Liam is awesome and Karaban looked like a man amongst boys out there. They both will be fun to watch this year.
Agreed. Without any rim protection (all due respect to AK) we need better perimeter D and Diarra is in another tier compared to Mahaney. Also Loved his 6 assists. Can’t believe Samson fouled out against Sacred Heart with only 3 boards compared to Reeds 11.Diarra
Ball
McNeeley
Karaban
Reed
That’s my starting 5.
You don't think we're going to have any rim protection? LolzAgreed. Without any rim protection (all due respect to AK) we need better perimeter D and Diarra is in another tier compared to Mahaney. No Not compared to last year. Alex will be our leading shot blocker and he’s 6’6You don't think we're going to have any rim protection? Lolz
You said without any rim protection. We had the best rim protector in the country last season, that doesn't mean we'll have no rim protection this season. Reed and Samson will both provide rim protection and are better rim protectors than Karaban. No Not compared to last year. Alex will be our leading shot blocker and he’s 6’6
I wasn’t being literal. rim protection and rebounding were the consensus weaknesses of this team. Sorry for exaggerating but yet another weird flex by you.You said without any rim protection. Looking at Reed, Karaban and McNeeley tonight I don’t think rebounding will be an issuerim protection and rebounding were the consensus weaknesses of this team. Sorry for exaggerating but yet another weird flex by you.
We played sacred heart but if reed becomes the starter I agree rebounding isnt a concern. loved Liam’s 10 boards didn’t expect that.Looking at Reed, Karaban and McNeeley tonight I don’t think rebounding will be an issue
I agree everything looked much better when Hassan was running things. But then again, it took Newton half a season to mesh with the team as the point guard.Mahaney - most disappointing Husky of the night. Things seemed to stall with ball in his hands. Didn’t really have much presence out there, felt a little stunted at the pace of action. Him throwing a donut up as a starter against SHU can’t happen. Can only go up from here, but the PG position is one to watch. Had a hard time staying in front as a defender at times.
Hassan - tough shooting night. Did have 6 assists and the team generally looks better with him out there at PG, as he pushes pace and is so active, and defends. It almost felt like he may have been pressing on the shot as it’s clearly one of the reasons he doesn’t start.
We had 13 blocks tonight.I wasn’t being literal. rim protection and rebounding were the consensus weaknesses of this team. Sorry for exaggerating but yet another weird flex by you.
Karaban, McNeeley, Ball looked like pros. Samson, and Reed look solid at center. Point Guard shooting was pretty rough tonight, but I expect Mahaney and Diarra will be better. Team definitely needs to build chemistry as several teams players didn’t cut the way the passer expected.
Don't forget Nowell. He looks like a dawg out there. Maybe he won't break through this year but he will be great soon.I agree everything looked much better when Hassan was running things. But then again, it took Newton half a season to mesh with the team as the point guard.
I suspect they might like to start using Mahaney as an off guard at some point, until he better understands the offense.
This may be the trial by fire that he needs.
I just saw this comment and had already posted but I mentioned that he looked the best out of the 3. Mahaney is having trouble covering PGs with his lack of lateral quickness which is dissapointing but not surprising. When his shot isn't falling he really adds nothing. What has happened to Diarra's outside shot?Hot take prediction of the night based on way too small of a sample size: Nowell ends the season as the starting point guard. My god he looked confident running the offense.
Thinks Boston Celtics with us. LOL!A lot of firepower on offense. Think Maui will tell us a lot about just how good this team can be.
As far as things to lookout for/improve:
Solo is shooting how Hurley thought he could last year. But I would like to see more from his offensive game. Didn’t see a lot of drives outside of attacking close outs. This is against SHU too so I hope he can show that against better teams.
Foul trouble at the 5 spot against a team like this is worrisome. Have to fix that against better opponents. Reed played well. Think he’s going to continue to get better and better under Hurley as he really simplifies the game for bigs.
Liam is Liam. He’s perfect fit for this offense and he’s going to score effortlessly all year. Only thing I’m looking out for is his defense against higher level competition.
Karaban played like junior team leader today. 7 blocks is crazy. Wonder if his defense has improved enough to keep those athletic 4s at bay that he used to struggle with.
PG play has a lot of room for improvement.
We are an incredibly deep team. Wish we could’ve saw Ross today. My only question is if we can survive an off shooting night with the amount of 3s we take when it matters.
More important to me that it looks Hurley has another workable two-man split at the five. If they combine for 24 every night, we're golden. Both gonna have to learn not to give away silly fouls though.Great game. I tend to think he’ll be starting by end of season, but I am always a little hesitant to judge the big guys too much against the cupcakes. The physical mismatches are just too big.
Point of improvement is to have the guards dribble penetrate in the style of Newton. Mahaney needs to be a threat to score. This will create more inside possibilities. We took 30+ 3 pointers for a 42% closing rate. This is impressive and on an NBA style shot pattern. This rate of outside shooting perhaps reflex's the great outside shooting ability of our team but balance wins close games if it come to that. The penetrating guards were not present in this game.In a game where he had 0 points, I was impressed with Mahaney. He competed the entire night on the defensive end, which is a good indication that he has fully bought in. Also, I think he is smart enough to know that on this team that he doesn't need to hunt shots.
Still need SJ to not have the silly obvious fouls. He had two in the second half that were obvious to anyone but him. Still, I liked his aggressiveness at the offensive end.

And better coachingMcNeeley debut stats
27 mins / shots 6-11 / 3pt 3-6 / FT 3-6 / Rebounds 10 / Assist 2 / steals 1 / points 18
Flagg debut stats
30 mins / shots 6-15 / 3pt 0-4 / FT 6-6 /
Rebounds 7 / Assist 5 / steals 3 / points 18
Very similar stats. I think McNeeley has a better supporting cast.
It's going to be very interesting if and when these two freshmen get an opportunity to face each other.
Mahaney came in as an off guard and is being developed at the point because of his size and because you can play Ross at the 2 and get extra big on the perimeter.I agree everything looked much better when Hassan was running things. But then again, it took Newton half a season to mesh with the team as the point guard.

He’s definitely going to get much better. We’ve already seen what he is and that is a really good player. It looks like he’s still not totally in sync with the offensive system and the required decision making, but real game experience should get him there pretty quickly.I think we have to give Mahaney a little time. TNew struggled up through the middle of BE play and then became the rock we knew him to be. It must not be easy finding your roll in the system coming away from being THE guy being asked to put up 20 shots a game in your old program.
AMs role will need time. What was discouraging in this game was how little command he had out there, as you want to see some leadership out of your PG. He looked a beat slow, hesitant, and had a hard time on defense. It looked more like the open practice player than the URI player.I think we have to give Mahaney a little time. Hurley said Ross would have started today if healthy - wondered fro whom.
