Red Autry

As Rutgers illustrates, even bringing in two lottery picks including the #1 or 2 pick can't turn a bad program around. Rutgers is 14-16 and in 15th place in the Big 10. That's not a typo. 15th....
They don’t care. They’re set for life in the Mid 10

Keeping Autry around because you're worried about losing a top 40 level recruit is objectively hilarious. I'm sure Kiyan would've re committed to Cuse anyways. Their fans thought they'd get the young/talented Ark St coach that runs an Oats style offense with recruiting connections in NY. Now some other school is gonna scoop him up.

Now if Autry gives you an 8/9 seed type of season, you're stuck with him for another season because he showed improvement. This makes me very happy.

I’ve been following college basketball since the dream season, stayed up super late for random west coast games not involving UConn back in the day, still do not miss any UConn games, watch plenty of other non big east games, and genuinely did not know the name of Syracuse’s current head coach. I was embarrassed to admit this but thought this says more about the sad state of affairs with their program.

This is right. We can and should revel in their misery, but they'll find someone who will get them back to relevance.
Easy to say that. We'll see what happens. You could argue that if Autry doesn't work out, their next hire will either bring the program back, or it will become even more irrelevant. They haven't been ranked ONCE this decade. That's crazy to think about it, but shows you bad things haven gotten. We see what has happened to BC, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Miami (outside of a random run) etc in the ACC. And so many coaches have retired. It's become a terrible BB conference.

The other problem is it is harder than ever to pry coaches away from P5 programs. The SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 can and will keep their coaches. As an example, Michigan got word that Indiana might, might have interest in Dusty May, and he immediately got an extension, in his first year. I don't think Cuse is going to be able to hire an established coach from a P5 program.

So they will have to go the mid-major route. Sometimes that works out. The coach from Arkansas St makes a lot of sense as he has Upstate NY ties. But by waiting, they may lose out on him this hiring cycle.

I always give Benedict, and Herbst credit. They knew they had to pull the plug on Ollie, and they had a good idea they could get Hurley, and they made the move. And we still got lucky that Hurley really wanted this job, because Pitt was offering more years, and more money. I know it's easy to say that it was obvious Ollie should be fired, but think of the $$$ situation the AD was dealing with, and we hadn't even been invited to the Big East yet.

The sliding doors moment where Hurley goes to Pitt and we hire Frank Martin, and we're already likely onto the next guy by now. Crazy how lucky we've been as a program.

In the NIL era, who cares about the recruiting class coming in. Syracuse made the mistake of hiring an assistant coach who had no head coaching experience and it shows. Autry is just not a good coach and keeping him for an extra year just delays the inevitable. My guess is that the buyout is too much for Syracuse to fire him now. Remember, Syracuse, like all schools, has to start revenue sharing and they are probably taking a haircut on their ACC revenues.

No surprise, but the Cuse AD announced Red Autry will be back next year for his 3rd season. Rumor is a lot of this is the fact that he has a good recruiting class coming in, including Melo's kid. Would think next year is a make or break year for him. Rumor also is Cuse is really behind with NIL.

Adrian will be back next year," Wildhack said during a local radio appearance on ESPN101 Radio in Syracuse. "But that comes with expectations."Autry has two ESPN 100 recruits: Sadiq White and Kiyan Anthony. They are coming to the program this fall.

Translation: His buyout is too high right now, we'll get rid of him next year.

I’m a Carmelo Anthony fan and wish the best for his son but a program expecting the #36 ranked recruit to come in and turn it around is delusional, particularly in the transfer portal era. Such unrealistic expectations when paired with his dad’s legacy
I am not…selfish player wanting to score and get rebounds for the sake of HOF and basically could not be bothered to defend. Not a team player and his NBA rap was selfish.

Disagree, they got stuck because Boeheim stayed too long and then they made the dreaded decision to hire a former player which almost never works out. A top coach would turn around Cuse in a hurry.
Yeah, if any potential one & done thought that Syracuse had a great coach, I imagine they’d be okay with spending 9 months there.

Syracuse is in trouble. They are losing everyone from next year, though the players are not very good. Freeman and Moore shelved themselves after seeing that dumpster fire. He brought in only seniors from the portal this year. Everyone they brought in is graduating and they are going to have to build around 4 freshman. Their NIL is poor and Autry is a poor evaluator of talent and not a good game day coach. They don't have the money to bring in multiple guys in that can play to a higher level. They got bad at the worst time.

Can't post this is the March NCAA thread because uconngb has had be blocked for 5+ years, so putting it here

You know you’re in the big leagues when basketball doesn’t matter.

Maybe it's time to play the Nate Oats card they put up their sleeve a few years back, eh?

NC State just fired their coach, who made the Final Four last year. Not saying that is the right move, but teams aren't waiting around too long to make moves.

Finally clicked on this thread to find out who or what Red Autry is. Maybe a new BBQ place or a country singer? A ginger haired recruit? Nope, evidently he coaches the most irrelevant basketball program in all of southern Canada. The anonymity is deserved.

Well this is a giant yikes. Amazing they are running it back for another year.

Wow that does not inspire any confidence at all. Very easy to speak to your fans for a minute about how you are all going to work so hard to get the program back where it belongs, yikes
