But that's because the SEC is the best conference and every night is a tough game! :) And of course that is why most SEC schools (except for a few) schedule tough OOC games like The Little Sisters of the Poor etc.

The final tally is obviously a product of both team's commitment to lockdown, swarming, full court trapping, positional, rotating, help defense.

Any statement, or statements to the contrary are without question.......................SECcist.

It is true what they say.... anyone can beat anyone on any night in the SEC... IF... you can manage to score 60 points. Was it last weekend or the weekend before that there wasn't a single game with a combined total of 120 points? I don't understand it. It's not the defense so what is it?

On the SEC channel last night Nell Fortner, Andy Landers and a 3rd commentator were discussing the South Carolina/Auburn game and Fortner actually said that the reason Auburn was able to play SC as close as they did (16 points) was because of Auburn's lockdown defense. Fair warning, don't watch the SEC channel postgame show while having a snack. Thought I was going to need a tracheotomy when I choked on an apple. This is the same Auburn that lost by 17 to Virginia, 1 at pitiful Marquette and 7 at Florida Gulf Coast.

Perhaps it's selective lockdown defense.

Let's be honest - there have been some HORRIBLE losses over the past several days. Tennessee's loss to an Arkansas team that is 9-10. Kentucky's loss to 9-9 Ole Miss. USF's loss to 10-9 Memphis. All of these are horrible losses, and none of them are an indication of strength of conference. Memphis is just a bad team. So is Arkansas and Ole Miss. They aren't the absolute dregs of each conference (in the American, Houston, UCF and Cinci take that crown and in the SEC, it's actually LSU). But the fact that these really below average teams in each conference can play or beat "upper eschelon" teams says less about conference strength and more about the quality of the teams who were beaten.

For Kentucky you can't say they just had a bad game as they lost to a pretty crappy Auburn team too. Their next game is against a decidedly average Tennessee team so we'll know more about them after that game. In the American, UCONN, Tulane, USF and Temple are all pretty good (of course UCONN is great). The rest of the conference ranges from average to awful. The SEC has many more teams who are average and only a few who are awful. Clearly the SEC is a better conference, but I get tired of the comments that "the SEC is so great that every conference game is a battle and on any given night, anyone can win".

Ok - last night there were 7 games/14 SEC teams in action - a quick analysis:
Two absolutely dreadful contests Game #1 #10 Miss St v Georgia - 43-47 and Game #2 Ark v LSU 48-44 - average points per team 45.5
Game 1 - 37 fouls topped by 38 turnovers (only 15 steals) 19 assists, 36 total baskets on 103 shots - .359 shooting; 6 of 31 on threes - .194; and 12-22 on FT - .545
Game 2 - 36 fouls with only 30 turnovers, 16 assists, 36 total baskets on 104 shots .346 shooting; 6-20 on threes .300; and 14-30 on FT .467

One pretty miserable contest that someone had to win Vanderbilt v #18 TN 49-58 - average 53.5 points per team
Game 3 - 39 fouls, 38 turnovers (25 of which were not steals), 23 assists, 39 of 100 shooting .390; 5-19 threes .263; 24-34 on FT for a nice .706

Three games that were not miserable in that the teams shot relatively well and scored well, but still produced some shocking numbers: Alabama v #22 Florida 72-80; #23 Missouri v #13 TAMU 77-81 in OT; and KY v Ole Miss 65-73
Game 4 - 42 fouls, 65 TOs!!! 26 assists, and a combined 26-46 FTs .565 - Alabama lost by missing 15 of their 31 FTs
Game 5 - 41 fouls, 38 TOs (20 steals), but nice 38 assists, and high percentage FT shooting on all 39 attempts - A&M survived by going 21-25 on FTs.
Game 6 - 37 fouls, 35 TOs (only 13 steals), but 31 assist and generally good shooting by both teams - Miss won by hitting 10-26 on threes.

And one pretty average game with a very good team playing OK against an overmatched team playing OK - SC v Auburn 74-58
Game 7 - nothing negative really stands out and on the plus side 34 assists to only 25 TO with both teams finishing with better than a 1.0 A/TO combined fouls at 31 is about average. SC shot .519/.368/.650 and an overmatched Auburn still shot .345/.333/.786. The final score is about what Massey predicts.

If scoring and free flowing games are what generate fan support, the SEC model is in trouble!
