It wasn't a game winning shot. But it was arguably the biggest "made" shot in WBB last season, occurring in OT of a high-profile matchup between the top 2 teams in the nation. As far as the game was concerned, Paige's 3-pt shot with 10 seconds left in OT against SC gave UConn a practically insurmountable 4 point lead. But if she had missed that shot, there's no guarantee that SC would have won the game with 10 seconds left. The Gamecocks would have had to secure the rebound, probably call timeout and then execute an offensive play with less than 10 seconds on the clock.

From a team standpoint, UConn likely cemented a #1 seed in the Big Dance with the win, which put the Huskies in the bracket opposite Stanford & SC, only to run into an experienced and hot Arizona Wildcat team who ended their season in the National semifinals. Beyond that, the impact of the bounce is much more difficult to quantify, but there was and is an impact nonetheless. Every sports media outlet across the country from ESPN to the New York Times sports page prominently featured the bounce in their coverage for the next 24 hrs plus.

In real time, Lisa Byington's call during the game had an epic feel to it, "Back to Bueckers who will let it flyyyyyyyyyy........ Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho! The Magic of Paige Bueckers!" Byington's call may not be up there with Russ Hodges' call of Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard Round the World, but it is a call and a play that we will all be watching for many years to come, at least as long as Paige continues to lace up her sneakers and play basketball.

It was Page's 3rd straight 30 pt game, the first time in the illustrious history of UConn WBB that anyone had achieved that mark. Prior to the game, Page was certainly in the conversation for NFOY and AA honors. The bounce started a media narrative of Paige as a potential NPOY. Her performance the rest of the season only supported that narrative, particularly when the caveat was almost always added that, "No freshman had ever been named NPOY, " which served to elevate discussion and eventually voting for Page for every single NPOY award she was eligible to receive.

Without the bounce, does Paige subsequently receive the Espy, giving her a national platform to deliver a thought-provoking speech on the differences between how the media deals with white athletes vs black athletes? With the onset of NIL in college sports this season, how does the bounce impact Paige's ability to cash in on her huge social media following as well as her crossover appeal through conventional media? Of course, much of her ability to capitalize on her NIL depends on how she continues to play along with the success of her team. As only Geno could remind Paige, "All this doesn't matter if you stink."

One thing is for sure. Paige has already achieved something of a Rockstar status, at least as far as the UConn student body is concerned. Take a look at the video from the SRO crowd that packed the rafters at Gampel for 1st NIght on Friday.

I have watched that play entirely too many times, but it never gets old. Of course Liv was instrumental in setting up the play. Paige passed her the ball to take a shot and she more than hesitated and lost the opportunity and she passed off the hot potato to Paige and the legend grew.

One of the often overlooked aspects of Paige's skillset is her ability to move without the ball. Liv took an extra second to control the pass from Paige, which allowed Boston to close out on her. While that was going on, Paige moved back and to the right to give Liv a passing outlet, which she readily took with Boston in her face. It was a little thing with a significant impact.

This is the game. Paige scores the last 13 pts for UConn. Well deserves to watch one more time. Special the ball hit the rim then bunch back and fell into the rim.

There is one more aspect of the bounce, or more accurately what preceded it. Leading up to the SC game Paige had made a number of spectacular shots. But it was really during the two prior matchups vs SEC teams that Paige began to establish a Jordanesque quality for making big shots in big games.

On the road against AR, Paige made one big shot after another to keep the Huskies in a game they would eventually lose to the Razorbacks. Then there was the revival of the historic rivalry against the LV’s on the road in Knoxville. In a game when she didn’t play her best, after spraining her ankle, Paige came back in the game to hit the dagger that killed TN’s comeback hopes.

In a sense, the games against AR & TN were like seismic tremors that precede a major earthquake, one that was felt throughout WBB.

Paige had said many times how mad she was at herself that she did not come out more aggressively in that game. That game and her self inspection were critical to the SC game I think.

Sometimes you're the pigeon and sometimes you're the statue: it's good to be the pigeon . . .
There's an old joke about that. A sculpture of two nude lovers embracing was brought to life by a magician. The male figure looked longingly at the female and said, "Do you want to do what I want to do?" "You bet," she replied. "I'll grab a pigeon and you can...."

What's your favorite call?

"Down goes Frazier"
"Havlicek stole the ball"
"Do you believe in miracles?"
"The Giants win the pennant"
Don Larsen's perfect game
Carlton Fisk's homerun

Can you imagine what it would have been like when the "Bounce" went through the hoop... IF there were no COVID restrictions and the game was played in front of a sold out crowd as would normally be expected for a game of this magnitude at Gampel. I fear there may have been a need for repairs to the dome again!!! :D :D  ;)

Not in the strictest sense of the term, no it wasn't. But, it was, from the look and attitude of the SC players, especially Boston, with her look back at Paige, and who knew (knows) Paige very well, the straw that broke the camel's back and SC's spirit.

It was a spirit winning shot.

"The dynasty fulfills its destiny."
Just my opinion, but I think a great game winning call has to 1) involve a close game and 2) be spontaneous. The comment from Doris Burke in 2016 was at the end of UConn’s annihilation of Syracuse and she had obviously planned it ahead of time.
