SEC vs ACC challenge (Predictions and Discussion)

Well, 2 of the games went to OT today.
 
Proud of the Wolfpack Women tonight! Those young ladies wearing Red and White left it all out on the floor. Career high for Zam Jones, season high for Zoe Brooks, a 20-rebound game from Khamil Pierre.

The final 8 seconds of regulation were a head-scratcher. State burned all 4 timeouts and only got one shot off, which was blocked. They had great difficulty inbounding the basketball.

Agree. Wes' use of his TOs is definitely a head scratcher. The plays he drew up for two chances to inbound at half court were pretty much useless.
I thought the Wolfpack had it won until they couldn't stop Chavez in the 4th.

Speaking of Beers, did you see the play late in the 4th quarter when she drew the "and one" (which she made)? I liked how ESPN showed the replay, from under the basket, and it clearly showed her shoving her defender away with her arm before taking the shot. Crickets from the announcers.

They have FIVE assists, all by Cooper. Yes the other 10 players have 0 assists.

Of course there are the classic “Tennessee assistants” — throw up a bad shot, get the rebound, and score a layup.

TN did get a bunch of TOs aided by bad passes and poor spacing.

Wes Moore has been a really good coach for a long time (& his team is young and not very deep), but they have absolutely no offensive flow - only hero ball (eg 9 assists on 38 fans made).
On the other hand, I was impressed with OU's ability to make entry passes into Beers under the basket and cutters in the lane, the tough Ms Williams (who looks like a WNBA player) and Chavez (who can get her shot off any time she wants - kind of like Pete Maravich without the high level passing at this point).

If you want to see zero offensive flow, turn in Stanford Tennessee. 97 points is practically the combined score!

Stanford seemed so unprepared.

Rule #1: if you are 2 feet away from your teammate, you’ve brought your defender and it’s very easy for them to double team. You need SPACING!
 
Pack let one slip away last night. Led that game for the majority of the 2nd half and then Chavez caught fire for a stretch that really turned the game.

Even still I thought State had a couple of poor possessions in the final 2 minutes. Up by 3 with the ball I thought Zoe had a bad shot. She over dribbled and backed into the lane and tried a fader that was highly contested and missed (maybe deflected i cant recall now) but led to a semi transition situation for OU and 2 points the other way. That was a huge possession, get a good shot there and potentially take a 5 point lead with 2 minutes remaining and you feel pretty good. Instead it's a bad shot where you don't even make the defense move and then they get 2 points the other way and now its a 1 point game and the crowd is rocking.

Right after that, State went to Pierre which is totally fine. But again, it was a situation where she got the ball and it stuck, the defense didn't have to move and she settled for a one footed fader that rims out. I just didn't really like the offense ran either time there.

Then, as noted on this thread, the end of game situation was terrible. Zoe had a run out with 8 seconds and Wes called a time out. I would have let it play out, it wasn't a clear fast break, but I like Zoe in the open floor in a transition situation with even numbers. That's her game. Out of the time out State had Zoe inbounding and Zam was being doubled. It was like they didn't consider that as a possibility and no one came to help, they force a pass into her and she gets tied up immediately. Another time out, a better inbounds but a wild sequence that results in a miss. Another time out where I think Wes thought State would be inbounding baseline and drew up a play for that when the ball actually was inbounded sideline. They looked confused and didn't get anything reasonable there either. Just a disaster.

All of that said - allow me to vent with my red tinted glasses. 3 seconds is apparently not in the rule book for Beers, she camped out down there a couple times. In a game that went to OT, the obvious double dribble from Chavez leading to a basket looms large. And Tilda's 4th and 5th fouls were super weak IMO, especially considering the physicality of Beers.

But - there are missed calls in every game and I'm sure OU fans could find some that went in State's favor that I'm overlooking. Overall this was a step in the right direction for the Pack. I really think the 4 of Tilda, Zoe, Zam, and Pierre are good enough to play with anyone. State has got to get something out of the 3 spot. Samuels played 29 minutes and didn't score and had 3 rebounds. That won't cut it. On the season Samuels is shooting it 28%, 25% from 3. State doesn't need the 3 position to do much, that player doesn't have to score in double figures, but they do need to knock down open 3's and jumpers because they will get them with the attention others draw. They needs that player to be really good at something...defense, rebounding or 3 point shooting. Right now that is lacking. Quigley had 5 points off the bench, maybe it's time for her to get extended minutes and see what she can offer.

Watching the Stanford Tennessee game a few things occurred to me.
  • Stanford looks like a typical Tara-coached team, just a lot thinner and with suspect guard play. Kate Paye is following in her mentor’s footsteps. And, yes, @Vowelguy is right about how unprepared they are to break a press or deal with a swarming defense even in their half court offense.
  • It makes perfect sense why Lara Somfai chose them over UConn. Apart from geographic considerations, she starts here and will probably average 25+ minutes. Of course, competing for an NC is a long shot, if that matters to her. On UConn, she’s skilled enough to have earned pretty good minutes, but she’d be lower on the front court depth chart. It would be a year or two before she’d have started in Storrs. As it is, she’s part of the core of a P4 program alongside Nunu Chloe and Hailee.
  • Tennessee looks pretty ragged even for a pressing team. Maybe it will get better later in the season, but they are no longer playing as deep a bench. Essentially a 9-deep rotation. This has to affect their energy level, which was key to their success last season. And perhaps as a result their shooting percentages are abysmal. I have a feeling Kim will be forced to consider a different style of play next season.
 
Just finished watching DVR of the NC State/Oklahoma game. At first I thought I had mistakenly tuned into the Saturday AM YWCA League Championship game until I recognized the coaches. Maybe not the prettiest but had to be the most entertaining game I've seen this year.

I don't see any games where the ACC team is the overwhelming favorite to win but there are a few more 50/50 games tonight.

I just looked at your list and I think the only game we disagree on is the Texas at UNC game. I have trouble believing UNC will give them much of a fight.
