Refs

See Shake Smart quote the refs are consistently bad and he said it in a way that makes it very hard to discipline him but when I heard that I realized it was a genius comment. We played badly last night but still had a chance to win then two consecutive benefit of the doubt calls go against us. The league sees they were both bad calls at critical times yet we never hear of any accountability.

I would say you are naive to think there is not a bias on how are games get officiated. But Smart’s quite sums it up perfectly our fouls get called the other teams fouls don’t.

And can you remember one time this year where a clearly bad judgement call is made it apparent the refs then confer and the call is over turned in our favor. It has happened to us at least a handful of times this year….we get no benefit of the doubt. Those two missed calls could not have been at a more game impacting moment no matter how badly we played if the refs got both of those calls right we might win the game.
He said the team that gets less fouls called will probably win. They would have gotten rolled no matter what the refs. But yes BE refs do let things go, so build teams to take advantage of it.

Especially when you consider that they let Kalkenbrenner body up on every player that comes into the lane,,, Yes hand are up but he’s doing exactly what they are calling on Alex EVERY Defensive play, no whistle.

Solo Ball has one v Villanova, maybe 2 plays, beautiful block / clean excellent Defense abut somehow called for a foul.

There’s not accountability for these refs… None…
If you are on this rant, you forgot to mention Kalkbrenner's moving screens. He does it constantly. Remember last year when Ashworth flopped in that game in Omaha which got a moving screen called on Clingan for his 2nd foul? Creighton played well and earned that victory. That game changed immediately when Clingan had to go to the bench.

My recollection was that it was more than that he went further than that I am fairly certain. I will look for the interview to see if it is available. I am certain you could find it easier than I as you seem to have significant ability in finding things online social media or otherwise than most who post here.

He said whichever team commits the most fouls that are not called will win the game.

Basically, he acknowledged both teams will be fouling and some will get called and others will not there just can’t be a large disparity.

I agree they lose but the point is that there is way more fouling happening than is getting called. Sure let the kids play but be consistent it’s like the NFL they can call holding on every play if they wanted to.

Back to back wrong OB calls. Whether they would have changed the results much who knows. You’re supposed to play well enough to not let the refs impact a game. I’d say the awful defense and disjointed offense and a coach who doesn’t know how to develop an uber talented 5 into the core of his team are the bigger issues.
I assume that you are referring to Reed, Jr?

Yeah thanks for indulging me :) as it just ain’t right…

Like when the Creighton player flopped when Alex guarded him on the 3 point line. Okay that’s a foul,,,,, but when Kalk makes heavy contact on every player that comes into the lane is somehow not a foul?

Or when throws these moving screens all game long, that’s okay too?

It’s hard to full comprehend the inequity in how they called the game.… People say ignore it, I get it. But it so pervasive that we may want to simply look for another league to play in. That is a reasonable thing to consider. It’s a bit like you‘ve figured out that your not welcome, yes, it’s time to pack it up and move on.

For real, Football is looking better and better and I think it’s time for us to split.

"they do the best job of striking the balance of playing with violence without fouling, or without the foul being called, I should say, cuz that's not always the same"

I am not sure if this is what people are referencing, but it is pretty clear, the idea is to foul without having it called.

Why hasn’t anyone done an expose on the massive conspiracy by all refs, across the country, against UConn?
Because the brainy-acs are still trying to figure out how UConn lost 5 of 6 games in Big East play, in January 2023, and then went on to steamroll their way to the championship.

Yup. There were three drives at the end of the game, two by McNeeley, one by Karaban that all could have been called (and would have if it were Johnson or Reed)
You’re the anti-Komani guy?

The ref complaining is perhaps the biggest waste of mental bandwidth as a sports fan. It’s unfortunate so many tribal chuckleheads get pulled into it and clog the white space.

If the refs are working for you, then revise your strategy. They’re a constant part of the game.
I would say worrying what other fanbases think about UConn is an even bigger waste.

I spend much less time on that then the chuckleheads here spew wasted exhaust on the refs. I feel like I’m driving behind a car load of nerds with a broken muffler.

This board needs to get over the “referee” conspiracy. We let a team shoot 75% against us over an entire half. Process that for a moment. Teams don’t shoot that well in warm ups

We are atrocious defensively. We’ve been atrocious defensively all year. There is NO referee conspiracy against us. The conference does not hate us. In fact, we’ve probably been the best thing for it since we left.

Refs miss calls both ways EVERY GAME. Get over it. We laid a BIG FAT EGG tonight. That’s on the coaches and players and no one eise.

No wonder everyone hates us.
Everyone hates us because we have two rings in the last two years.

So he knew with Sanogo and Clingan but not with Reed. Sure.

It's true that UConn fouls a lot. Other than McNeeley and Karaban, it's also true the there is not a ton of driving to the rim.
So this is a question for a data person. For the season, what are each Big East team's aggregate free throws attempted versus the opponents fta?
I don't ask this as a conspiracy theorist, but it is a real competitive factor.

BE refs are very good at their job, don't ever question them.
Which world do u live in? As a season ticket holder, when i see who is reffing the games, i can predict the calls. Those refs work almost a game a bight during the season. It’s not unusual to see the same ones on TV over and over. The Big East should just fire them and start over or begin publicly shaming them on obvious bad [I didn’t say missed]] calls

That dunk definitely makes the Creighton program look bad.

McDermott was talking postgame how “tough” they were physically, rubbing the W in…

Maybe Danny shouldn’t have done the whole 2 ring thing on his way out of Creighton…. Maybe…

But Creighton’s Brand took a dip last night. Not a good look…
Agreed, I'm not saying that McDermott is ok with that dunk but he certainly didn't look too dissapointed, seemed like he was more so trying to save face in the public eye.

If that's a UConn player under Hurley, Calhoun, Geno etc they are reading that player the riot act, it certainly doesn't happen with a senior. It's also very stupid risking injury when the game is already over.

Karaban had more fouls called on him in the first 3.5 min of the second half than Creighton had called on them for the entire game to the that point. Those two out of bounds calls were momentum killers.

I have never in my life seen a shot blocking center have so few fouls called as Kalk. We’ve had some of the best shot blockers in college basketball history and foul trouble was always a concern. kalk goes on multiple game stretches with zero fouls.
Fun fact:

Kalk, the 4X BEDPOY (only ever matched by Ewing) has NEVER fouled out of a game. NEVER! 160 games, leading shot blocker, and probably one the most heavily utilized (minutes) players. Hard to fathom.

The closest he has come to fouling out was that game in Gampel in 2023 when Sanogo destroyed him with the 26 pts

You lost me at your first paragraph. UConn didn't let some team shoot 75% because like you said, teams don't shoot 75% in warm-ups. Sometimes Lady Luck is a complete bitch to your team.

You know what the solution to your complex problem is? Play better basketball. If we’re don’t get down 17, and don’t let the other guys shoot 75% maybe the refs don’t matter. And there were a few calls not made on us that helped us get back. 1 I remember was Kalkbrenner getting absolutely mugged under the basket by 2 defenders. His shot went about 2 feet up because someone, I think Stewart, was hanging off his shooting hand. Missed the shot, we rebounded and scored.

Just accept that we played poorly for 25 minutes. Dug a huge hole we couldn’t get out of and lost a game we probably should have won. The refs didn’t miss 2 3 pointers that would have tied the game. The refs didn’t let Creighton grab a critical rebound after a miss. The refs didn’t fail to cover guys all night long.
It was a one possession game when the ref blew the out of bounds call. So which team played worse to that point such that the game was that close? Had the ref not blown the call it very may well have been tied. They dug a hole and dug out of the hole, and then the refs pushed them back in and shoveled dirt on them.

Dude has played 5 full seasons. 166 games. Averages just 1.6 fouls per game. It makes no sense. We'll see how good coach McD is when this apparently ballerina-like-graceful 7 footer leaves the program.

Danny called out the refs a bit in the presser suggesting the UConn style fares better with Tourney refs. I guess that doesn’t solve for the fact we are in the BE for the foreseeable future and now have Pitino putting together teams that look like the Mike Tyson of the BE.

Gonna be interesting to see what Danny does in the portal.
Big East refs have never been kind to Uconn. Based on what I’ve seen, ncaa tourney refs are much more even keeled and dare I say fairer, and may be partly responsible for UConn’s better success in the ncaa tourney. I’m betting Hurley takes them to the FF again. I also think you will see St John’s especially, struggle with foul trouble during the ncaa’s.

Shaka Smart had the best quote I have heard about BE officiating during his in game interview during their “quarterfinal’ (Gus Johnson’s fault I meant semifinal) game against St Johns I quote:

“ whichever team commits the most fouls that are not called will win the game”

Two things about this quote, it is absolutely spot on and at least he is in a position to hope that team is/was going to be Marquette.

For UConn we already know the answer, UConn’s opponent will always commit more fouls that are not called. Sure as a mid summer afternoon thunderstorm in Florida. It is what it is.

Smart is a smart man…..pun intended.
……75% of those uncalled fouls are committed defending whichever UConn player has the ball. It kills me how the refs call touch ticky tack fouls when UConn is on defense while when UConn’s opponents are on defense it’s a rugby match.

This is it. All year we have had to fight ourselves, as well as fight the whistle. The whistle creates a negative feedback loop on our softer than usual mentality. Our body language after bad calls is pretty obvious, and likewise on no calls.

We just don't have the mental fortitude or the room for error that we've had in the past. We start every game -4 or 5 from the free throw line. If that changes in the NCAAT we have some hope of doing damage.

Creighton was 13 for 18 from the foul line.
While we were 2 for 4 from the foul line.

Two points from the foul line in a game we lost by 9 (including the bull spit dunk). At some point you have to be aware that something is out of whack.
It’s been the same all season.

If the big east doesn’t want us in the conference, that’s fine.

We can take a hint.

Let Mora do his thing, work together with him, find a new place to call home.

I suspect we are being punished for flirting with the B12. Instead, what this conference should be focused on is ratcheting up the SJU/UConn rivalry. That's national headlines and eyeballs in the biggest market. Instead they are throwing banana peels at us.

Maybe the method to their madness is it makes us less desireable, so that we stay stuck here? Most likely it's just garbage leadership.

The incorrect call and then the subsequent three was a dagger.

I feel like there are reviews for everything these days. Why weren’t this and the previous questionable out of bounds play reviewable?
They should allow coaches challenges like they do in professional sports. Would solve a lot of this.
