Agreed. If anything, it only amplifies the possibility and gives the athletic programs conference stability in the meantime.

If that's the case, then there might not be a more apathetic fanbase in the country than Houston. 32,592 average attendance for a team that went 13-1??? Wow, that is embarrassingly low. 81% capacity on the season, and only one sellout! You didn't even sell out the Championship Game. Geez, if Houston fans won't support a team that goes to a New Year's bowl, when will they support them?!?

I guess that kind of thin support shouldn't be surprising for the 4th most popular team in the city of Houston.
 
Inviting Houston wouldn't help the Big12 very much. They wouldn't add a new TV market or a new recruiting market. In fact it would hurt current Big12 schools who recruit the Houston area by giving a local team even more credibility.
 
I don't see the Big12 expanding into New England. It's just impractical for all parties concerned when anyone in this part of the country can see just about any one of their games already. Was there an important Big12 game not televised on either the Fox, ABC, CBS or ESPN network of channels around here this year?

It doesn't make sense in some ways if there is no big 12 network. However, it is a no brainer if there is a big 12 network because they will make a lot of money from cable box subscriptions around New England and New York. Also, presidents care about the schools they are associated with and care about their ability to recruit high school students from out of state/ region to go to their schools. So it goes beyond on field results when it comes to conference affiliation.

This is probably one of the dudes who complained about Memphis committing dirty plays...then Shirreffs gets speared and Myers has his legs taken out away from the play.

You are correct, the true and hardcore fans show up regardless of opponent. Casual fans do not (unless their team is undefeated, ranked, and playing for something big). That's why Houston only had 25k show up for SMU and 29K show up fro Vandy mid-season home games, but sold out for Navy and Memphis.

Why do so many people not get this. Oklahoma wants to recruit students not football players, and they see New England as the top recruiting ground in the country for students (which it is). They want to bump their academic profile nationally. That's the pitch here. UConn brings a national brand and access to much better TV markets and a strong pipeline of kids who will be exposed to those schools. Houston does nothing for them. Nothing.

As someone who came from CT (and UConn) to Kansas University Law School, I can tell you they viewed that as a win for them. Northeastern kids readily look to Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, North Carolina, UVA etc., but don't look at Big 12 schools.

thank you for reinforcing this. The presidents of universities are making the realignment decisions and they care about marketing their school and cash-flow. Football matters because good football teams generate money and good football matchups generate exposure for the schools playing in the game.

However, there are a lot of other factors that generate money and exposure to potential students. Getting out-of-state students to come and pay out-of-state tuition is huge for the bottom line of state schools and attracting students from the wealthiest and best educated population in the country is enormously important for them.

Cable box subscriptions and exposure to lots of new eyeballs with high household incomes will lead to lots of additional cash for a conference and it's member schools.
