RIP Eddie Van Halen

Van Halen was pretty much my high school and early college year sound track. Saw them Worcester and Hartford in 1984 with DLR. Saw the show in New Haven with Van "Hagar" that they taped for their "Live Without a Net" VHS tape. Saw them at Monsters of Rock in Foxboro in 1988 with Dokken, the Scorpions and Metallica.

A lesser known project Eddie did was with Brian May of Queen. Mostly blues. I think it was 4 songs. Here's one of them. A lot different that what's probably being linked right now (Eruption, Jump, Runnin w the Devil) and shows another side of him.

Brought a lot of joy and fun into the world for many and it will do so for a very long time on beaches, patios, bars and gatherings where a few tall ones are thrown back. That makes for a pretty good days’ work on the mean streets of planet earth. RIP

Love the shirt. Where and when was this picture taken? He always seemed to be smiling with "that impish grin" as ex-wife Valerie described it. Quite a life doing what you love, doing it well and spreading joy to so many.

Hartford Civic Center. Don’t know exact year, was post-2000. Years ago, a friend told me he wore the jersey during an encore. Found photo on a VH msg board yesterday.

Brian May is ridiculously underrated, and Eddie is obviously one of the all-time greats. I can't wait to get home and listen to this. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad that even though I was too young to see them in their prime, that I was able to see DLR and Van Halen twice (first in 2007 and then again in 2009 or 2010). They were fantastic both times. RIP Eddie.

Between my brother and I we wore out 1984 and 5150.

Saw them at the Centrum on the 5150 tour. It was my first concert. I don't remember the date because I was 9 years old and the set lists were pretty much the same for that leg. I do remember Hagar on the catwalk, the Jack Daniels' base, and all the solo sessions. Eddie played what would later be called 316, Spanish Fly, and Eruption.

It might be why I like the Hagar years just as much as the 1st Roth era.

May is also an astrophysicist, so...you know... in case the whole Rock God thing doesn't pan out...

Keith quit smoking earlier this year so can now live even longer. One of many disappointing consequences of Covid is the cancellations or postponements of concerts. I have tickets for a Stones show that should have occurred over the Fourth of July weekend in Tampa. Hopefully, this will happen next year but no guarantee as acts like Elton John rescheduled for 2022. I sure miss live shows as well as live sporting events.

Funny coming of age story.

I saw them twice on the 1984 tour. First in Worcester. At one point, DLR is in the middle of a song, holding a bottle of Jack. He stops and says "Awww, man.....I'm so effed up I forgot the words!" Of course, being idiot teenagers, we were high fiving at this and all pumped up.

A few weeks later, at the show in Hartford? Same song, same bottle, same exact schtick. We just looked at each other and were like "Aw, wow. That sucks."

I think you have exclude the Stones generally. Pretty sure they made a pack with Satan.

Seriously, though, are they even going to have to embalm Richards? It seems redundant at this point since he's ingested pretty much every chemical known to man.

"Embalming fluid? Yeah, I was pretty heavy into that in the 80's.
Totally smashed on that stuff during the Tatoo You tour."

I saw them in the Centrum in Oct '82 on the Diver Down tour. It was the 3rd(?) show that got added. Incredible show. Still my favorite concert of all time. Eddie was nursing a broken hand at the time, but it didn't slow him down. The band had just been given the key to the city of Worcester. My friends and I were so hoarse from screaming and singing during the show and so deaf from the ringing in our ears that we could barely talk to each other after the show. I saw them again with Sammy a few years later. Another amazing performance. Even though I preferred the DLR version of the band, I had to give Sammy his props.

I really wish I had gone to see them on one of their more recent tours with DLR just for the nostalgia of it.

Of course I’m partial to the original VH, but Right Now was one of the best synergies of song and video I’d ever seen. The first time I saw it, just blew me away!

Both Alex (is) and Eddie were accomplished pianists.

Wasn't Eddie's desire to play more keyboard stuff part of the reason for the breakup with Roth? DLR kept saying fans wanted Eddie wailing away on guitar not playing electronic keyboard.

I think they also legitimately started to not be able to tolerate each other as well, but yeah. I think Van Halen wanted to play more piano and synth.

Greatest guitar player, innovator and inventor of all time, can’t even count how many times his style and ideas got ripped off!!! Long live the guy who is the THE KING OF 10 FINGERS AND 6 STRINGS

The amount of amazing songs (and amazing covers of songs) that got released on 6 studio albums over a 7-year span from 1978-1984 is pretty mind-boggling, in retrospect.

Won't list them all, but easily 4+ hits/solid deep tracks on each album. Most bands are lucky to get 3-4 total over the course of an entire career.

RIP, Edward.

RIP New Haven Coliseum!

Went to the New Haven Coliseum to see Van Halen during the DLR years. Kind of drifted away from heavier metal by the time of the SH years, but always appreciated Eddie as a guitarist. I was devastated hearing Jump for the first time in late December 1983. I can recall heading up 91 for a new year’s ski trip to Vermont and not getting out of the car for lunch just I could hear the 1st airing of Jump, and hearing the keyboards was so disappointing.
You do know that Eddie played all the organ/keyboards on that tune and so many others. He wrote the music as well as 70% of all VH music.
He is so under appreciated for his music writing
I was at the May 1980 NHC show as well as an earlier one (1978?) in NYC on 14th Street
Earlier VH was the most freeform but with Sammy they didn't miss a beat (loved Montrose)

I think they also legitimately started to not be able to tolerate each other as well, but yeah. I think Van Halen wanted to play more piano and synth.
DLR was one of the supreme s in rock and roll history right up there with Glenn Frey.
It had nothing to do with Eddie playing piano other than he was preset prickly then too.
