These houses are huge and hideous. What's the deal with people in places like Florida and Vegas thinking these homes look nice? They look like dumps to me. I'd take an 1,800 square foot home in New England every day.

Different strokes for different folks. But there is a reason Rip was living in a community of multi-million dollar homes. There are plenty enough people with means who like them. And most of those people aren't living in them full time. It's just a nice crash pad when you want to settle down for a bit.
The $10-$20 million gets you a few acres, 10sq ft of home, an outdoor basketball court and direct access to the Atlantic ocean. Beats a 2500 sq ft apartment in a NYC high rise.

Perhaps built to withstand storms?

His Florida house probably comes with working electric power and his total property and income taxes are far less in Florida than yours in Ct.

We'll see if you change your tune after signing your first $100 million contract............
Money comes and goes. My life and my spending habits don't change based upon my income. Never have. All I need is sports to watch, golf to play, beaches to lay on, ponds to fish, beers to drink, food to grill, and mountains to snowboard on. I can do all of that with $50K/year or $100 million. Life is simple. No one needs a mansion.
