A somewhat raggedy US team crushes a short Mongolia team 21-8. I actually felt sorry for the Mongolian trying to box out Ayanna, who dominated the boards and lead the US in scoring, mostly with putbacks. Next up: Russia.

Yes, the Russia game is at 12:25 pm today and should be the best and only competition the USA faces in the tournament.
The more I watch Williams play, the more I like her. She's class of 2023 and I hope UConn is pursuing her aggressively.

I take that back. Russia has already lost to Belarus, a team the USA beat earlier in tournament. So who's the second best team ?
Probably someone among Germany, Spain, Hungary and Belarus.

Russia beats USA 20-17, allowing Russia to stay in the tournament. I know this is a different game, but the one on one by Barker and Williams lost this one. It was perfectly clear they didn't want anyone else to score except themselves. Very selfish, and thats why they lost. Maybe they should look at the olympic 3x3 to see how the game should be played.

Up until this game the US team hadn't bothered to play team ball. Each player merely took the ball in and went one on one to the hoop. When Russia forced them to pass the ball the US still declined and tried to force it to the hoop. They paid the price. In contrast the Olympic team played team ball and showed themselves to be the more versatile team, and a winning team.

I agree, the USA played, how should I say this, unwisely down the stretch. Losing first the lead and then the game. No picks, no passing, too many fouls and Russia was flopping all over the court. Lack of experience in 3x3 showed.

A " not smart " game. Too many USA fouls EARLY, TOO MANY
USA fouls LATE!! Russia gets extra free throws due to the " penalty
situation" and MAKES THEIR FREE THROWS. Not a pretty game
for the USA. Now a "wait and see" if USA will play Hungary ( remember
HUNGARY is the host team ... a crowd favorite!!!) or Estonia. USA
will play the LOSER of ESTONIA vs Hungary game later today ( I
think it will be at 2:55 PM EST ???? Note that the loser of this game
( i.e. D2 team) plays the USA. Russia plays the
winner ( i.e. the D1 Team). SEE THE QUARTER FINAL game Schedule for
August 29 . Right now these appear to be EARLY MORNING GAMES , but
I have been wrong on this before and times have been changed in other
game scenarios. Play SMART USA, Team Ball! Does anyone think
that being able to "out-physical" Mongolia in the previous game worked against
the USA in the RUSSIAN GAME?? MAYBE!!

I just revisited the USA game against Mongolia. OUCH!
As others have mentioned NO team play. Drives into " traffic'
with missed shots. Sloppy passes, not covering the 3 pointer
shooter ( i.e. the two point shot). NOTE Mongolia scored more points
against USA than Mongolia scored against Russia. In these last two
games the USA made the unpardonable error of NOT clearing out the
ball ( out behind the 3 point line ) before going in for a bucket, of course,
the " bucket" was waved off , the ball reverting to the other team. OUCH!!
The USA team looked like a bunch of " SHOOTERS" not " PLAYERS"!!
NO DISCIPLINE!! I trust that they ALL got an earful from the USA
coaches. In this format a HOT, Disciplined team, with giving fewer
fouls, and MAKING ONE'S FREE THROWS, WILL WIN, just ask RUSSIA!
What a comeback for the RUSSIANS. RUSSIA has been getting tougher
and better, and smarter as the tournament has progressed. NOTE:
Belarus has two 15 year old players, (3?) and one 16 year old. Watch
the Belarus player, "Polina" ( her first name ), # 16 with the face mask!!

USA plays ESTONIA , the loser of a 13 -12 decision to ( host ) Hungary.
Russia plays HUNGARY At one point the teams had a combined
more Fouls !! than total points!!!! It almost looked like the USA/ RUSSIA
game with Estonia creeping back because Hungary had 10 fouls and was
in the PENALTY situation. That was the DEATH of USA in the RUSSIAN GAME.
After 10 fouls against your team, the PENALTY is that on each following foul
against your team, the opposition gets:...... TWO FREE THROWS AND
AND .. AND... your opponent gets another POSSESSION of the ball.!!!!.
Play SMART USA!!! More fouls ==== Penalty situation!!
As the FIBA announcer said : " RUSSIA made the IMPOSSIBLE, POSSIBLE!!"
It may be painful to watch , but I may have to see that " upset??" again.
Hungary looks like a " team playing as a team" and with some discipline
and they do a nice job of filling the passing lanes. LET THE GAMES CONTINUE!

Our girls learned a painful lesson today, they were humbled. They didn't believe they could lose. They'll make adjustments, and not lose again.

So Ayanna didn't slam during the second FIBA U18 3x3 game today but it was clear that she wanted to during the warm-ups. But because there is only one basket in 3x3 both teams warmed up at the same time and every time Ayanna approached the basket, there was a Slovenia player in her way.

Her play definitely improved today with much better shooting, including a mid-range jumper and 3 for 3 at the charity stripe. USA won in a crusher 21-7 mostly due to great beyond the arc shooting from KiKi Rice and Kayla Williams who both had great games.

We'll keep a lookout for that forthcoming slam and will report back....

I agree with most that was said. Early in the game Russia determined that they could not drive on Ayanna so concentrated on the others. There were some real nasty fouls on both teams but Russia flopped better and knew how to draw fouls. The USA would do better against a more disciplined team. Team needs to make their foul shots. Williams did not have a good game against Russia missing her outside shot and giving some real easy to call nasty fouls which started right after Russia had the unsportmanship foul against her.

This young US team has yet to master the pick & roll and all the many options off of it, which is the mainstay of 3x3 basketball. The US Women’s Olympic 3x3 team wore other teams out running the pick & roll. Of course it certainly helps when Steph is setting the picks.

With only 12 seconds to get up a shot, and without an effective pick & roll offense, for the most part, the US is going to try to take teams off the dribble and crash the boards. That’s pretty much what they successfully did in the first 3 games. Against Russia, they came up short.

At this point, I don’t expect the US to dramatically change their game plan. They just have to execute better.

I didn't watch all of it, but it seemed like mostly 1 on 1 play for Team USA. I did watch the last 2 minutes and it was just a horrible display of "no team basketball". Just attack the basket and hope to be bailed out with a foul call. That style is my least favorite way to see the game played. Team USA deserved the loss. But hopefully they will learn, and not double down on a losing strategy in the future.

I just reviewed the full USA vs RUSSIA game! EVEN MORE PAINFULL
THE SECOND TIME AROUND. I saw the "flops" and the unsportmanlike
conduct. But , I think , that was part of the game plan, get us annoyed
and not play smart. Plus all those USA BUNNY misses, and early missed
free throws by the USA. Bucorova # 12 is one tough/nasty dude! but, she
made something like 9 points in the last minute! Russia needed to get
11 points in under 2 minutes and THEY DID IT! The announcer had it
correct = with 40 secs to play the USA SHOULD HAVE let RUSSIA score
one point at a time and when the USA gets the ball back STALL for
up to 12 secs. ( scoring or not) , let RUSSIA get the next basket for one
point, USA gets the ball back = STALL again ( or make the free throws), etc TIME WOULD HAVE RUN OUT ON THE RUSSIANS!!! Of course there were some
dubious calls made in the last minute against USA players, but, there was
NO NEED TO FOUL = just let them score, by fouling them you give them
two free throws AND THE BALL BACK. P.S. Spain is a power in the other
bracket IMO. Ayanna did well, ?? of any fouls??, and two great blocks!!
KiKi and Janiah really ran up the fouls for the USA! OUCH TIME TO LET IT REST!
