It does seem concerning that as soon as we put in our bench in the 4th quarter they tend to get smoked by the opposing team’s starters for about 5-7 minutes. I know Geno is trying to get them some playing time when it’s a blowout, but it’s rough to watch.
So many problems. Sure they’re up 40 now but they might only win by 35. Haha.

It was a bit ragged initially, and SH played some good, scrappy defense. They deserve credit for forcing 14 TOs. But the main rotation soon took the game away. Our defense throttled SH’s offense most of the game, forcing 32 TOs. In the closing minutes, the gap was closed because SH hit several open 3s. But the game was a severe blowout until then.

Jana hit 2 midrange jumpers and drained a couple FTs, ended up with 10 pts on 4-5 shooting. It’s really hard to argue with that. And she deflected a pass on a SH break — the big girl running the floor!

Allie was 4-6 from 3 for 12 points.

I think the mask did slow KK down in the first few minutes. She drove and then backed out prematurely a couple times — one led to a turnover. Then she drove through contact and scored, and that seemed to rebuild her confidence. Go KK!
I've been waiting for Jana's mid-range game to materialize........she has a pretty good stroke from 10 -15 feet as I remember from her international games....

-An odd take considering they came in averaging nearly 90 a game, but this team’s defense will carry them to #13. Forced 32 TOs today.

-took bad the Pirates were missing Jada Eads. Seton Hall has a nice team. The rematch later this month will be interesting.

-“We don’t have to lead the world in assists”. Geno’s quote during a timeout indicates that overpassing is a significant reason for the bump in turnovers.

-Sorry Geno, being unselfish is part of this team’s DNA. More than normal. 25 assists today.

-5 steals and 5 assists for KK. The mask did not slow her down one bit.

-Most teams would take shooting 43% from the field in the first half. UConn gets so many wide open looks that it just seems like they aren’t shooting well.
-Ash had 3 offensive rebounds giving her 25 for the year. Amazing for a guard.

-Sarah stuffed the stat sheet as is her norm but had only one TO. Must be the “bandana” look.

-Speaking of Sarah, she is now 8-11 from three in the last two games.

-Jana was solid again today. It is great to see her confidence growing.

-Always fun watching CD play. Even better when she scores.

-Fourth quarter was misleading because SH kept their starters in.
Side note. Allie actually did hit 5 threes in a row. The last one didn't count because a whistle was blown for some off ball foul. Then she missed her next one, so four made is all that went in the book. Not bad.

“Concerning” that freshmen, injured reserves, and bench players aren’t ready to play another Division I team’s starters? Really?

It appears that many expect players to play their best against the best competition, throughout the season.

College players in particular, even during this NIL era, are not going to maintain peak focus and performance throughout the year. There focus will be best at the beginning and end of seasons, waning at times during the middle. Their focus will also be best against the best teams, waning at times against lesser competition.

Folks should not be concerned by lapses in focus and performance during the middle of the Big East season if we continue to win convincingly.

Glad CD was able to play and get on the score sheet. Sarah and Azzi are unstoppable. KK looked like her usual self. I thought Jana played very well too.

Slight cleanup on the turnovers. I think as the team continues to get into a rhythm with different players coming in and out during more “bench heavy” games like these, they will decrease even more.
Nine of the turnovers were by starters. That is where the concern should be if there is any concern.

It's easy to look at the final score - a 36 point win over probably the 3rd best team in the Big East, and say "great!"
  • Sarah with 18 points but not enough shots IMHO (only 11)
  • Azzi with an off shooting night but 16 points
  • I thought Jana looked really good in her minutes
  • Allie really playing solid and scoring very well
  • Great to have KK back - she's so disruptive and the engine that makes the team run...
  • The defense is elite
  • Nice seeing Carol back
But:
  • At times too much passing
  • Half court offense looked ragged at times
  • Q4 with the subs in was really messy
  • I'll be honest - I expected more from Williams this season, especially as a senior with all her hype.
Overall a nice win, but at this time of the season, IMHO Geno needs to look at areas the team is deficient and work on that for the rest of the year.
The Team is just bored, who can blame them.

I did hate that seton hall scored at will in the last 5 minutes of the game. I am sure that sounds like nitpicking; but I was frustrated watching that.

I'd add that the last one came on a pass Kayleigh made that was a little off target, forcing Allie to reach to corral it and then re-adjust before shooting.

Good comments. Two issues I would love to see resolved by the playoffs:
-A large percentage of UConn's turnovers the past 3-4 games have been when trying to force the ball to Sarah, or too many passes on fast breaks, even when the passer has a 5 foot shot. Strong's 5-7 footer is usually a much higher % shot than other's layup.

Hard to complain about a blowup win, but the sloppiness needs to be cleaned up. Does not matter too much in the BE, but the execution needs to be crisper in the NC tournament. Lazy passes, no good. Pasing up an open shot for a pass that sometimes gets picked off, no good. This cannot be allowed to be habit forming.

Very similar to the Providence game. I think, between the two games, Geno can be seen, saying multiple times, "Shoot '**n ball".
Heckel, Shade and Strong are the main culprits. Heckel, especially , is alone under the basket and passes the ball. Something is going on with her. Strong just wants other people than her to score , but when she shoots without thinking it just about becomes automatic.
I am big Shade fan, but her offense needs to improve; defense she is fine.
The real thing to work on is Serah Williams. After she gets the ball, she literally dips at the waist before she goes up which allows the defense to cover her. Shooting 50% from point blank is not acceptable when you include all the turnovers getting her the ball.
Lastly, we can pin point in the game when Geno calls off the dogs. We go into a zone and the starters will be pulled in short order. Against our starters man-to man, Seton Hall could barely get a shot off. He really doesn't want to embarrass his fellow BE coaches.

Why?

How many minutes you think that unit is going to see in the Final Four?

Just please recognize they are bench players for a reason and they aren't working as a unit for many minutes at all while the team's they tend to play late are top tier units for that team. because they don't pull their top players right away.

Glad to make it to the game (my attempt at the Marquette game was thwarted by CT traffic. I just turned around. sigh). Crowd was big, but subdued.
Thought Jana looked strong and care-free.
Was interested to see that Seton Hall pressure/quick double team on the ball caused some problems. Something to work on.

Can't recall the exact phrasing from CD, but post-game she said something to the effect of, "Don't confuse not scoring with not playing well." She felt good about looks, shots just didn't fall.

Had to chuckle when Geno was contesting an out of bounds call. Apparently the ref told Geno he must not have been watching. Gene responds “Me? I’m not watching?” Glad to see Jana looking a bit like her FIBA days by making a couple longer than a layup. And she made her bunnies. Still a work in progress on defense. What’s up with these slow starts? Being a somewhat elderly person I found my self looking at the box score,at beginning of game, to see who number 21 was. How bout that head band!
