A movie can prefer a view point, and even have an agenda, and not mock an entire religion. Do I really need to point that out? I guess so.

I said "it's a movie" because of course there needed to be some dramatic events, like a dark horse candidate unexpectedly arriving. Within the film universe, that's not "ridiculous." It's a movie, not a documentary about Vatican politics.

I think your other criticism reflected a startling level of naivete. Everything is political. One of the Cardinals was actually forced out of the running on the basis of a note just like in the film.

Yes, it's not a documentary about Vatican politics it's a ridiculous Hollywood movie about a papal conclave. You're incredibly naive if you think Hollywood would greenlight something like this based on the most sacred traditions for Islam and Judaism but I don't think you really believe that.

Becoming Led Zeppelin. Thought this was really good. As a long time fan of the band I knew about the "new Yardbirds" but didn't know all the earlier aspects of how these guys each got start. Bonham and Plant were linked somewhat early on. Page and John Paul Jones both went heavily into the London session scene. Had no idea how many records those guys played on, it's pretty incredible. Then the Yardbirds breaking up and Page wanting to continue led to the formation of the band. I really appreciated that Page and JPJ had acquired so much studio knowledge and enough money that they made the first album with no label, then shopped it to labels. Allowed them to completely control their music. There's some very rare interviews with Bonham in this and you can really see the guys react when they hear his voice. Highly recommended.

Yes, I think there have been many movies about other religions that could very much offend some people. Orthodox Jewish sects are a common target, for example. I think the Muslim religion is usually portrayed negatively. Also, you keep pretending like the movie mocks Catholicism or its traditions. It just doesn't. The movie and the novel on which it was based take great pains to be accurate in showing the traditions. You're taking exception with a single plot point, which has nothing to do with the religion or its traditions. Obviously, Fiennes' character goes against his religion in making his choice at the end. That's not mockery.

I enumerated the two assertions made therein, both of which were quite uncontroversial. Also, Pope Leo's brother confirmed that the Pope-to-be watched the movie in advance of the conclave. You keep ignoring that for some reason?

Finally, everybody else here seems to know how to use the spoiler filter. I get that the movie gave you a sad but don't ruin it for those who haven't seen it. It's quite good, so they should watch it.

The entire movie hinges on "Cardinal" Benitez and his character makes a mockery of the papal conclave and the religion. Even if you throw out the socio-political ridiculous plot contrivance of him having a uterus he never would've gotten a single vote because he never would've been allowed there, you keep ignoring that for some reason. This plot point and other portrayals of the cardinals are distasteful and offensive to many Catholics, bishops, and other clergy. It's not distasteful and offensive to you so you don't care. I wasn't at all surprised by it, it's Hollywood being Hollywood. If my spoiler keeps any posters from watching it, I saved them two hours.

I've read criticism by Catholics and your reaction is more unhinged than any of them.

Whether to watch is for them to decide, and, given the overwhelmingly positive reaction here and in the real world, they may well have chosen to watch it but for you ruining it with your temper tantrum. John is one such person. He's not thanking you, believe me.

Anyone can watch what they want to watch. You can call me an alter boy, you can call my reaction to the movie unhinged. I can say you're wildly intolerant of the beliefs of others.
I can call you clueless if you think the book and movie took great pains to be accurate in showing the traditions.

"Electra" (2024) hit my radar at some point, I can't even remember why. Wasn't released to U.S. theaters until recently, I just streamed it on hoopla. Odd film, but it kept my interest. A journalist and his photographer girlfriend are doing a profile on a rock star, interviewing him in Rome. The rock star's girlfriend is a performance artist. She has a huge house somewhere in a small village in the Italian country side, the two couples soon go there to continue working on the profile. Or at least that was the way it was set up. It becomes clear not everyone is who they claim to be. I won't say any more than that. I wasn't familiar with the two male leads, but the females are played by Maria Bakalova and Abigail Cowen. So it had that going for it.

I think it’s funny how so many people latched onto the narrative that they had to watch the movie to know how to Conclave.

To be fair I watched it a second time after the real Conclave and I enjoyed much more. Not that I didn’t like it the first time. But my criticism still remains. The twist inside the twist seems extra. But I guess good things tend to have a taste of controversy.

Superjohn has already spoiled everything so here it goes.

The old Pope knew there would be funny business. So that’s why he kept Cardinal Lawrence as the Dean to curb any funny business with Tremblay (Blame Canada). This is obvious to all.

What is also obvious from the first time you see him is that Benitez is going to be Pope.

I don’t think the Old Pope elevated Cardinal Benitez to secret Cardinal to make him Pope. I think that was basically just miraculous. After the terror attacks and Tremblay’s actions. Benitez was rightly seen as better than all of them. He was bad ass Cardinal, working in all the worst trouble spots, seeing the worst humanity has to offer and yet emerges uncorrupted with intact faith.

The fact that he had some lady parts that he didn’t even know about basically his entire life doesn’t make him anything but a man.

Mickey 17 (2025).

This is a fun story, original and surprising. But good golly, this is a director who never checks his self-indulgence at the door. Scenes go on and on with no real advancement of drama or the story especially in the second half of the film. This is a 137 minute film that would have been so much better cutting out 30 minutes.

Robert Pattinson is terrific as Mickey, his comic chops and timing are very good. He plays a reprintable man, on a large crowed spaceship, who is given tasks that will kill him. Over and over. Most of the film making is fine, performances, sets, cinematography, special effects, etc, with the caveat that someone needed to edit this into a taut, watchable movie. I wanted it to end. Two stars.
 
Nonnas. Cute movie with Vince Vaughn as Joe Scaravella a guy in Brooklyn who grew up with a lot of Italian cooking from his mom, grandmother and others. Shift forward and his mom has passed. He's drawn to recreate old recipes from his youth. He decides to use the life insurance money to open a restaurant in Staten Island and use Italian grandmothers to cook the food. Impressive cast of nonnas includes Lorraine Bracco, Brenda Vaccaro, Talia Shire and Susan Sarandon. His best friend Bruno (Joe Manganiello) helps him build out the restaurant. He also runs into an old HS flame Linda Cardellini, who is neighbors with Brenda Vacarro. This is funny, heart warming and enjoyable. Based on a true story.

Linda Cardellini is a really underrated actress. She will be one of those actresses that will get nominated and win for something kind of mediocre when she is in her mid-60's and it will be more of a lifetime achievement award for the emmys/oscars she should have been nominated for and won when she was in her prime.

She's also really an underrated beauty. Feels like she's the 2nd fiddle, not most attractive, but still attractive woman in so many things, starting all the way back with Scooby Doo. Have to have a lot of confidence to do that. Kind of like Beverly D'Angelo in Vacation.

I watched Final Destination Bloodlines and I really enjoyed it. It helps that I am a big fan of the franchise too. Like all of them except #4.
 
Lift (2024). This is NOT a review. That wouldn't be fair as I stopped watching after 51 minutes of this 106 minute film. Kevin Hart vehicle. He plays a genius master thief. Have at it.
 
Novocaine (Paramount+). Dumb fun. I'm certain if one wanted to examine the physiology of being numb to pain and how the hero couldn't have survived/rebounded from many of his injuries, one could have a field day. But that would be missing the point. I don't recall seeing this progeny of Quaid/Ryan in anything before, but he did a solid job as the lead. Sweet romantic story goes along with with a very good Amber Midthunder. You could do much worse than watch this one.

Finally saw it, really enjoyed it. Just one more note, while she wasn't on screen much I thought Drea de Matteo was good as Joe Manganiello's wife. Can't even remember the last thing I saw her in.
