Reibe in the portal

I get that it's Hurley's job to improve and out recruit the current talent.

Before the transfer portal became what it is today, teams had to develop talent and bring in top freshman

Today you can rebuild your roster overnight, but that will cost you a loss of culture

The guys that came here, came because of the UConn culture. You want guys to stick around to teach that to the next guy.

Alex forever was that guy. Now that you can earn some good money at the college level, sometimes better than NBA money, sticking around and helping to retain that culture is huge.
It's going to be difficult to maintain that culture as long as the current Portal & NIL rules are in place.

The players themselves have a lot to say about the culture. Players like Reibe and Furphy entering the portal likely won't hurt our culture much. The first of those two would likely have earned more PT this coming season, while the other would have had a tougher road to earn meaningful PT off the bench, though might have got into the rotation in years 3 and 4 depending on the level of improvement by that player and those he would be competing with for PT.

I don't think the end of the roster players jumping into the portal will impact our culture either.

If the rest of the remaining rotation players return, that will help maintain some of the culture, which is increasingly becoming difficult.

If the younger Ross enters the portal and Mullins doesn't return, our entire 2025 class will have lasted just one season. If one or both return that provides some continuity.

As long as most of the rotation players who have eligibility left who aren't entering the NBA draft continue to return each year and there are high school recruits and players in the portal who want to come here that aren't seeking the highest NIL money, with both groups knowing that working hard and improving will earn PT, our culture can be maintained. Note that winning and making Final Fours is also an ingredient to all this.

Only time will tell the impact all this has on our culture.

Feels like we’ve lost the plot here

Reibe is a really talented player. He started several games while Tarris was hurt and played a major part in big games against Arizona, Illinois, and Kansas. Led the team in scoring twice

He either fell off then checked out, or checked out then fell off

If he fell off first…well, he’s a freshman center. Happens. If he doesn’t want to be here after a rough stretch, I don’t want him here. Best of luck

If he checked out first….I don’t want him here. Best of luck

Doesn’t mean he’s not a good player. He’s a freshman, he has time to improve his strength and rebounding. He doesn’t want to do it here, fine. Best of luck
100%

Follow that up with the divergent goals that he and UConn likely had.

Reibe: I think I can be the lead 5 on the team at 25-30 minutes a night.

Hurley: we'd really like you to stay and have a place for you on our center rotation at 18-24 minutes a night if you come out and bust ....oh, and stop fouling.....oh, and learn to play D.

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when he went into Hurley's office.

That's the big mystery.

My guess is that this wasn't about competition, it was about fit. Who really knows if Hurley pushed him out or he chose to walk away.

I guess it doesn't matter, but as a fan, it kind of does.

I really thought he was going to be a big factor next year. I'm a big fan and wish him well
Something else happened. Perhaps tampering or heightened self value. How do you go from “he saved our season” to walking out?

My prediction is he ends up at Kentucky. No inside info or anything, just my WAG.

He’s being guided poorly. 50% FT shooters don’t have high upside from 3. When you’re 7 foot you should focus on the stuff that 7 footers are paid to do.
Most of the time that's true.

However, our very own Donovan Clingan (who wasn't a good foul shooter but has improved a bunch) has become a decent shooter from three.

I know the ultimate answer is money but why would anyone walk into that situation right now? That fan base is ready for Pope's head. Seems like it is setting up to be an off-the-charts level toxic season for everyone involved. I hope Reibe picks a better destination.

It's my understanding that family doesn't believe Eric a) got enough playing time and b) his skill set was properly utilized.

I think Reibe could have been very successful here and would've been well positioned for a successful NBA career. He just had to give it time, trust the system and develop. Apparently that wasn't something that they were willing to do. I wish him the best.

I can't help thinking back about Clingan and his outside shooting. He was already developed as an inside presence, much more than Reibe was and the reason why he didn't shoot more from the outside was that he wanted to win. The team needed him more on the outside as a passer, screener and facilitator.

There's a video of this somewhere.

Billups and Cronin both said Clingan surprised them with his shooting ability during the individual workout they had with him. It was a surprise since Clingan only attempted eight 3-pointers over his two years with UConn. As for why Clingan only took eight deep balls, the reason is what helped sell Clingan to Billups. “He gave me one of the best answers a kid gave me,” Billups said. “I asked him when I was interviewing him, ‘If you’re such a great shooter why didn’t you shoot more?’ He said, ‘I just wanted to do what coach needed me to do to win.’ To me, that’s just a winner.”

He also was fouling at such a high rate, he could not stay on the floor. Was it the system, lack of caring, or inability to process the game flow?
Had to be attitude based on how well he played overall when filling in for TR against opponents we thought were the toughest on the schedule.

His body language was soft and he seemed like he didn't want to be there later in the season.

Maybe he needs to be "the guy" in his mind and doesn't do well when he's challenged. But if that was the case how did he make it through practices?

There are many factors when someone decides to transfer. It is possible some of them aren’t basketball related. Maybe he doesn’t like the school or the area or Dairy Barn doesn’t have his favorite flavor. We can speculate but probably will never know.

You're not far off. I have it on good authority that its because the dairy bar doesnt use German chocolate in their Rocky Road and this was the breaking point for him.

I think HE was, I don't think the circus around him that Hurley mentioned more than once - were not.

I think that anytime you can get a 7 footer with some polish on his game, you have to take a chance. He likely will wind up being a very good outside shooter for a big somewhere else. I do not think that as the season went along it looked as though he was going to be able to give us what we needed. We needed another big who could alter shots in the lane and rebound. I never felt that he ran the floor particularly well. When you see big bodies like Sanogo and Reed learn what they needed to learn to be bona fide physical big man, you do see what a powerful big kid can learn at UCONN. The work that they were able to put in with this coaching staff to become legit game changers should speak very highly to any big strong kid who truly wants to take their game to the next level. Their footwork development alone was awesome. I hope Reibe gets the chance to enter a program that will work for him.

seems like he has people in his camp that are 1. too high on his current capability, 2. want him to carry more offensive load and showcase his skill level.

this is kind of a misevaluation of where the bigs game is going. being a defensive stopper and having a great post game with passing is a lot more valuable now than the old 'unicorn' archetype of being a big perimeter player with face up game.

I think he will go somewhere like Maryland where he is guaranteed to start and play lots of minutes.

a) Then he and his camp were delusional if they thought he would get more playing time as Reed's backup. He's actually lucky he got as much as her did overall due to Reed injury. He ended up with almost as many minutes as Clingan behind Sanogo for godsakes

b) Maybe, but the offense was never going to revolve around him and his skillset. He should have used the opportunity to develop new skills and make himself more well rounded rather than sulk about it.

Tarris finished the year a top 3 Center in the country (Only behind Ejifor & Mara). You could argue he was playing the best.

Let him go somewhere where he can face up.

Perhaps, but that doesn't change their perceptions.
