Reibe in the portal

We need to pump the brakes a bit on these assessments, since kids develop over time. and they look like completely different players. Reibe actually has a bigger frame than some of the bigs who became physical forces for UConn in the last 30 years. Yes, I'm going way back, but Travis Knight, Jake Voskuhl, Hilton Armstrong, Josh Boone, Thabeet, heck even Gavin Edwards, they all came in and were not physical the way you want our centers to be.

Some took to their senior year to be serviceable (Nolan & Samson). Others we gave up hope on only to see them explode (Armstrong).

Very few plateaued early or didn't get much stronger (Brimah).

Sanogo and Clingan dominated in the 3rd and 2nd years respectively.

Reed transformed in the second half of this year.

That position needs patience and development. If he wanted to, Reibe could put on a lot of weight and muscle and hold down the fort. All it would take was a mean streak and some work.
I do not disagree. I spoke about his prospects for NEXT year. It was a narrow take.

Confirm what notion?

Reibe played great for a freshman big when Tarris was hurt and slow to get back into form with his injury.

When his minutes became more up and down and Tarris got healthier/better that became a problem for him and he was checked out later in the season.
Checked out later in the season. That’s the part that hurts. If that’s the case then he hurt the team by not trying. Poor teammate if that’s the case. He’s got talent but…

He is a good player and he could be something really special in year 3 or 4. I’d like to keep him.

He should not have been stealing minutes from Tarris though. Tarris has great talent and finally lived up to it in the postseason. If things were called properly and we hit 2 more 3’s, Tarris wins a natty and gets MOP.

I saw that Kentucky is pursuing Reibe along with Indiana, amd BYU.

.-.
Will be interesting to see what kind of money he signs for. Chase the NIL money, YOLO.

So all the big money spender programs and not the ones that he’d have to move down a level to play more? Because he’s a super talented kid.

.-.
Maybe he’ll go to Washington or Northeastern so he can still be a foxtrottin’ husky.

Seriously though, I’m bummed he’s leaving and I’ll still root for his success because he made a major contribution to our season’s success (just because it was front-loaded doesn’t make it any less true). I think he’s gonna be nasty wherever he ends up.

The only thing I will say is that Reibe is never going to put up star numbers in this system. Heck, Castle didn't put up star numbers here - his pro numbers are better. That's the system. Reibe would have had the starting job next year but he would have been a third-fourth option scoring. Obviously this is not what he wanted.

Also, this was not a surprise to the staff.
Reibe got essentially the same time as Clingan did his first year. He was slightly less productive with it. He should've stayed the course. Next year would've been a dramatically better year for him. But we now live in a world of immediate gratification.

.-.
Reibe shot 4/13 from 3 and under 60 from the free throw line. He showed zero ability to stretch the floor here and was a total liability defensively. He played the exact amount that he should have . He absolutely has lots of potential and he’s choosing to leave the place that could have cultivated it the best, imo. We’ve been exceedingly fortunate that we really haven’t lost major pieces, until now, in the portal era.
I agree, the most logical and beneficial use of shooting practice time would be on improving his foul shot and post moves that draw fouls.

I take issue with one thing you said, "we hit 2 more 3's, Tarris wins, etc". That was what I was hoping for but we didn't even need to do that.
If all the fouls were called honestly and consistently, M makes probably 6 fewer free throws and we take and make at least 6 more and win handily. That's what's most galling and has caused my wife to tell me at least a dozen times nothing will change the outcome...........hate it when she's right..............

His parents must have big egos that their boy needs to feed if they think he deserved more playing time in the face of what Tarris did towards the end of the regular season and then in the NCAA.

That’s too bad, I really like it when guys stay and develop and earn their role.

Oh well, There’s been some rumors linking us to Najai Hines, I like him better than Reibe do if we secure him, I won’t mind this move at all.

What kind of character does a kid have when his play falls off a cliff when it matters most?
That is not right, don't judge his character because his play fell off. You don't always have to have the extreme take.

this is same guy who said 100 guys couldve done what AK did

this board is funny. a supermodel would break up with you, and you would say you grew tired of her looks. How we are now calling him a crybaby teammate who quit on his team, who needs to step down a level to shine??? That we didnt want him to stay or offered him big NIL? He will thrive wherever he goes, as 7-1 skilled big ones do, and this board will continue to show that most dont really know ball.

I think his fit was always meant to be different then Adama, Donavon, Tarris.

Hurley said last year that he wanted to have more improvisation in his offense. Reibe’s potential as a pick and roll and a pick and pop demonstrated that. Pairing him with a more traditional 4 when AK left this year was probably in their vision as well.

I don’t think Reibe’s camp believed in the same vision. I’m sure they were told that there would be more utilization this year, but that he needs to improve his interior play. They didn’t like that. Plus tampering.

Im sure Smith questioned why he came here during the year when he had games where he played 5 minutes in his senior year. Or maybe he didn't.

Nonetheless when the stage was the biggest in the tournament he was ready, and he played as best as he could have.

I held off on posting about Reibe leaving, but it feels more about money than playing time or fit. If BYU, Indiana, and Kentucky are really in it among others, I’m not sure how that works out for him. He could’ve stayed at UConn, worked out a deal, and had a year under his belt. Not wishing anything bad on him, but this one could come back on him. If he is focused he can be a force.

For sure. The issue was that he couldn't defend the rim, was a subpar rebounder, and ultimately couldn't play two minutes without getting into foul trouble. Plus he was physically overwhelmed against good opponents.

Offensively he would have opened up a lot of other things in due time, and I think he'll turn into a very nice offensive player in college, but it's tough to play, let alone start, in this program if you're a big who can't defend or rebound.

Yeah, I don’t believe for a second that we couldn’t have utilized his skillset well offensively. I think wherever he goes, someone is getting a strong offensive player. The question is defense and IMO that’s why we couldn’t go in with him without at least having a strong center to split minutes with. If his defense and strength don’t improve a lot, he’s just not startable.
