Greenberg is pretty tight with Hurley and the program. On the Pat McAfee show (please don't turn this thread into a debate on McAfee) Thursday Greenberg said that UConn doesn't have a big NIL but that the school is giving men's basketball a large portion of the revenue share. I'm thinking that we must have a big enough NIL to keep Hurley at UConn. What gives?

It means there are not a lot of deep pocket donors, who want to provide NIL money for the UConn basketball program

If NIL is the primary driver of bringing the best talent then why would Hurley decide to come back to UConn if he knew UConn was under resourced compared to other programs that were interested in hiring him?

Do we have a near million dollar player? St. John’s has Richmond and what does Ejiofor get?
There is no info on what these players get for NIL.

Because the school has done everything it can to be competitive. NIL wasn't the reason why this year's team sucks. It was that we did bad job in identifying the SG we got as being able to play PG effective for us and be a big time scorer from that position.

We have been told many times, including from people involved in the collective, that UConn is very competitive with its NIL. I'll take their word for it.

I'm sure Hurley negotiated some kind of NIL requirement in his contract when he had the leverage for a big contract last year. Coaches have to do that these days.

We just got 3 McDonald's All Americans. I have to imagine they got NIL deals that were enough to convince them to come to UConn. They all had many options of schools to go to although NIL might not have been their biggest concern.

Then there's this from a Candid Coaches article this past August.

Which three programs do you believe have the best NIL situations?

Yes, unfortunately that is one of a handful of reasons. Getting Tarris was great and they need to keep Tarris after this season, but I will say, I don't think this staff is fully utilizing Tarris' skill set and keeping him fully engaged, and no I don't mean starting him. Tarris needs to be more of a priority in this offense.

As for Mahaney, I am not writing him off, but I think trying to convert him to a pure PG was a mistake from the get go. Once the staff realized that, it ran into the issue of Nowell getting injured in the season and thus not progressing as a PG which would have allowed Mahaney to play off the ball more and play less PG duties (not completely eliminated).

Because he loves it here, he wins national championships here, he gets paid a gazillion dollars here, and the school and state will continue to provide him the resources to compete for national championships.

Anything coming from Seth Greenberg regarding Dan Hurley is coming right from Hurley himself
IMHO Greenberg said this for two reasons
First, Hurley knows he’s going to need more nil
Dollars to continue to compete
The southern schools, and to some degree, the Big Ten are culturally more inclined to donate money through the present system, or under the table as I was done in the past
This was obviously a preemptive strike by Hurley
He sees that it’s becoming an arms race with money to get the best players and he probably doesn’t have the money close to song has competition
The second reason is they give him cover for a season that did not live up to his proclamations and the fan bases, expectation
After a few years in the present system, it’s pretty obvious that’s a be a top 20 team you’re going to have to have top $20 to spend or get very lucky

Good points - and there is no question $$ = success going forward as getting the most proven and mature talent will be the blueprint.

UConn will need more NIL$ just to keep a couple of current players projected to have big impact next year. I can only imagine the budgets of some of these SEC / BG12 / BG10 teams we're competing with for players.

Some of the Big East teams we're competing with for players as well. They suck because of Neptune but Nova paid Dixon 1.7 million this season and they paid Wooga Poplar about the same this season. Johnnies players got around 4 million this season and Repole will open his pocketbooks more now that he sees what it gets them.

Another reason we need football to have another good season and get us out of the Big East.

Bingo. Anyone who wouldn’t leave the Big East for the Big 12 either isn’t a serious person or doesn’t understand the implications of NIL. We’re in the midst of having 2 super conferences (SEC+Big 10) and sooner or later the only other relevant conference will be the Big 12. No team other than us in the Big East does well in recruiting. We’re very lucky to have a resurging St. John’s in our conference otherwise the Big East would be irrelevant within 2-3 years, maybe sooner. A move to the Big 12 would do wonders for recruiting, revenue, and it’s simply a much more competitive conference top to bottom.

House settlement is going to help the Big East, well everyone except for UConn.

Last year for example, I know firsthand that a big 12 school poached a kid 3 days before the portal closed and offered him 750k. He would be a marginal starter for us.
