Do you think the state could afford to keep the Rent open with the schedule were gonna have once this year is over? The ACC for all intents and purposes just put the last nail in our coffin. I love Uconn football as much as the biggest die hard. But im starting to lose hope for us. Maybe its time we scrap football and focus on basketball. There is no way the State can afford to keep the Rent open for the piss poor crowds that will come with a glorified Division 1AA conference schedule coming. Sorry for the doom and gloom but im heart broken.

Well next year we have BYU, Boise, and what should be a strong Cincinnati team at home. The following year we have Tennessee.

That's enough to entice me to get season tickets through 2015. Maybe they should close it in 2016?

Don't be absurd. The ACC action doesn't affect UConn at all.

im not a die hard because I dont wanna see Memphis? Really? Im not a die hard because were gonna play competition like CCSU plays? Definetly not a die hard having season tickets for 9 years and going to EVERY game. Sorry if I dont think it will be much fun seeing Tulane play us and the crowd will be smaller then 10K. Im a die hard and love to cheer on the team but when there is more noise at a funeral then the Rent, yeah i have a problem with that. Butch how many years have you had season tickets for?

Yeah I have actually gone to Uconn Hockey games the past 2 years. And drive 28 miles each way to see em. Not trying to get into a pissing match with you but I also go to many soccer (mens/womens) baseball and mens/womens basketball games a year. Yeah I would say im a die hard. I went to 14 out of the 16 mens soccer games. See I dont just support Uconn football and basketball teams. I support the whole university for the sports I love. Thats a die hard. All I was doing is stating a question. If we have problems drawing decent crowds to a game against Pittsburgh, then what is gonna happen on a cold and rainy Saturday against Tulane? Sold out standing room only? Scalpers outside with nosebleeds for $150 a piece? Yeah dreaming

"Glorified Div 1AA schedule" is pretty harsh, and scrapping a stadium that the state invested some 100 mil into just because the conf schedule is weakened isn't the most practical long-term solution. Why destroy everything they've worked towards building the last decade? Plus the fact is football-wise right now we're right on par competitively with a lot of these incoming AAC teams. Heck, we're probably middle of the pack.

Sure we're all bummed about how we've gotten completely railroaded in conf. realignment, but it is what it is now and we have to make the most of it. Best thing UConn can do now is take care of UConn. Keep scheduling strong OOC teams (Michigan, Tennessee, BYU, Boise), commit towards staying a national power in hoops (KO and the new training facility will help), stay as competitive as possible in football, attend the games, support the program, strive to win conference titles, bowl games, compete for national titles, and maybe, just maybe, the realignment door will open again.

Do you think the state could afford to keep the Rent open with the schedule were gonna have once this year is over? .

Next years schedule projects to be:

BYU
Boise
SMU or Houston
Cincy
UCF or ECU
Temple

Making it one of the best we have had.

You grossly underestimate the popularity of UCONN Football in this state
(We had 35K for UMASS last year).

Don't be stupid.

The ACC Doesnt affect us? Since when? Because HFD said were going to the Big10? Our best shot of going to a different conference is the ACC. the Big14 or whatever the new name is has a rule I believe that Stadium Capacity has to be 50K. Northwestern was "granfathered" In. This hope of the big whatever is a long shot. One im hoping and praying for but dont think its reality.

dude have you seen the crowds last year? 3,500 at the Spring game? Our attendance this year SUCKED. If Uconn doesnt put a good product on the field and visiting teams are weak, nope Connecticut WILL NOT show up to support our team.

35,000 was announced attendance. Anyone who went to the game will know it wasnt 35,000. Also they said Pitts game had 33,503. No where close to that. I Dont want the Rent to fail because its the most fun ANY sports fan can have on a random Saturday in Fall. I love going to Uconn games and cheering OUR team on. But with the Old Man coaching and the conference going down I think the state will be losing a ton of money. Thats all i was asking is how long do you think the state could take a loss on the stadium before the scrap it? Supposably its very hard for any School outside the BCS conferences to turn any kind of profit in sports.

This country is $15+ trillion dollars in debt. And somehow, UConn is still growing academically.

The ACC action (GOR) doesn't affect us, that's correct, nor will it affect future CR to any great degree. To come on the board and suggest scrapping football is just absurd. That would doom us permanently. In football the nACC is a disaster waiting to happen, as it has already shown. Only it will become more of a disaster and that will lead to instability. A GOR doesn't make them more competitive on the field.

I'm just not taking the gloom and doom bait that this board is full of. We have terrific leaders in place and a bright future. Just ask yourself, would you really rather be Syracuse? Not by a long shot.

I don't understand this mentality. Am I the only one who watches sports because I like the values it teaches us: to never give up, to always compete to the best of your ability, to always try to make the best of the situation, no matter what, to honor yourself by leaving it all out on the field?

I swear, for a bunch of sports fans, Boneyarders are comically good at waving white flags in the face of adversity.

If all you care about is winning, then by all means, root for the Yankees, Patriots, and Heat.

Do you think the state could afford to keep the Rent open with the schedule were gonna have once this year is over?

The State is still on the hook for the $91 Million in bonds regardless if Rentschler is in use or not. They canned Rentschler's management company in favor of an organization who know how to fill an athletic venue with events other than the 7 home dates for UConn football (Spectrum Global) and the losses incurred over the last couple years are largely (as in 88%) of the non-cash variety. So...No. Shutting down Rentschler would be a mistake.

The ACC for all intents and purposes just put the last nail in our coffin.

Not yet actually, but the time is getting close...1) The ACC has 15 full time members in all other sports. No one said they cannot add a scholl for the non-revenue generating sports. The GoR makes it hard for teams to leave, not get added. Also, their TV deal doesn't go into effect yet. 100% of zero is still zero. 2) An outright invite to the Big Ten is still a possibility.

I love Uconn football as much as the biggest die hard. But im starting to lose hope for us. Maybe its time we scrap football and focus on basketball.

Okay, Nelson. Now we know its you...First the New Big East has made no overtures which we are aware that if we ditch FBS football that they would invite UConn.

More importantly...No, I'll ask it a different way: Name the last school (and year) who was successful in winning a Basketball National Championship, whose conference did not also support FBS Football. I've written it at least 5 times in the recent past, so it won't be too tough to find...I'll wait...

There is no way the State can afford to keep the Rent open for the piss poor crowds that will come with a glorified Division 1AA conference schedule coming.

See above. It would cost more to have a vacant building than events to offset the costs.

Sorry for the doom and gloom but im heart broken.

Sell crazy somewhere else.

Those are pro teams. Winning is nice too. I like the atmoshere (most of the time) and the competition, and to see the underdog prevail at home, knowing I was in that crowd.

If all you want to see is character building, go see a Pop Warner game. Big time college football requires winning as well as those other things.

Wow, Chief. World Traveler.

Storrs is 25 miles from Hartford. Given the population density of the the State of Connecticut, there is a good chance that a majority of the crowd was required to travel 28 miles both ways for an on campus event. Now if you'd walked uphill in the snow with no shoes both ways, I'd be impressed.

It is ridiculous to even assume they would cut football or drop it back to 1AA (like some others have mentioned).

The Rent is not just open 6-7 times a year for UCONN games. So to assume because there may be lackluster crowds in 2014 and beyond that they would shut down the stadium and cut the sport is ridiculous and the statement made without any basis of possible fact. Assuming the sky falls as preduicted and UCONN only generates 25k or so a game, they can offset those possible losses with additional athletic events and other entertainment. The State is not on the hook for 100% of the cost; you have to factor in the Management company and UCONN for their events. And even at 25k fans, with what they make on food/alcohol/merchandise will offset a lot of losses assuming this revenue is distributed to all entities involved.

Its funny how most MAC teams average <20k a game and are able to remain in FBS level football with MUCH smaller athletic departments. And even compete in some years.....here crazy people are just speculating about smaller crowds in the future and proactively suggesting they shut the program down. Really!?!

How many times do we have to be rejected before people stop putting any hope into the ACC? The only conceivable way we were getting there was a realignment free for all where the B1G and SEC grabbed a few teams out of the ACC and they reloaded with UConn. With the GOR being signed thats not hapenning. Its sad really because that is obviously where the school belongs and should be, but i just don't think it will ever happen.

I have never heard of a 50k seat clause for the B1G, but I'd personally lend myself as a free laborer to start adding seats to the Rent if 10k seats was all that was holding UConn from the B1G.

As for the OP, I get it. This is an awful feeling and one way of looking at this is we are walking towards our slow and ineveitable death. I don't think he's out of line to talk about it. I don't agree with it, but it's not like things are looking great right now.

If we go 10-3 every year with a moderately interesting offense we will get 35k plus no matter who we play.

Go 5-7 every year vs AAC competition and I think we still get 29k.

Just win baby, and they will come.
