".....Peters added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Irish, who were Schimmel's pick in a matchup against Connecticut.

"Just because they're older and they're wiser," Schimmel said. "UConn is pretty young, so I'd say Notre Dame."

Can't say I disagree. LINK

This is the start of a bad tradition. So we're going to ask the players now for their opinions of who's going to win future matchups? Let's see - 16 teams times a dozen players average on each team - that'll be about 200 opinions for each Big East game.

Or maybe Shoni will just write her own column, handicapping each matchup the day before so we can get our bets down.

This reminds me of the idiocy of Mike DiMauro asking UConn players a half dozen years ago why the ticket sales at UConn's women's games was down. Like the team had sooooooo much experience buying tickets to the games, right?
.

Really, Wonk? You think that a player who has faced both teams has no insight and shouldn't be asked to assess both opponents? Asking players that question is an epically long standing tradition in sports. Heck, as fans we do it on this board most every game, and we know a heckuvalot less than, you know, an actual basketball player who's played both teams.

.
Yeah, really.

Find me a quote where a reporter asks a player his/her opinion of the outcome of a match not involving the player's own team.

Are you really going to make people search for something like that? I've seen a number of articles through the years where both players and coaches have been asked their opinion on matchups between UConn and another team they've already faced. Not sure why this is a point that needs arguing?

.
You changed the basis of the discussion, Nan.

Coaches weren't mentioned until you just did. I have no problem with asking coaches, and it happens all the time. Coaches have got a hell of a lot more experience to make that kind of judgment.

And they call me grumpy?

SS gave a reasonable, PC answer.

Doubt either ND or UConn cares very much. Just a reporter needing an additional angle to have enough copy to call his/her story done.

Thank you, Shoni.

Someone should blow up that quote and thumbtack it on the bulletin board in the locker room. If they still have bulletin boards. And thumbtacks.

I kinda of agree with Schmenddricks response. SS might have said both teams are hell to play against and both teams we havent beaten yet. I would think if you want to say a team has an edge make sure there is no chance of playing them again this year, like in the BE Tournament or maybe even the NCAA's. Never give a team a reason to play tougher because of something you said.

Thanks, ochoops. I actually meant it might give added incentive against Notre Dame. The more doubters, the better to awaken their inner honey badgers.

Schimmel also thought her Louisville team was going to beat ND. So I don't place much confidence in her predictions.

Geez, did you expect her to go into the ND game expecting her team to lose? The kid was asked a question and she have a reasonable answer- kind of why I thought the would beat us there…just hope we can turn the tables on them.

Given the way the season has gone so far she has an understandable point of view.
Nothing wrong with that.

That was my first thought as well. My 2nd thought was to have a look at the box score after reading this additional pearl from Ms. Schimmel..."It's never easy going against the (third)-best team in the nation," she said. "Just shots weren't falling that usually fall. I just tried to get my other teammates involved."

You can imagine my surprise to discover that she had (1) very lonely assist to complement her 3-16 sniping. Did she mean that she got her "other teammates involved" by giving them the opportunity for offensive rebounds on her 13 misses, or was she referring to THE assist? ;)

This is probably why not too many player opinions appear in the press.

I agree that ND is in better shape right now than UCONN........Lest see what happens on Feb 27th

.-.
Meeeeeoooooowwww!

I thought her answer was very polite. She gave her opinion and said she based that opinion on ND's experience. It not like she held a press conference to make this announcement.

At least she didn't predict a 35 point win.

now UConn fans have another player to "not care for"

She gave a reasonable answer...now we(Boneyard) are going tro critique honest answers from teenagers?

She basically gave the same answer Geno gave on BE Media Day when ND was picked pre-season #1.

.-.
I wouldve said the same thing ... there was no disrespect for UCONN ... just a fact ... that ND has more experience ... besides, we may face ND 3 more times!

Its not impossible that Feb. 27 is merely the second of 4 meetings with Notre Dame. Who knows how this will end.
