you have to be invited to the combine, Giffey is at an athletic institute training with a bunch of other college players
He also played at the Portsmouth Invitational 4/16-4/19. So I imagine they measure and test all the players there.

That's because he was measured at the Portsmouth Invitational, they don't do athletic testings tho

edit: looks like they have his no step vertical listed, not sure what the extent of the athletic testing was at Portsmouth but it doesn't seem to be as complete as what they do at the combine.

I mean I'm not too shocked at the low vertical. He's not a very explosive guy; his game is finesse. Don't you remember how he had such a hard time finishing through contact?

I wouldn't be surprised if PN's vertical is low as well

He had that step back three pointer even then. What a joy he was to watch.

There are certain guys whose games I just find very enjoyable to watch, everything they do on the court is interesting to me. It's rarely the most athletic dudes. Marcus Williams was a guy who I could watch all day. Shabazz is definitely one of those guys.

Too bad Marcus Williams could never really get his together. Thought he had the skillset to make an NBA Allstar.

He had his together imo. He had the skillset for sure, it's just that he was a relatively woeful athlete by NBA standards. And frankly was a bad defender to boot.

well he had the chance, I just think he didnt take it seriously enough. He had to work his tail off to get in professional athlete shape, and he didnt at all. He seemed to gain weight in the NBA and not in a 'lean muscle' way

Not everyone has a long nba career, it's not always up his "effort". Regardless he is playing professionally at the highest level other than NBA

I don't know... I thought he was an acceptable athlete at the next level who really just never cared enough to play good D. That's what I meant about not getting his together, never caring enough to become a complete and dominant player.

He didn't have a defensive bone in his body, and he was never really in great shape. His time at UConn we could excuse--2005 and 2006 he was the only reliable ball-handler--but by the time he was in the NBA and his defense and conditioning were still weak, he fell off the map quickly.

Fair enough. Could have been in better shape, but I don't know if it would have helped. He didn't have the ceiling athletically. And he was a glaring hole on D (which you can't have in the NBA).

If you are an explosive two foot jumper, you're most likely an explosive 1 foot jumper too. It's not a case of one or either, boat has some electrifying 1 foot jump highlights.

Not true at all. Many times it is actually one or the other. Or at least a lot more of one over the other. It was like that for me and I don't think I'm an anomaly. I wonder about Boat's one-foot explosion... if you could point to those highlights I'd like to see him throwing it down off one foot because I don't recall him doing so.

Well, in fairness, there are plenty of defensive black holes in the NBA. Curry, Harden, David Lee, Carmelo, Kevin Love, it's not a short list.

Marcus had the talent to play in the NBA, but I think once you get to the big leagues, you've gotta drop the class clown act and get serious about your craft unless you're one of those rare guys who can get by on talent alone. That wasn't him. It's a shame too, because as far as understanding the game goes there have been few guys to come through UConn with a basketball IQ like his.

yea I'm jot seeing the one foot stuff from Boat either, even his under the basket highlight plays come off of 2 feet, see the baseline fake, reverse layup against UK in the title game for reference

That was an amazing play by Boat. The timing on his hesitation move was at a pro-level. He will show us even more of that next season.

Did I hear right that Daniels won the team's annual 5K every year he's been in Storrs? Maybe he's just naturally a slow-twitch athlete.

Marcus Williams had a 28" max vertical as a guard. That's downright atrocious. There are no guards that "made it" in the NBA with the same or smaller measured vert (according to DraftExpress' database which goes back to 2000 or so). For reference, Aaron Gray from Pitt, the oafiest guy I can think of, had a 32.5 max vert. Dasagna Diop and DeMarcus Cousins are the only solid NBA players in the database with shorter verts, and they both had wingspans 8" or so longer than their height.

You could argue vert is a conditioning thing (better shape = you get higher), and Marcus Williams did have 12.4% body fat pre-draft, which is bad also. There are no guards who stuck beyond "had a cup of coffee" with a higher measured body fat pre-draft.

Which is not a great thing in basketball.
