US in a tough one vs Canada, noticing some warts with Dybantsa. US went on a run with him on the bench to retake the lead, soon as he comes in he's gambling all over on defense leaving them at a disadvantage, getting ripped trying to drive leading to an easy bucket for Canada, trying to fly in for an impossible putback dunk that leads to another Canada fastbreak. Both him and Stokes gotta play way more disciplined.
 
Saw most of 2nd half on my phone. Reibe had a good bucket on strong inside finishing move and Furphy a mix of a made 3 and drive and a few missed drives/three's as AUS' frantic comeback fell short. Would say that both looked solid not spectacular competing in high level game. If had to blindly speculate, would pencil in for low-teens scoring from each. But obviously super limited sample size and it took me 5 minutes to figure out who was who because I was viewing on phone & watching Wimbledon on TV at same time.

Definitely room for improvement. Foul trouble has been an issue. I do wonder if it has anything to do with playing with steinbach. He’s been awesome.

At the same time agree on his offense. Lot of great traits on that end

Yes... If anything happens to Reed, this UConn team, as currently constructed, is going to have a really hard time rebounding the ball against bigger opponents. I am really shocked that Hurley hasn't grabbed a bigger, bench 5 who can at least defend and rebound; if nothing else, for practice and injury insurance. It's really this team's biggest weakness on paper and it's almost malpractice if he doesn't.

Siulepa is a heck of an athlete and is apparently a phenomenal rugby player but he has zero feel for the game. Pure wrecking ball player. His play works against less composed players but Germany may have the best non-American PF in the tournament. That and Germany putting their best defender on Furphy really killed Australia until Fennel started to become a third scorer for them which opened up some offense for Furphy. Anderson killed for Germany in his matchup with Australia's PGs.

I counted Siulepa passes yesterday. Not assists... passes.

In the first half he had TWO pass to a teammate <40 feet from the hoop. TWO.

Sadly he was still Australia's second best player during the entirety of the tournament.
 
Reibe is really impressing me with his passing/ball movement. A nice interior pass to Steinbach that was mishandled, and he just hit a cutter for a dunk. Even his generic ball movement is crisp and decisive. He's going to look good in our offense.

Reibe with 13 points 5 rebounds in the semifinal win versus Slovenia. Germany advances to the championship game tomorrow against USA or New Zealand. USA heavy favorites.

Should be an interesting match up.
 
Overall, I definitely came away with positive impressions and am thinking these guys can make an impact in year 1.

Furphy: Clear gamer, high IQ, knows how to get a bucket in a variety of ways...he'll play. Pretty solid in the paint. Historically a very good shooter. Needs to continue to get quicker and limit TOs.

Reibe: Really nice offensive arsenal, comfortable on the perimeter, good passer for a big, growing as a shooter and will be a weapon soon from range. Needs to toughen up, learn help defense, rebound better.
 
Furphy had a quiet game for him in a win vs Israel today.

11/2/0... 3 TOs, 2 STLs. 5/7 from 2, 0/4 from 3.

Plays Canada tomorrow.
 
FIBA refs ALWAYS call that long step and dribble when driving to the opposite side as your pivot foot (usually your strong hand). I'm not even sure what it's called. I've heard kids in Europe are trained to use a negative step instead of the step forward because of it.
 
Looks like the US is gonna end this one before the half, US vs Germany should be a good final, the two most talented rosters by far in the tourney
