Red Sox 2021 Thread

Sale wasn't working back from Tommy John surgery 5 years ago. He only has two pitches right now, but will need to find that little something extra if this thing goes to game 5.

But as I said, it's all gravy right now.

I’d be tempted to start him today since Cora said he wouldn’t use sale out of the pen.

With the day off tomorrow you can roll with houck pivetta and a day off rested pen in game 5 if needed.

I think E-Rod gives you the better chance to win and avoid Game 5 all together.

If he is willing to throw strikes, maybe. E-Rod pitched scared. The reality is that lefthanded pitchers face Tampa's better lineup. I think they need to see if Sale can fix the mechanical issues he had the other night. But Tampa is using all relievers today as well, neither team has much left.

Game 5, if needed, should be Houck.

E-Rod is so Jekyll and Hyde it wouldn’t shock me if he goes out and throws a gem today. I would save Houck and Sale for game 5 unless there is a kill shot moment in today’s game where you need them.
Tampa is the master of bullpen games so even though they used a ton of arms yesterday I don’t think they will be fazed…although I’d assume Robertson is unavailable

E-Rod's constant nibbling and inability to be aggressive drives me crazy. Even if he threw a "gem", the likelihood is he's done after 5 innings and we'll have to hit the bullpen for another 4. I have 0 faith in him tonight. I hope he makes me eat my comments.

This gravy's got legs!!

I think I said this before but this team reminds me so much of 2013. That year the Sox were underdogs against each team they played and yet the won relatively easily. One big difference is that they had Koji and this team doesn't. Could Whitlock be our Koji?

I love the fact that we have hardly used Whitlock since he came off the DL.
He should be very well rested for 2 innings in either game 4 or game 5 to help lock the game down and get us to game 6 with Nate on the hill (and no I dont expect us to win out at Fenway, Houston’s offense is going to wake up at some point)

I certainly won’t count on it, but I see now evidence that Houston has the pitching to slow down the Sox. It could very easily be 3-0 right now.

It should be.

True but I think we will see a lot of Javier, Graveman, and Pressly the next couple days with Houston a bit shell shocked right now

I don't 'expect' the Sox to close it out at Fenway, but....well, yeah, I kinda do actually....

That's the thing. Their offense should wake up, but our pitching is rested and theirs is thrashed. Getting 6 from ERod last night was critical for winning the next couple of games. Houston is going with Greinke and has to hope he can give them some innings. Sox are starting Pivetta, but had Houck and Whitlock well rested.

Houston burned their Game 4 starter on Saturday. Garcia went 3 last night. They are really on the ropes.

Sleepy Good Morning GIF by Hello All

They were interviewing Reggie Jackson on nesn outside the park....he and rice were slobbering all over each other. I wish TC woulda, in his best Matt Farley imitation, dropped a "remember that time Billy Martin pulled you out of right field in the middle of an inning here at Fenway? I do...that was cool"

That would've been awesome....

Our constant struggles with scoring after the fourth inning all playoffs long finally bit us in the ass.
And that strike 3 that wasn’t called by Laz didn’t help either. How a guy that bad at balls and strikes gets a job behind the plate in a playoff game is baffling to me.
Who decides the umpiring? Just MLB? Does the umpiring union have input so they can sneak in their bad senior members to the crews.
At any rate, some Vegas lines went from the Sox being the favorite to win the WS before Altuves HR to Houston now being the favorite.
And how do you decide to throw Altuve a fastball first pitch to start the 8th. The guy is super aggressive. Throw a slider down and away and see if he bites.

Let's get with the program on electronic balls and strikes...so many bad calls (both ways)...can't understand why they wouldn't want to clean that up... Not that difficult, give the ump an earpiece and get on with it...

Horrific umpiring. There is a site that shows the missed calls for each game, and this was the worst of the playoffs by a sizable margin. Some of them very critically harmful for Boston.

I also think it was dumb to bring in Eovaldi. Use the guys in the pen who are used to doing this.

Gotta win tonight.

You have Laz Diaz umpiring what the hell did MLB think was gonna happen. He was equally bad for both sides. There does need to be a grading system like the NFL does having the top officials for playoff games. Big games should be handed to umps by performance not by seniority.

There will still be issues with an electronic strike zone. How about having someone in the booth their only job is to call balls and strikes that’s it with the tv at their disposal.

Just take it out of the hands of the dude standing behind the plate. I've started calling them "pro rasslin' calls"... Like, everyone saw Mr Fuji throw salt in the guy's eyes, except the referee who just lets the match continue. Everyone saw the ball was over the plate, but the ump calls it a ball and we play on...same difference.

Hey not the results we all wanted, but the bats have to show up in Texas
Someone corrected me and said Renfro is an “elite “ right fielder. I’m not seeing it. Minor point.
Btw I do agree with JS - let Avoldi try to finish the inning. You put him in after short rest, and yes bases loaded after a walk, But go to the dance.with who you brought.

Maybe nitpicking but lord.

Umpire Scorecard is a great tool. Diaz had the fourth lowest strike zone accuracy of all umpires this season. To your point, amazing that they don’t use that data in a better way.

It was his throw day. It was a set amount of pitches and he’s ready for friday

All the throws he made were more stressful than just a throw day. To me I wouldn’t have gone with him unless it hit extra innings.
I would have used Houck and Whitlock to cover the final 3 innings.
