Liberty Acquires All-Star Guard Shoni Schimmel
May 2, 2016

NEW YORK, NY – MAY 2, 2016The New York Liberty has acquired All-Star point guard Shoni Schimmel from the Atlanta Dream in exchange for its 2017 second round draft pick, Team President Isiah Thomas announced today.

Schimmel, a 2014 WNBA First Round pick (No. 8 overall), two-time WNBA All-Star, and the Most Valuable Player of the 2014 All-Star Game, is a 3-point shooting threat and strong distributer of the basketball. Here's a link to the article about her coming to camp (again) out of shape:

LINK

“Everybody doesn’t come into camp in condition,” she said. “For me to come in the way I do, it’s just a learning process. I’m still a kid trying to be an adult. I’m human. But I’m going to give it my all. At the end of the day, I love basketball. Whatever happens, happens. I’ll still play basketball at the end of the day.”

Wouldn't be too sure about that last part, Shoni. When your team is trading you for a second-round draft pick the following year, well...

Now this one is a puzzler to me. I don't think Shoni fits NY's style at all - for starters she doesn't play much defense, certainly not much good defense.

I guess she is good on offense when she is in shape and maybe NY needs some ball-handling and shooting. But my read is that Atlanta was fed up with her because she's now two-for-two on showing up to camp out of shape. I wouldn't want to trade for a player who lacks professionalism in that way. And then she uses the "I'm still a kid" excuse? No thanks.

I think they may have just cut her if they couldn't find a trade.

Wow, an "All-star" for a 2nd round pick?? I mean you pretty much have to pull the trigger if you're NY. Wonder if she'll make the roster?

I am not impressed with Shoni's attitude in that article. Coming into camp out of shape for the second year in a row is inexcusable. She is an exciting player when she's on, but he stats are nothing to write home about and obviously the Dream are fed up with her.

I hope Laimbeer can use her, she's very talented and might just need a coach who can get through to her.

Yeah, I'm disappointed in her too. You wonder where her head is at. She's not a kid but a grown woman.

She has to pick up Bill's offense on the run or she may be out of pro basketball.

I like Shoni, and have followed her game with positive interest. But I think she is that kind of player who can single-handed shoot you into the lead, or shoot you out of a game. Depends on the day. Her defense is questionable (at best), and she has always looked out of shape. Still, she played a ton of minutes for Walz looking pretty much the same, so I will step back and let events play out.

Sounds right.

What is the success rate for 2nd round picks? I remember looking into this a tiny bit a few years ago and seemed like less than 50% were in the league a year later. If that number is correct - and I could very well be misremembering - then a 2nd rounder is almost a throwaway pick.

I think 'all star' can be a little misleading as it is to some degree a popularity contest and she has a large and very loyal fanbase that isn't really connected to her pro basketball career. When she is on she can be dazzling on offense but that doesn't happen often enough and the other end of the court is a struggle.

I think the issue wasn't the degree of fitness, but that it says something about overall effort and desire to be there. I'm sure there are players who are busting their butts in hopes of just getting a roster space, and then someone shows up out of shape? A message to everyone that you cant just skate by, and that hard work is recognized. Management 101.

true she didn't "earn" those. that said she looked AMAZING in those games. I make that trade any day of the week if I am anyone in the wnba. 2nd round picks are what not even 50/50 to make a team? even if she fails to make your team your not out anything. She is a great offensive threat.

Agree - but that is not a very good evaluation tool, not unlike the HS AA games it is all about the offense and not many even bother with the defensive end.
(I watched a few minutes of the NBA all-star game and it was basically a five on five slam dunk contest - the most ridiculous excuse of a basketball games! Hadn't watched in a number of years and didn't recognize what they were doing.)

An All-Star game is basically built for someone like Shoni. Lots of flashy play, jack up threes, play no defense.

I think it has to do with team chemistry (something we are hearing a lot around these parts...). If she, as a "star" player can't be bothered to get in shape for camp, why should the rest of the team? You lead by example. I would cut her too based on the coaches' comments in that article. (Trading her for a second round pick is basically cutting her, IMO)

There's a lot of hard workers on the Liberty...Shoni better shape up, or Trader Bill and Coach Katie will have plenty to say about it.

I believe one of the Liberty's guards tore her ACL. Not sure which one. So if Shoni can get into the shape she needs to be in, she may be a plus for the Liberty.

This is a good thing for both sides, IMO. The Dream know she is not the top flight PG they wanted, and got a high pick for her. The Liberty got the player who may be the best rhythm-changer in the women's game, and I mean the ENTIRE game: WNBA, NCAA, any International league. Frankly, she gives defenses whiplash. In a tight game, there is an enormous amount of value in being able to send this firecracker into the game to wreak havoc.

Bill Laimbeer has REALLY good team. Now he has a derringer in his boot, too. WNBA finals, this year.

They got a 2nd ROUND pick for her and a pick in that round isn't guaranteed to make the team.
