RIP John Chaney

I can’t remember the situation there with Calipari, but Chaney, like Jim Calhoun, saw through the bs. I’m pretty sure JC would have lost his mind if he was in the same conference with Calipari.

One hell of a coach and personality who got your attention even if you tried to ignore him. I love him for almost taking The Squids head off. His Temple teams always competed. Saw a lot of Calhoun in him and vice versa. RIP Coach

My first memory of Temple was the Marc Macon team 1990-91 that made a run to the elite 8 and lost to Carolina. I remembered this intense wild eyed coach and Macon just carrying that team. Of course over the next few years they had that Aaron Mckie/Eddie Jones teams which were pretty good. RIP to a coaching legend.

You know what they say, stay at a school
long enough and you start looking like the mascot. RIP to one of the legends of Northeast CBB

.-.
The greatest coach to never make a final four. It always seemed to me that Temple had always had a Duke or a UNC team in the way of the FF. His teams played you to the bone you were gonna be in a street fight against his teams. Calipari is very lucky Cheney didn’t get to him would’ve been a 1st round KO. RIP coach Cheney.

RIP John...

First time ever seeing this. Oh my. Chaney was ready to beat him into the ground then spit on him. Man, would that have been a sight to see. RIP coach.

I remembered that Temple had some great teams but I also remember that they were always at least good when Chaney was at the helm. So I just checked his record and it turn out the only time he didn't exceed .500 in 24 years was his first season when he was 14-15. His 2nd season he went 26-5.

RIP Coach couldn’t help but respect the man. He did it right, coached hard but also was out to make them better men. Heard a few interviews over the years a good story teller and a good man!

.-.
He spent 10 years coaching at Cheyney State. I did not know that.

He was a character like many of the coaches in the Big East and it would have been interesting to see how he and Temple would have done in the Big East rather than in the A-10.

Wasn't he famous for running 5 am or 6 am practices? And I read they were very tough, character building.

Notable seasons:
1986-87: 32-4 (17-1 A10), 2nd round (upset by 10 seed LSU)
1987-88: 32-2 (18-0 A10), elite 8 as a 1 seed (10 point loss to 2 seed Duke)
1990-91: 24-10 (13-5 A10), elite 8 as a 10 seed (3 point loss to UNC)
1992-93: 20-13 (8-6 A10), elite 8 as a 7 seed (5 point loss to Michigan)
1998-99: 24-11 (13-3 A10), elite 8 as a 6 seed, (21 point loss to Duke)
2000-01: 24-13 (12-2 A10), elite 8 as an 11 seed (7 point loss to Michigan St)

(A10 regular season champs 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002)
(A10 Tournament champs 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990, 2000, 2001)

Honorable mention seasons: 1999-2000 (27-6, upset by 10 seed Shall), 1993-94 (23-8), and a 3 year stretch from 1983-86 where he went a combined 76-17 (48-6 A10) but sadly just 3-3 in the tourney.

Overall his best season ever was by far 1987-1988 where his two losses were to #8 UNLV by 1 and to Duke in the Elite 8 by 10. Imagine getting to the elite 8 FOUR times as a 6 seed or lower, TWICE as a double-digit seed.

Notable awards:
1988 NCAA coach of the year
A10 coach of the year: 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000

Temple struggled from 2001-06 with 19-15 being his best season during that time but overall he was 516-253 at Temple, not an easy feat for a coach outside the Power 5 and overall 741-312 for his career and just one losing season in 24 seasons at Temple.

0-5 in the elite 8 must be painful especially since 3 of those losses are by a combined 15 points (and just running into a buzz saw in 1999 vs Duke) but perhaps the best coach not to make the final 4?

Seemed like an intense, solid coach, he always looked like an owl to me too.

I’m pretty sure the temple logo is modeled after him

Yes, 2 losses to Duke, 1 to UNC, 1 to Michigan, and 1 to Michigan St. UNC was an especially heartbreaking 3 point loss but Michigan was tough too just 5 points. Plus they had a very promising 2 seed team get upset by 10 seed Seton Hall in the round of 32 by 2 in overtime in 2000 and in 87, as a 2 seed, lost to 10 seed LSU.

Usually you let the body at least go cold before crapping on a deceased person's legacy.

Not here.
On the Women's Board it took 11 minutes for this video to get posted. Here, it took 18 minutes.

Saw them in NCAA opening rounds at the HCC in '88 ish. Chaney got mad at a ref, so during a timeout while his team was in the huddle he stood on the sideline and just stared/sneered at the official in an attempt to intimidate him. Bush league move.

Huh? JC literally did this every game for 25 years.

I went to Cheyney State
