I found him to be a miss of a recruit from the start. Lot's of chatter early around him having a nice jump shot - not sure that is ever priority for any 5, nevermind a Uconn 5. Maybe he wants to go somewhere he can play more of a stretch role.

He had some really nice games early, then tapered off drastically towards the end of the year. Some of the fouling he was doing was borderline lazy, like he didn't care. The kid was averaging a foul a minute at times.

Best of luck - let's hope we land someone really good, it's a vital position. If we now have to go into next year a new big and PG, that is a tough place to start.

I agree with the “it looked like he didn’t care” down the stretch. Might have cost us the 1 seed and the natty.

I'm actually not surprised. His body language seemed different after Reid was getting into top form and Reibe wasnt getting into the rotation as much.

I think it's more system fit. I'm leaning towards of how UConn utilizes their centers from Sanogo to Clingan to Taris and I didn't think Coach Hurley was willing to change that philosophy especially with Luke leaving.

I'd like to know after all said done how many kids who enter the portal just to test the waters end up going back to their original school. He might just be seeing if there's more money in a guarantee or more playing time somewhere else if he's leaving, I'm hoping he's going to BC.

For 2022 through 2024, the NCAA portal research shows an average of roughly 70% transfer rate, 6% return rate and 24% limbo rate they call "Active", meaning still looking, un-enrolled or likely transfered out of Division 1 into a lower level.

In the championship game he looked like the only kid on the floor who didn't belong there. Very slow, very hesitant, and really looked like that for a while. Everyone develops differently, but lately he hasn't really looked like someone to count on as a "sure thing".

Which is ironic, as his parents felt he should’ve played more in the second half of that game.

Yep he had good games against Arizona, Florida, Kansas, 1st Illinois game, and Providence OT game. He has good hands and finished well around the rim. Probably a good 3pt shooter if given the chance.

I'm not sure if he didn't want to compete for minutes, if he was just frustrated with his role this year, both or something else entirely.

But if he is worried about being recruited over then fine, leave. We're going to bring in a talented big man, we always have since we brought in Clingan with Adama. None of the other guys were scared of the competition, if he is he doesn't have the mental makeup I want in one of our bigs. He seemed soft and intimidated at times this year, especially at points in the tourney. Not trying to bash him that's just my honest assessment from afar.

What's also strange about the minutes thing is that he often came close to fouling out in 10 minutes.

Minutes should be the least of his concerns at this stage in his development.

I don’t think it actually tells us anything. You don’t know this to be true, this is an assumption.

Another unproven assumption would be that he’s leaving because he became enamored of the possibility of a bigger payday from another school, seeing the numbers bigs are offered.

My guess is the Family/advisors around Eric saw NIL projections for Bigs next year. Their view of his value vs Dan's was not aligned. Eric has potential -but he is not Dirk Nowitski. Temporary bump in the road for UConn but we have a blank canvas to re-configure our 5 spot. Tons of talent looking for a home.

His transfer may have little to do with Hurley or playing time. It may have everything with getting mugged every night in the Big East. Who wants a forty minute wrestling match when he can go to a nicer climate and play in a league where he can develop his skills unmolested. Reibe is a very good player and a tremendous loss. Maybe, he did not like the high hedge? Frankly, I wonder why anyone who has options would chose to be beaten up while playing hoops. Reibe's game is finesse not wrestling.

He was somewhat useful this season but a McD AA Center usually isn’t giving you his best output frosh year. We recruited him to be our center going forward, not to give us 5-8 minutes of foul time.

We recruit and help develop and then they leave unless they’re super studs, so I get being frustrated and thinking only recruiting 5* impact starters makes sense.

College basketball is no longer what it was. We bring in players for one year for a fixed amount of money, and then they become free agents to go wherever they want and their former school can offer them more or less. If a player worth $750k leaves, you’ve saved that money and now spent it on a replacement.

My point (beyond that he contributed to an outstanding season this year) is we paid him an amount for this year that we agreed upon and if he came back next year he’d get what the market thinks is the right price for him next year. If we don’t retain him we get someone else. That’s the new reality.

Then Dan recruited the wrong profile. Hit rate at the HS level lately hasn't been great. MrDownunder has some valid points.

Another reason we want out of this league - honestly, there is nothing novel about having a level of refereeing that is disimilar to how they do it out of the conference. Another Val thing that she hasn't gotten up to speed on. Kids these days prefer a flowing style, not rugby. Will be another reason the league loses recruits - kids want to showcase their offense, not get held, shoved. It's not like it translates out of league, so what is the point, .

I don't disagree with any of that - but I also don't know how it negates what he or I said. Recruiting a 5 star C who the staff wanted to be a multi-year guy and have him not play much and then transfer after 1 year IS frustrating.

If we wanted a backup to give a few minutes, I guarantee we could have found a different non-freshman to serve that purpose, and probably do it better. A big part of being OK with Reibe's up and down season is the development path. Just being Reed's backup, we could have gotten more from a vet.

Now that he's transferring, and we're seeing these guys transfer each season, it starts to feel like a waste.

I don't think there is a next shoe to drop and this really wasn't surprising.

We should have great continuity with the guards and small forwards but we have to replace our power forward and two centers with major impact players. Well, the backup center at least has to be good enough for 12 minutes per game.
