As per Rich:

She may surprise by her readiness.

Every day in practice she’s looked a little more comfortable,’’ Auriemma said. “She had one of the best days she’s had since she’s been here this week in practice. So little by little … She has great basketball instincts. She kind of sees things and does things that you don’t have to be told all the time. She throws passes that only somebody that’s paying attention can throw. And she goes to the basket … when she goes to the basket she makes layups. She’s not your typical women’s basketball player. She makes layups.’

She makes layups, and as Geno noted, she surprisingly can finish at the rim.

She also has the best off-hand driving shot I've seen in the women's game, certainly for a frosh.

She'll get PT this year and will be a good one over her career. I think she'll score over 1,500 points. Maybe even 2,000.

After posting this thread and heading to bed, I started thinking about the last time we had 3.5, fast, penetrating guards. Can't recall a parallel situ.

What a nightmare for the opposition.

And we all know that Ms Chong can go off from beyond the 3-point line…Geez.

Put in the scrubs and get beat down worse!

Gotta rethink my points per game ideas.

Chong, to me, was a bit of a mystery this year. Rated 75th by HG, and yet she won 2 NPOY awards - the Parade POY, and National High School Coaches POY. How does the 75th player in the class receive 2 NPOY awards? And it's not like anyone really got it right - Blue Star and ASGR had her around 20-30 each IIRC. So which was it? was she a consensus top 40'ish kid, or one of the top 5 players in her entire class?

Given the comments about her and what she's done so far this season, I'm leaning towards a solid top 10 kid and possibly higher. Good for her and good for UCONN for landing her! It seems that as much as we dislike these 1 player classes, recently the "one's" that we've gotten have been nothing short of spectacular...

Watching the Phil. game in the second half I watched her bringing the ball up in the back court and she had her eyes down court looking to snap off a long pass. I saw her do that often in the streamed games from Ossining.

Geno has a knack for finding out what a freshman does well and building their confidence by only asking them to do those things at first.

"Saniya's coming along"?

Nay. In the spirit of the season, "Saniya Chong is Coming to Town"!

"Geno's makin' a list, checking it twice,
turning her game from to nice,
Saniya Chong is coming..to town!"

Hoop Girls is about as objective as a radio talk show host, they couldn't rank my dog.
I may be wrong but Saniya will turn out to be one of UCONN'S all time best guards. Wait till she has a game when she goes off from behind the arch is starts raining 3s like a Nor'easter!!!!

There is a well-viewed video from 2011 in a game in which she scored 54.

The last shot was just shy of half-court as her fans shouted the clock down…all net.

Throught the game, her calmness and composure is remarkable

I'm with you.

IIRC, she made another half-court shot in the same game! Or close to it. To beat a quarter buzzer, I believe.

GA knows how to pick them. He saw something in her.

It will a pleasure for the Husky Nation watch her grow over 4 years.

I think Geno and staff recruit by body type in some cases. Seeing Bria and Soniya side by side at Hartford game they are about same height, have long legs and and Soniya's arms look longer than Bria's.

Talk about using an inconclusive measuring device. For 4 years we have been arguing about Bria's height. Now Saniya's about Bria's height. ;)
