Replay the last few second

The funny thing about the whole “he should’ve put a hand up crowd” is their lack of understanding of the game at that level. You put a hand up when you are guarding someone in normal territory playing normal defense. Braylon was 40’ out and given how fast that play developed, no one was prepared to guard him at all. Evans wasn’t even sure who was going to shoot. Alex buzzed the ball back to Braylon and it was gone in a second. On top of that, you don’t expect him to pull up and shoot a textbook jumper from there, you expect at least a quick dribble or two to get closer. People questioning the defender are completely clueless. Braylon was the guy for the shot because he has unlimited range, a super quick release and he even had nice elevation on it. Nobody was stopping or even distracting him the way that played out.
I get what you're saying but the more I watch it the more I notice how he didn't even react to the shot. I get that it was a bang bang play, but people defend shots from that deep all the time. Even on last second attempts when they're trying not to foul. I don't want to say there was no effort but he just seemed lost in the moment. Like he was stunned by what was happening before his eyes. People aren't clueless for noticing that

Just for clarity, I just reread and I wasn’t calling you out as clueless. Totally didn’t mean to do that. Sorry. It was a very general observation of online commentary.

Watch it in real time. People keep commenting about it online while playing it in slow motion. At full speed you see a few things. Evans watches Alex as he’s running back and Alex whips the ball back to Braylon. Evans turns back toward Braylon and is on his heels a little and just as he sets his feet to get ready to guard him the ball is gone. Evans actually raises his right arm halfway (you see this better in slow motion) but it’s too late and he instinctively puts it down. It was way too fast for him to do anything at all. When guys run at someone taking a buzzer 3 they are usually running at the shooter. Evens had no time to stop, turn around and begin running forward toward Braylon with a hand up. He had just gotten his feet under him. And yes, he was lost in the moment. Everyone was.

We are now seeing it from 5000 feet. On the court this was all reactionary and lightning fast. It’s not like Evans missed his assignment and wasnt guarding his man. Nobody had a man at that point. Everyone on both sides is just trying to survive for a few seconds. This was a perfect scenario. Silas is cool as a cucumber and didn’t choke on that second free throw. He then makes the big defensive play. Braylon grabs the ball and whips a pass to Alex. Look at that pass, it is a bullet and thrown with perfect, text book technique, even in that situation. Alex is another cerebral and unflappable guy and he sees Boozer in front of him and Braylon moving forward wide open with no defender, he zips it back and Braylon catches and shoots that ball in 1 second flat.

The reason this was so great, historic and improbable is that it was all done perfectly and any variation at all to what happened would have resulted in us losing.

Hoop hound I understand what you’re saying but here’s a few things which I’m sure you already know - to take of note:
1) Braylon got it back with 2.9 secs- very minimal time to put ball on the deck and pull trigger.
2) you absolutely cannot allow a three-pointer there. Worst case , he takes two dribbles and jacks up a three from just inside the three-point line and
we go to OT. You cannot allow a three right there.
3) of all people you have to know Braelin has a quick trigger and will pull it from anywhere plus nowadays these guys shoot 30 footers like their jumpers
4) how do you not even put one hand up and position yourself to stop a slight drive ? he just stood there completely dumbfounded
5) and I get him worried about maybe fouling - but I’m not saying you have to run out there like a maniac, but at least put a hand up and hold your position. Do something.
6) and the funniest thing of all is his handle is “get your hand up” You can’t make this up man. Too funny.

What do we even call this thing? It’s more than a shot - it’s a sequence. Is it “the play” - “the sequence” “ “the blitz” - what properly encapsulates it?

I've heard it called the Boozer Beater many times. I forgot where I heard that or I'd give credit. I didn't make it up.

No. No. No. I despise Duke. We Are UCONN!!!
That's hilarious

YOU are a fraud
It's an act. I don't know why he does it but chill. We're back in the final 4.
Eh. It’s part of the mojo now. There are repercussions for actions. Especially putting that d**m Dook picture in among all the great Husky photos. He’ll always be a dookie to me.
I figured it out a little over a month or so ago - it was his own personal mojo.

It worked. Better than a hanging.

He's obviously a UConn fan and was going anti mojo on Duke to the extreme.

I am kind of in awe that he carried it on so long and so hard.

Kudos @WeAreUCONN

Man I get what you guys are saying but this was off a steal. Evans had to react and he chased the ball, which went to Alex. Everyone in the building probably figured Alex would shoot it. He’s a shooter. Alex sent the ball back to Braylon and the Duke defenders had their backs to Braylon and had to adjust. I don’t know how anyone could think in that situation Evans would say to himself, “better find Mullins”. Freaking Captain America has the ball on the wing with a few seconds left. He’s way closer to the hoop than Braylon. Who on God’s green earth would process in that millisecond, “What if this Senior, Captain, 3 point shooting, two time national champion whips that ball back to half court for the freshman to stick a textbook jumper from just past half court instead?” There was no time for that.

The Monday morning quarterbacking on this is silly. The assignment for Duke coming out of that timeout was to end the game by running out the clock not to guard Braylon Mullins from 40 feet out and be sure to get a hand up. My grandfather hated that I played basketball instead of football because he thought basketball was so easy. He wasn’t any good at it and didn’t play it, but man could he critique it.

.-.

No offense taken, but I do appreciate you clarifying. I also hadn't seen the slowmo so perhaps that would have changed my opinion on the matter a bit.

I do think some people would have instinctively gotten a hand up, even if it were too late to have an impact. I really think he just didn't expect a bomb like that to go in, especially when the team had been so bad from 3 the whole game. As we both noted, just lost in the moment.

Completely agree it was perfect execution by our guys and any slight change in how they executed likely ends our season.

Evans was about 8 feet away when Mullins received the ball. Evans could have had Olivier Rioux’s wingspan and sticking his hands up weren’t going to make any difference.
