Reibe in the portal

He had some really nice games early, then tapered off drastically towards the end of the year. Some of the fouling he was doing was borderline lazy, like he didn't care. The kid was averaging a foul a minute at times.
This was very much the impression I got. Very often it seemed like he just wanted to foul quickly so he could go sit back down...it took effort to foul that much.

Sucks because when he was engaged he was solid and looked very much like he'd eventually be a heckuva player for us. O well, best of luck, let's go find another

There is no chance we get “two quality bigs” have you read what one is going for?
One quality big and one 6'9" C/F who can shoot and rebound and defend (or 2 out of the 3) would help and might be attainable. Or, a Dejuan Blair type for one of them.
The midwest or Big 10 has a lot of those bruiser farmboy types if they want to come East. Michigan State had a couple of them. One would be fine to complement a center.

Nowell, McNeeley, Abraham, Reibe.

We await Mullins and Furphy. Once the Fab 5 runs their course, Hurley is going to have nothing to carryover. It's going to be the incoming freshmen and whatever transfers he bring in this year. The whole look and feel we've had with these longer terms kids is officially gone.
Define "officially."

How do we define mercenaries? Anyone who signs through the portal?
Rosters are built differently. 5 of our 8 top players came in organically through our system. For our last title, it was also 5/8. For Michigan and St. John’s, I believe it’s been zero.

Hurley obviously places emphasis on building a culture and development. It’s probably going to have to change at least somewhat going forward unfortunately. I also don’t think we pay anywhere close for our roster as St. John’s does, I don’t care what the reporting supposedly says.

When a guy’s “people” are saying in mid-season he should be playing more, of course he is going. This is the least surprising decision I can imagine.
Its surprising that now that Reed is not there he chooses not to continue . When he committed he knew Reed would.be there . Now that the road is clear, he wants out.

.-.
I don't think there is a next shoe to drop and this really wasn't surprising.

We should have great continuity with the guards and small forwards but we have to replace our power forward and two centers with major impact players. Well, the backup center at least has to be good enough for 12 minutes per game.

College basketball is now really stupid and crazy expensive, glad it's not my money.

First shoe to drop - an all portal NC. NIL dollars hitting 5mm. It’s professional money.

It is getting really stupid. By next year there will be 10 teams buying the 5 best players and winning it, all 5 will be either first or second year players in that program. If it stands as is the top ten NIL programs will be basically the top ten teams every year. Money and winning will be directly correlative and all sense of parity will be gone.

Coach Calhoun made a comment during one of our games that he talked to Dan about giving his young big more minutes.

Someone should read this post to Justin Brown and get his reaction on video.
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Klaiber had a minute in the 1999 championship? Not sure if Justin can say the same.

A 6’9 guy who can guard multiple positions and shoot threes is going to cost a bunch.

I don’t think “Midwestern Farmboys” is the answer if we want to continue to be good

This is also a surprising to me. He knew he was playing behind a senior starter. He's the only legit C on the roster and primed for bigger minutes next season possibly starting. I am very disappointed in this one but I wish him the best. He flashed some really nice offensive moves as a freshman and I think he is going to be a nice offensive center for somebody.

All of your starters and most of the roster are purchased from the portal store and none recruited as freshman college players. Mercenaries.
We still don’t fit that mold, just look at our roster.

Hurley said on the DP show that UConn was at a crossroads of sorts and either they need to keep retaining players or go the way of the portal. Maybe he looked at that Michigan game and this is a sign of what to come. Who knows? But w P4 teams w huge nil budgets basically reconstructing teams each year, maybe they decided to alter their philosophy. I am sure Riebe’s decision was mutual for whatever reasons.

This place is unbelievable.

There are quite a few posters here that can use a massive dose of reality.

I'd love to be able to send them through a 'Ghosts of Christmas Past' type of thing. Make them endure three seasons (1979-1980) where they had the talent to be a top 20 team each year, but never made the dance and got picked off by the likes of St Peter's in the NIT. Then had five years of sub .500 seasons, each a little worst than the last. All the time hearing so called experts claim "We can never compete with to programs" and "We should drop down a couple levels to where we belong".

Why can't we wait and see who we add before we cry about who we've lost?

Why can't we appreciate as good of a four year run as anyone has had in decades, and look forward to what happens next?

Why can't we be happy that we are fans of a ridiculously successful program?

Based on what we currently have in the roster he’s already chose a road.

Waste of everyone's time? He played in every single game this year for a team that went to the national championship game and started a few while Reed was out. He served his purpose this year. If he was a one year back up -- well, so were Lansah Kromah and Joey California.
you mentioned guys who came in as transfers. Hurley/staff and those players knew it was a 1 year deal.

The amount of resources, time and effort they made to get Reibe to commit hoping he's a cornerstone player for the program for him to bolt is insane. So yeah it was a waste of the staffs time and Reibe's if he was going to leave for a lesser program. Same for Nowell, Abraham, Diggins. Might as well just start at the school where you can play like VCU or Gtown if your going to leave after a year.

.-.
I figure they'd pair him with a rim protector who defends and rebounds. Best of both worlds sharing time and the better of them starting and getting a few more minutes than the other. I hope this means UConn is about to sign a huge get at center cause now we need at least two.

Sorry to burst your bubble but UConn's team next year won't be all new players and we will challenge for the title again.

Limited supply, high demand - and I don’t think the staff was expecting to have to go for a starting 5. I wouldn’t be that relaxed by it.
Dauster doesn't know what he's talking about, that's speculation on his part. The signs were all over the place with Reibe.

Looking a little further out than the upcoming season. Following we’ll have max guys in system a year.

So the strategy of bringing in a roster of starters via the portal is the definition of mercenary, not necessarily the players themselves?

.-.
Lolz, whatever you say.

Who are they rolling into 2027 with more than a year in the system? Landrew? County? Furphy? Good chance 1-2 of them won’t be there. Whatever non senior transfer we bring in and comes back? Not sure what so hysterical.

Well… Kentucky reportedly spent over 22 million last year, by far the highest reported and they just lost 14 games this past year.

Thank you. This theory that everything we do has to be changed immediately because we’ve gone two seasons without back to back national championships, only finished sixth in the country this regular season and it’s been a whole 100 hours since we failed to win a national championship that we had a chance to win until 30 seconds was left is so irrational and childish ….

Players and agents are all allergic to Pope for some reason. He’s not long.
