From the Register:

Although UConn is at its scholarship allotment of 12 (the program docked itself a scholarship for violations under Kevin Ollie’s tenure), it is still recruiting for one more spot. Nothing’s official about how that final scholarship will open up, but it appears Mamadou Diarra’s basketball career may be over. The 6-7 power forward has been beset by chronic knee problems since high school and played in just two games last season.
“It’s been a tough couple of years for Mamadou,” Hurley said. “He’s a warrior and a winner and a guy that wants to get out on the court, but he’s been just besieged by difficult injury stuff that very few players have to deal with — before he got to UConn, and pretty much since he’s been here.”
Diarra is home for break now and will return to campus for the start of summer classes, at which time some decisions will be made.

If he stays it will be on a different scholarship than basketball. We are trying to bring in another big currently.
Who? Doesn’t seem like they are pushing hard for Issanza.

Not sure. Only names I've really heard are Issanza, Manuel, and Coleman. Was always hoping for a reclass big but have heard nothing.

If we aren't sold on any bigs I think we should think about Langford.

Whaley showed he can give us some good minutes. Maybe he can give us more than some with experience.

He's shown that he's wildly overmatched at this level.

He played 83 minutes last year and scored eight buckets. Three of them came against USF in the second to last game of the year. The other five were scattered throughout the first 4 1/2 months of the season.

Hurley has to talk him up because he might be the only tool in the shed to back up Josh, but it's not a good situation for UConn.

According to Hurley it will not be any big that is still available to fill the gap. He may go for the next quality player or just not pick anyone up.

That’s not what he said in the quote above. It sounds like he’s not sure which way he will go.

Well he is going to be a backup so scoring isn’t that big of a deal as long as he plays solid defense and rebounds in his limited time.

I would think Akok may be used as a backup to Josh at times.

someone ask this man about his true feelings on jelly fam!

Sid had summer before freshmen year, entire year, last summer to work on his game. I hope he gets the message now but what was he doing for the last 2 years? You have an opportunity of a lifetime, snatch it with both hands and run with it.

That's why Hurley says this summer is very important for Sid. Some kids need to experience college and have their limitations shown up on the court to really get it. Sid's had that experience now. If he doesn't make use of it and really focus this summer on improving, then coaches have to start wondering if he ever will. And he doesn't want coaches questioning his upside, because then they'll give playing time to the Bouknights and Gaffneys and Brendan Adams.

I think he'll prove himself and be a player. But the onus is on him.

Agree. And nobody has the potential to alter this team like Sid does. I expect Carlton to be a little better, Al to be the leader and best player, Akok and the new guards to have ups and downs and contribute, CV to be a slightly better version of CV and Polley to make some strides. Sid though, if he starts hitting from outside and finishing around the rim, is potentially transformational. He has the potential to change a pretty good team into a very very good team.

Can he just turn into our version of Tim Thomas already??
