Sarah and Maya

.-.
She’s the reason I think this team will always have a chance once the tourney starts. No one can match up with her. Too big for the guards and quick enough to go by most bigs. The only thing this team needs is rebounding and we can get it done.

Are those Maya's full freshman season average or "season to date" comparison average? Me thinks Sara is going to bust Maya's numbers by the end of the season. Sara is just getting started!
Sarah, perhaps? And I agree with you, topo.

The caption for Maya is "Freshman Averages" and Sarah's is "Current Averages", so....

While I think Strong is capable of surpassing Moore’s numbers, it is probably a bad sign if she does.

The roster is loaded with potential. If players besides Bueckers and Strong come closer to their full potential, then the numbers of those two will be less. The guards still have a ways to go, but they are closer to realizing their potential than the posts. For example, Moore had Charles to “compete” for rebounds; Strong has Brady and El-Affy. That’s a stark difference and currently a boost for Strong.

Did you have the same response when Stewie was going to break Maya's record? I know she didn't but she was well on her way until she hit the freshman wall.

Sarah's first basket against Villanova was a pass that landed at her feet just about under the hoop. She caught the "short hop" and went right up to make the hoop in one motion.
Very few, if any players could even do that.
Comparing her to a Hall of Famer maybe early , but man, she is very special.

? KML, Hartley, Dolson and Faris were all close to performing at their peaks, so an irrelevant situation to this year. But for what it is worth, I would not have cared whether Stewart surpassed Moore’s numbers or not. Something tells me a preconceived notion lies behind that strange question.

On edit: I think the UConn system calls for balance and filling roles. If Stewart’s experienced teammates were not doing their part then I would have been against her breaking records. But that was not the case.

You said if Sarah breaks Maya's record, it would be a bad sign. I'm asking if you thought that Stewie's freshman year.

Good thing Stevie "climbed over " the Freshman wall as the NCAA tournament arrived! It was like the NCAA tourney gave Stewie her "Sophomore Leap" which launched the UConn "Fourpeat" that is looking to not be repeated in the near future due to the wealth of talent spread across the country.

If the "Fourpeat" is to be repeated, I pray that it is UConn that gets it done, particularly because the Men are looking to get the "Threepeat" this year [which has not been done since John Wooden retired from UCLA in the early '70's], and the women could make it the third sweep of the basketball championships to the ZERO for all other Universities.

Go Huskies!!!

Like you, I am for EVERY Huskie to be performing at their peak at the same time for the 6 game NCAA tourney!

Sarah is currently ahead of Maya's amazing numbers in 3 out of 4 categories, and we all know that "two out of three ain't bad":

? First, it never entered my head that Stewart would break Moore’s record by the time UConn suffered its first loss. I automatically assumed she would not. I also thought her teammates were playing closer to their potential than Strong’s, so it probably would not matter to me if she did. KML, et al, did not need to perform much better. This year’s posts need more development and the guards need more consistency. You will find in my previous posts that I have cautioned against Bueckers taking over too much as well.

Given that I have also cautioned against Bueckers putting up big numbers as well, thinking that would be a bad sign for the team’s development as a whole, why would you compare Strong’s situation to Stewart’s? I don’t see how that is a relative comparison. Perhaps you can enlighten me.

That is a huge compliment for Sarah. She really is a very good player and right now is as good as anyone I have seen this year in college ball. I do think that playing the small lineup though will not benefit her growth and I hope Geno doesn't decide to use her like he did Paige. These kids deserve to be developed to play at the next level and for Sarah that is going to be a 3.

As you correctly point out, the comparison of Maya's complete frosh season is inappropriate. To give an apples to apples comparison, I have the following for each after 15 games in their respective first years:

Maya Sarah Comments

Points 249 262 Sarah is pulling ahead

Rebounds 92 118 Sarah over 20% ahead

Assists 56 55 Essentially equal

Steals 23 33 Sarah ahead by over 30%

Blocks 25 19 Maya ahead by over 20%

Turnovers 27 19 Sarah significantly ahead

Fouls committed 25 23 Essentially equal

Of course, we know how Maya continued to get better over her career but Sarah has had a phenomenal start to her career and, barring injury, we have every reason to agree with Geno that this team will go where Sarah leads it this year and presumably in the years ahead.

MM is the UConn GOAT IMO. She came in ready to play college BB (according to Geno himself), she NEVER had a slump during her freshman season and excelled on both ends of the court. That said, SS is the CLOSEST freshman I have seen to MM in the last 14 years, no disrespect to Stewie and PB. Her command of the game, coolness under pressure and ability to not get sped up, make her the undisputed future super star of UConn WBB. She has no obvious weakness and is the currently the worst she will ever be in college. What an unexpected treat to have such a polished freshman to compliment PB.

Sooner than later Sara will be pushing Paige as the best player this season.

A little Paige perspective.

Since we’re thinking about historical comparisons, here’s one. Paige has played 100 games, and is currently the all time PPG leader at UConn at 19.8. She is slightly ahead of Maya. If this is her last season, she will likely end up with a total of ~120 games played. At her current pace, she’ll end up with ~2400 pts for her career, which would put her ~3rd on the all time list behind only Maya and Stewie, and ~tied with Phee. But she’ll have done it in ~30 fewer games than any of the greats.

Also, in terms of durability, Paige is second in minutes/g with 32.3 behind only Christyn Williams. Maya comes in 7th with 30.4 mpg. If this is an indirect measure of how indispensable she’s been, given the talent assembled around her, Paige has been more of a workhorse for Geno than any of the all time greats.

If Paige were somehow to get to 150 games (which would require her to return next season) she’d be very close to matching or surpassing Maya’s record. So, as a general rule, I think we should remember that Paige’s accomplishments are likely to have occurred in the equivalent of 3 seasons, while the other greats had 4 seasons to notch their records.

NB: I haven’t said anything about the greater competitive parity of WCBB in Paige’s era. In other words, a case could be made that Paige is one of the UConn GOATs.

This! She makes difficult look routine. Also when you see the highlights, every contribution comes from a different spot on the floor, in a different way. Really unbelievable as a frosh...add in she's so mellow and mature.

Sarah really gives up very little playing either 4 with Jana, or 5 with Morgan/Paige in the UConn system.

In both cases she's free to be out on the perimeter, or in the post. In small ball, as 5 she will also be passing/shooting from high post.

She can and has already shown her whole skillset. It's not like she's only buried down low waiting for an entry pass or a putback.

On defense, she's been guarding both opposing forwards and centers, depending on the matchup.

If Jana and Ice reach their potential, however, a future line up of Jana 5, Ice 4 and Sarah 3, would have all of them at their best positions. I just don't think that will be viable yet this year for NCAA tourney.
