It would have been interesting to see his dad in the NBA a little earlier in his career. He was already showing signs of injuries & slowing down. But it was great to see him make it into the HOF. He's currently president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.

I'm still waiting for UCONN's first Lithuanian sharpshooter. I've watched Cuse, Rutgers, Seton Hall bring in some Liths....I'm waiting patiently.

Yeah the Hall and RU……isn't the big kid for URI that transferred from RU Lithuanian? He's a nice player too…….

You need to start prodding the staff to get to your home country and bring back a major win…….

Wasn't Sr in his 30s when he finally got to the NBA? Damn shame he didn't play in his prime.
One of the best passing centers I ever saw.

Jr should fit right in w/ Gonzaga - Stockton's son did OK the past couple of years there.

If you mean Biruta, he left Rutgers 2 years ago. He transferred to Rhode Island & just completed his 1st season there.

He was solid for Rugters. I guess he was fed up by being beaten by the coaching staff! ;)

He musta said "Love Stinks" before he transferred! ;)

You will have to be satisfied with Jim Abromaitis for the time being. I know, I know he was from Waterbury.

I always felt SU's Marius Janulis would have made a great Husky. Also SH's Karnishovas in the early '90's.

Showed signs of a bottle of vodka a night too. Sabonis was a legendary partier, even by top tier basketball player standards.

He was an incredible player, and with modern conditioning and playing for a paycheck instead of the greater glory of the Soviet Union, he probably would have been considered one of the best ever.

Yep - He was 31 when he came to the NBA. He basically had 3 great years before his minutes and stats dropped off.

A recent documentary (30 for 30 on Divac/Petrovic maybe) had clips of Sr playing in Europe. What an incredible skill set he had.

Even with all the UCONN and Red Sox and NY Giants glories....seeing Sabonis and 2 other starters (Marciulionis & Kurtiniaits) from the 1988 USSR gold medal team win bronze for their tiny newly freed country in Barcelona in '92 ranks right up there for me.

There are some vids of Sabonis in his prime on Youtube. The guy was incredible. 7-3, could shoot, pass, and dunk on you. I'm not sure there's ever been a guy that big with such a complete skill set. Even when he came to the NBA and was essentially immobile, he was still a force for 25 minutes a game.

What made Sabonis a great player is was he was very smart, along with being a very big player. While he didn't make it to the NBA until his 30's, he succeeded by being a step ahead of the defense. He saw things that most players could not do today. His passing was amazing. And with his size he could dominate anyone smaller than him. Brings back bad memories of my Dad backing me down in the driveway & using his big duppa 1970's hook shooting over me as a kid... I still have bad dreams about that! Grrr....

I lived in Portland when Sabonis played there. We saw him play a few times at the Rose Garden. Amazing player could not believe how good of a passer he was. So we were in downtown Portland at a Mcdonalds and he was sitting next to us. We did not even notice until we stood up. He was a legit 7'3 for sure, and absolute giant, I felt like I was hallucinating when I looked up at him. After that on hikes and such we would have the Sabonis factor. Could Sabonis do this without ducking, crouching, crawling, etc...
