I’m sure Yakwe didn’t play as well since he only returned to practice earlier in the week.

As a UConn fan I’ve been spoiled most of my life, but it’s kind of weird to me to watch a supremely talented kid like Jalen play for UConn and think that “he doesn’t have the heart/hustle to ever become what he could be”. But that is how I feel. Every year we ask for more effort and commitment, but I don’t think we’ll ever get it. He’s very good, and I can’t imagine how low we would have sank without him, but he’s missing that extra gear that our great guards had.

Polley, Carlton, Cobb, Vital, AG, Brendan Adams, Smith, Whaley. Those are probably the 8 that played.

Good, this is the level of discipline the program needs. Iron this out now before the season starts.

EDIT: Also spare me the overreaction. The kid (Jalen) has left everything on the floor the last 3 years despite incompetent coaching as a headwind. Yes, I know this isn't an isolated incident when you consider the freshman year blow up with Ollie, the scooter, and whatever this was. We don't know what even happened here so it could be small and petty but Hurley is implementing a culture more strict than the prior regime and this is how you mark the line in the sand and send a message. Don't diminish Adams' accomplishments for a mistake he made. Hopefully he learns that as Hurley has said all summer he has incredibly high expectations and he has to hit those marks to get drafted.

They said he used 8 players. So we know, Mamadou (injury), Yakwe (injury), Jalen (Suspended), and Sid (Suspended) definetely didn’t play. So that means one more didn’t play. Likely Kwint?

And if he had that extra gear, he'd be the best point guard we've ever had and a surefire lottery pick.
But it's not entirely his fault that he isn't that.

Unfortunately, I agree. It's not in his DNA. Never has been. That's not a bad thing personally, necessarily, or even for this team in a different era. But the team is searching for an identity, and his doesn't really fit the mould. He would be a very good 2nd or 3rd best player on a successful team. Not the #1 option.

Hit the nail on the head. Went to school with him as an undergrad/post-grad. He was at nearly every party I went to so I wouldn't be surprised if it was something related to that but that's pure speculation on my part. He seems content with his ability as is, not really sure if he loves the game. Pretty unfortunate because he's one of the best athletes we've had at the guard position in quite some time. Hopefully Hurley kicks him into shape, but my expectations are low.

I couldn’t care less about the score line of a scrimmage. No idea what JA and Syd did but I’m glad to see Hurley calling out any BS this early.

This. We have no idea of the severity and it could very well be something relatively minor but Hurley wants to set the tone and make an example. I’m glad he’s sending that message now.

Nobody can diminish what he’s accomplished, but most leaders would never put themselves in a position to get benched. The kid probably just went to a party on Friday, really no big deal, but this is his team. Following a team rule, no matter how trivial the rule is, is a sacrifice you should be willing to make.

Not a huge deal, but even though I’m not an old school thinker usually, it’s a little disappointing from a senior who should be our best offensive player.

Thanks. Any word on context? If I had to guess, it would be Hurley calling for Vital to pull his head in on gunning...and Vital taking umbrage.

Only eight players played. My guess is that besides Jalen and Sid, Tarin Smith did not play because of recent sprain. Yakwe was probably the fourth to miss action. Yet, according to Hurley, the guys stuck with Harvard until tiring late. This, together with Al's demonstration of floor leadership and 3-pt shooting, makes the scrimmage a promising success rather than the disaster it appeared to be in "the fog of war.'"

Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. Well, that day has come. We need you to use all of your powers, reach out to those in the athletic department, whom you hold in the palm of your hand and find out what happened at the scrimmage. No more gag order, tell this family what you know. If you can’t get any real info, don’t worry, make up stuff to keep everyone calm. Thanks in advance!
Wait don't you have to grant Chief00 a favor for this to apply?

Great post. The combo of Gaffney/Gilbert next season will remedy this.
