Renew UMass UConn Rivalry?

We cant play UMASS . . . .
We are still ducking them. . . . . . . .
Was kind of thinking the same thing. That was all we heard on the old yard. Speaking as a fan of basketball boards, and not as a basketball fan, I would have to nix UMass period. Let them say now that Ollie is a cheat and he's ducking us. I have heard enough from UMess fans to last a lifetime!

Any team we have any history with or is local I say we play. Why not?

If we can play a couple NYC games a season, Memphis x2, Cincy x2, a couple big name home/ homes Florida, Texas etc. and then a local like UMass, PC, BC, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John's - im all for it

Why not? We just have to drop a current weak opponent. As the conference becomes weaker next year with Louisville leaving our out of conference schedule becomes even more important. We shouldn't have room for teams like Maine and Umass would be an upgrade.

For starters playing Maine or any cupcake at home brings over a 100k in revenue to the school, and playing at UMass brings $0. Can we please stop this UMass talk now please? There are much better teams to schedule home and homes with.

Hey maybe some of these dudes will cough up the dough and it can happen. I'm not holding my breath. Some people don't have to consider finances of other entities. Nice luxury,

Providence is mildly appealing since they at least now appear to have the program off the mat under Cooley. I have no idea what incentive UConn would have to play UMass on the road - more than likely, they'd have a mediocre team, but the entire University would treat it as their Super Bowl and we'd have our hands full.

Exactly, if these posters want to donate a couple hundred thousand to the athletic department to make up for these road games at URI, UMass and PC I'm all for it! Thank God none of these guys are running our athletic department :)

I think one of them is Jeff Hathaway which explains a lot.

Attendance at the Detroit game was about 8k. Attendance at a UMass game would no doubt be over 12k. With the price of tickets an awful lot of money is being left on the table playing Detroit vs UMass. Someone at UConn is got to start thinking outside of the box in order to improve the level of competition (RPI) going forward in the AAC. Finding a way to eliminate "cupcakes" like Detroit needs to be found. I wound think TV/ radio revenues would be better if more no local interest cupcakes were reduced from the schedule.

Play them in football? No.

Play them in basketball? Yes. Still would make a good local rivalry. Other than the in-state cupcakes, the pickings are slim now.

As someone whose father had season tickets for us when I was a kid and loved Yankee conference rivalries, I would love to see that series.

With Louisville leaving the conference next year, UConn seriously needs to improve its RPI competition. Adding a home and home for UMass by dropping Maine and Detroit type teams would be worthwhile I think. Some loss of revenue by dropping a home game would be worthwhile in long run. Maybe UMass would be willing to sweeten the pot by agreeing to play the Rent w/o a return football home game. Cutting down on coast to coast home and home games like Stanford and Washington might not be a bad idea either.
We didn't schedule Detroit. That was part of the 2k Sports tournament. Not sure why I had to be a dick and point that out, I get what you're saying.

I remember probably 10-11 years ago CCSU had a string of a few good years, made a couple NCAAs, I think even had like a 19 game winning streak at point. Well we played them and people were all like "oooowwww I bet Central gives them a run for their money!" And we beat them by 20-25 pts. I do wish one of the other 6 D1 instate schools could rise to a VCU or Butler type level. That would be interesting. Wouldn't happen though.

Better league than the AAC? Who?

You can say what you want about the A-10. But once Louisville is gone the A-10 should clearly be better than the AAC. and as of now the A-10 enjoys a better conference RPI than the SEC and AAC... That league is looking to get six bids right now. With that said, their brand recognition is weak, probably a lot weaker than the AAC. I don't say none of this with a smile as I do root for Connecticut but a series with UMass would not be a bad idea in my eyes.

If an old Yankee Conference team is relevant again then it needs to happen for New England. No reason not to with the time distance between the time the Squid was there and now!
We don't owe New England basketball anything.

Wow……so we have the team that won the most while at the A-10 in Temple and also UConn, Cincy and Memphis at the top…..explain to me who they have at the top? VCU is good but who else has been really really good since Bob Lanier and Marcus Camby left their respective teams in that league?

I mean it's possible they will be better on the bottom but they only have one team who can even discuss being in the dance year after year and they are even new to that themselves so we don't know………

There's no way but "clearly better" is not accurate!

No we don't……..but it would be real nice to have a rivalry somehow someway…….not going to happen in the AAC so getting regional excitement would help of rthe fans who like some "road trips" every year!

Comparing CCSU's basketball program to the UMass program is misleading. UMass is almost three times larger than CCSU and is the flag ship school for the state. The level of play and support is clearly at a much higher level than CCSU. I doubt that UMass would fail to give UConn a good game on a regular basis.

Cons: Cloth Frog comes back. I think Yonick will agree with me on that note.
Amen, joober. He's been very quiet over the past 4-5 months. I remember him after we won our 1st NC. He was UMfan then. He's changed his handle 8-9 times after each time he was banned.
My guess is if we meet in the tourney he'll be back.

Providence would be a good addition. As travel becomes more draining PC would be a good a opponent.

Playing in Boston and NYC against local teams makes sense from so many reasons. Big interest big crowds big media big money
