and Khamenia in the same lineup (at least some of the time). How do you defend that?

He's guessing like everybody else online is.

I subscribe to SC. I believe what they say, because they only say something they're certain is to happen. Other than them, and a couple people here, I assume everything I'm seeing is a guess -- sometimes educated, sometimes not.

Without revealing anything proprietary, and I think this is pretty obvious, I know from reading SC we are looking at bigs. I assume either or all of those would qualify as a "notable bench piece." But, seriously, you'd have to not watch college basketball to say anything other than predicting we're going to add a notable bench piece.

True but it is all about PT. Hurley is brutally honest. If/when he talks to him, will he like what he hears?

Classic Boneyard.

He dropped 47 in a game this year.
"Don't we need a PG?"
Let me translate. We don’t have a backup pg on the roster. Isn’t that a bigger need? Others like county, Ross or silas can slide to the 2.
