RIP Pat Summit - One Year Later

Nice bunch of quotes from Taurasi. No one took the rivalry more to heart than Diana. It's good to see that she is gracious in her "old age."

I'm more proud of DT for these comments than her winning an NC---Class, pure CD type class.
Pat Summitt--had dementia--and you don't see the disease until it's way too far along--I damn'ed her for her involvement with complaints against Geno, DT, Sue, Maya (and family)---now that we know what was causing her issues--if forgiveness isn't there--well????
It has been pointed out the Vols Admn most likely didn't have Dementia and could have/should have stopped the complaint. So as I see it---the UConn issue with TN isn't with Dementiated Pat--but with the faulty thinking of the TN Admin, Staff who could and should apologize --three little word, followed by a few more---We are sorry, and made an error in judgement--ask Maya and her family to accept our apology.. Will that happen???
I've become so Southern --I cannot believe these decent Tn Vol's would not do that.

Pat Summit is/was an Icon not just in WCBB but the Sportsworld in general. She earned the trust of the Tennessee Adminisration, SEC, NCAA and all of sports. She stood up for her program and her beliefs. I do not believe her illness was part of this decision back in 2007. She did lead Tennessee to back to back NCs in 07 & 08. Her complaints were about the rules of recruiting and the NCAA disagreed with her. Being a competitor like she was and in this situation. Coach Summit decided to cancel playing Uconn which was her perrogative! She filed the complaints the proper way through the SEC and NCAA! She Didnt Need to Apoligize to Anyone! Now that it has been 1 year since her passing it is time for everybody to realize that the University of Tennessee does not have to apoligize either!

Pat Summit made a decision and stood by her decision with the passion that made her a great coach and leader!

There won't be another. I think she handled the Maya situation poorly, but she built the game and like others have said, made it possible for the UConn dynasty. She deserves all her accolades. Pat wasn't perfect and she wasn't a saint, but anyone who tries to minimize the legacy is wrong. She Is one of the best in basketball, period.

Agreed

She made a public accusation of cheating against Connecticut in an interview well after the accusations were filed and well after the NCAA had rejected all but one self-reported secondary violation. That's the problem.

Cancelling the series was a good decision. It avoided many losses to her coaching record.

I feel like I ought to dislike you or your team given the way our season ended but I don't. (PS, I was rooting for you all in the final.)

They don't have to apologize but like the original (largely) groundless report, that decision comes with a consequence.

Standing by a bad decision doesn't make you a good coach or a good leader. It might make you a stubborn coach or leader, but not a good one.
Her passion made her a great coach and leader if you read it correctly!

"Pat Summit made a decision and stood by her decision with the passion..." That sure doesn't sound like a sentence about her passion. It sounds like someone who is being described as stubborn.

I played and coached a long time and I would not have apoligized either! I would settle it on the court! Uconn did have secondary violations which were minor so she wasnt completely wrong but to say she was not a good coach because of it maybe you should apoligize.

May I respectfully request that you read what you write before you send anything. Now you say you would settle disagreements on the court. But that is not what Summit did. She refused to play.

She was "completely" wrong! The 37 pages of TN's garbage accusations was NOT what resulted in the secondary violation regarding Maya's recruitment. The secondary violation was self-reported by UCONN!
UConn self reports secondary violation for recruiting of Maya Moore

What's really LOL funny about the whole incident is the SEC backed Tennessee's allegations, so you had America's Dirtiest Conference throwing stones at UConn. SEC schools commit enough recruiting violations on a daily basis to keep the NCAA enforcement staff busy for the entire year. And while it's easy now for some to feel sorry for her, rightfully so, for having suffered with dementia and a premature death, I don't think she had been diagnosed with such an illness back when this all happened, so excusing her behavior on that basis seems pretty silly. Yes, what happened to her was tragic and sad, but it shouldn't be used as a reason to exonerate her from making trumped up allegations with little or no basis in fact. Recruiting battles are won and lost all the time. It was petty and vindictive on her part.

Due to her legacy, Tennessee will never apologize for what she did. If UConn requires an apology, it's never going to happen. At some point, I hope it's basically swept under the rug forever, and that someday the two schools will start playing each other again during the regular season. It would be good for women's basketball. I for one don't see any reason to prolong the dispute by requiring any formal, public apology. What's done is done, and it's becoming ancient history at this point.

I hope it's never swept under the rug. They stopped playing UConn, let them live with it. Resuming the series would be good for TENNESSEE. They've become irrelevant - let them burn in hell.

I respect your view, and understand why a lot of UConn fans feel that way. I'm not sure playing us would be good for Tennessee, though. I'd expect if it happens anytime soon we'd throttle them pretty badly. It's tough to see how that would help them.

I feel exactly the same way about renewing any series with BC in any sports. We have a lot more reason to despise them due their lying and deceit during the first exodus of teams from the Big East, and their continued animosity when we were up for possible inclusion in the ACC in 2012. They have torpedoed us at every opportunity, yet we've decided to bury that hatchet and start playing them again in football and other sports. We're in the same men's and women's hockey conference with them now, Hockey East. Nobody has hurt UConn athletics more than BC has.

But at some point, it becomes somewhat childish to carry these grudges on forever. It would help us if we beat BC in the major sports like basketball and football simply because they're in a P5 conference, even though they haven't enjoyed much success with their major sports, other than hockey, since they joined the ACC. We did play them in a preseason men's BB tournament a few years back. I think we won that game by a very close score.

I agree in most real life endeavors it would be childish and unproductive to waste much energy carrying a grudge forever. But this is sports. Demons and evil doers ("the other guys") are part of what makes it fun. I will always hate Tennessee and, sorry, I will never like Pat Summitt - dead or alive.

This is not the place for a reading or writing lesson. But its hard to have a discussion on any topic with a person who can't express their ideas in writing. What you write is often not what you want to say.

1) I never said she wasn't a good coach. Please read what I wrote as I wrote it. Don't read it to make it say what you want it to say.

2) If the secondary violations were self reported, then nothing in the Summitt complaint was acted upon. That in itself is quite the statement.

3) May I respectfully point out that 75% of your sentences do not have to end in a"!". In fact over use only reduces its effect when used in a appropriate context.

4) I don't like it when people are criticized for their grammar or spelling on a board. But again this is about your ability to accurately express what you are trying to say, and misreading the posts of others.

How did she do this? Are you saying UConn wouldn't be good without Tennessee? That Geno would not be a legendary coach if not for Pat? Didn't they both get into coaching around the same time (Pat in 1974, Geno in 1979 before finally landing at UConn in 1985)? Does this imply that there would there be no Steve Jobs without Bill Gates or vice versa?

Pat changed the trajectory and the scale of the women's game.... Every gal who laces them up..... must say a thank you to Pat for advancing the game to the degree she did

I was deceived by the title of the thread. This is about Pat sewing sowing not reaping ripping.
