Silas Demary Visit

I would love a dept pg, like a backup pg from Yale or something…. Someone who won’t expect minutes but can play without throwing up if we have injuries or foul trouble
Like the kid from DePaul …Connor

Was never gonna be easy, but...

The name of the game is flexibility and the ability to pivot for the coaching staff. They already are looking for and working other types of guards in the portal. If they deem Silas Demary's asking price gets too high and/or the competition for him gets too great, they can let the other schools get into a bidding war for him and take up a lot of their resources and time and effort while Hurley and staff can go get another PG or CG with less competition for his services and at a better price.

I am still hoping for Demary, but he isn't the only one that can provide what UConn is looking for next year and what they need.

This one feels like an uphill battle. We've rarely been involved with kids drawing this kind of crowd in the portal, so will be curious to how it plays out. We can likely offer him things the others can't (having two PGs drafted last year, building up Newt to an AA), so if it's development & a showcase system, we have the advantage. If it's highest bidder or flashiest brand, likely not.

BYU has a notoriously strict honor code. Presumably they are less strict on athletes, but it's still a weird vibe.
They dismissed their leading rebounder, Brandon Davies, in early March of Jimmer's NPOY (smh) year just as they rose to #3 in the polls. They lost their next game by 18. They ended up reinstating him in the summer.

Inshallah we pull this kid, do we think Danny would target another pg as well with Nowell out? Correct me if I’m wrong more knowledgeable posters but between incoming frosh etc we have all combo guards coming in and no “pure” pg?
Did we have a pure PG the last two years? TN was more of a lead guard and shared time bringing the ball up with SC and CS.

In the event Demary goes elsewhere, is it Malachi smith or bust? Any word on Nait George?

Dude shoulda soaked instead

Agree this one looks quite tough in NIL competition. Duke, St Johns, and BYU are loaded in talent next year as well.

Newton was a point guard - maybe a bit unorthodox, but he averaged 5 assists before he got here, then bumped it up to 6 his senior year, which was top 20 in the country. In the postseason last year, he averaged 8 - Ryan Nembhard and Braden Smith were the only guys who averaged 8 this year.

But yes, we also had guys at the 2 and 3 who had point guard skills and we became a pretty impressive offensive team because we had so many guys who could score or create. Newton could run around off the ball and we wouldn’t skip a beat.

We ended up with guys with different skill sets at the 2 and 3 this year - and we lost Clingan’s passing too. Alex picked up some of the slack and doubled his assist total from something like 1.4 to 2.8. But it meant that a passing point (Hassan) clearly fit better and was our most indispensable piece.

Assuming Alex moves on, we have even more of a premium on a passer.

They amount of whining that goes on here when we either are recruiting against good programs, or playing them, is insufferable.

We want good players. Have to go against good programs, with NIL, to go get them.

Who is whining? Feels like the post you’re responding to is a very factual statement of the obvious.

There was never going to be a lack of suitors for a talent like Demary. Let’s not forget we are an indisputable blue blood program with a great staff top to bottom, and 40 minutes available at the PG next season. We have lots to offer. Sure maybe our NIL package can’t compete with St. John’s and BYU, but it certainly isn’t slacking either. If a player is willing to go to a school that’s a worse fit but pays more, we don’t want him anyway. I’m optimistic here.

Excellent point.

Newton was also what I call an elite closer. A guy who can take over a game in the closing minutes, score on-ball, get to the rim and convert on the free-throw line if fouled.

In his last season at UConn, Newton had a 47.4 FT Rate (186th in the nation) and hit 81% of hit FTAs.

Last year, Demary's FT Rate was 48.2 (186th in the nation) and he made 80.4% of his FTAs, so there's a huge similarity there and in UConn's system, he'd be a capable PG with elite closer potential.

Demary's 3.1 APG looks low for a PG, but Georgia was just 285th in the nation w/ a 47.8 A/FGM ratio. When Newton was at East Carolina, their A/FGM ratio was 63.1%, which was 5th in the nation, so there were many more opportunities for Newton to dish to his teammates.

Hurley's offensive system moves the ball beautifully, so if Demary ends up at UConn, which I would love, he'd have career highs in assists, for sure.

I don't think it's good programs as much as the "type" of programs that concern people. BYU, Kansas St, Arkansas and St Johns worry people more than North Carolina in the current landscape because of their "sugar daddy" situation.
