Semi OT: Unwritten rules

There was some discussion earlier about unwritten vs written rules. Here's a couple that we are all familiar with and that I'm sure we all agree with, although they are not mentioned in the written rules. Feel free to add any others.

1. When the opposing coach runs up the white flag - pull your starters.
2. When the game clock is off, you have the ball with a comfortable lead - dribble out the clock.

Competition isn't just about the rules. It's about sportsmanship and respect.

Oops, BYU just violated the unwritten rule. Up 12 w/ under 20 seconds left and a slight difference between game and shot clock, drilled a 3 w/ about 15 seconds left. Could've virtually dribbled out the clock. Gonzaga got 'em back w/ a 3 at the other end though.

What about when UConn allowed Laura Ferreira of USF to score a basket at the beginning of the game at the end of the regular season, and then appeared to play actual defense when UConn got the ball immediately after that. Pheesa did get an easy layup, but it appeared that USF was trying to protect its hard-won 2-point lead. If they were actually trying to play defense at that point, it's worse than anything UCF did.

She was fine when she was at Albany. Her team actually played UConn back then with no problems.

She’s not that young. 52 years old and been coaching a long time. 28 years is long enough to know the do’s and don’ts.

There was an agreement between Geno and Jose for Ferriera to get an uncontested layup off the tip off. In return UConn got an uncontested layup by Crystal, not Pheesa. The "actual defense" was fake. We were at the game.

The "defense" was probably to defend the "sanctity" of the game that was so rudely insulted by Nykesha Sales' basket. Considering the crap (and death threats!) Geno got after Kesha's basket, it was probably his idea to play some defense.

Actually, it was Crystal who scored the opening layup, and while USF set up in a zone, they never moved or attempted to defend UConn in any way. They were told to give up an easy layup, which is exactly what they did.

I would like to get rid of the unwritten rules. We drove down from Canada to watch Maya Moore, a long trip, and when Geno took Maya out early we screamed for him to put her back in. That's probably the only time I'd seen UCONN live in the last 10 years and we wanted to see the starters play; it's so rare for us to get to watch womens basketball at that level and 40 minutes is not that long. If UCONN appreciates the work the bench puts in enough to reward them with minutes, that's fine, that's a UCONN team decision, but I don't see it as a sportsman-like thing to spare the feelings of the opposing team. It's about appreciating your own bench and protecting your starters.

On another occasion, an opposing team pulled their starters in a game I was playing in. I found this insulting, like the other team was just so, so good we didn't deserve to be on the court with them. As a competitive athlete this then fuelled a fire to turn it up a knotch against the subs.

Early in Crystal’s freshman year she drove to the basket when the shot clock was off and UConn was way ahead. She never did it again; presumably after a pretty stern talking-to by her head coach.

Geno runs his offense no matter the score, so long as there is more than 30 seconds left in the game, so as not to incur a shot clock violation. To just dribble around and let the shot clock expire would be terribly insulting to an opponent, imo. Polly’s shot vs Syracuse was while there was still sufficient time in the game for the shot clock to expire.

Interestingly, a year later when Syracuse was getting blown out by UConn in the 2nd round of the tournament, Coach Q slowed down his offense in the last minute of the game and deliberately incurred a shot clock violation because he didn’t want UConn to score one more basket to hit 100 points.

These rules only apply to the winners.. so Geno need to adhere to them. On the other hand, UCF was on the losing side, so not applicable.

He should have been. Many NBA players have been attacked for doing less than he did at the end of a game that is already decided.

Trying to physically harm another player bc you're embarrassed or got your feelings hurt is chicken***t. Just like the horse***t "unwritten rules" in baseball that have pitchers throwing a ball 95 mph at a guy's head bc he flipped a bat or took too long to round the bases on a HR. Excuse my language in advance, but doing stuff like that just makes you a little bitch.
