Recently watched movies 2025

"Suze" streaming on Kanopy. Not sure it ever hit theaters. I saw a trailer for it recently, then next thing I know it's streaming. I liked it. I've seen Michaela Watkins in a bunch of stuff but she's usually not the star. She was good. Without over explaining, through a series of circumstances she ends up bonding with her daughter's ex-boyfriend, played by Charlie Gillespie. He comes off as a likable doofus, but there's a little bit more to him. It's mostly mildly amusing, not hilarious, but has some more emotional parts. Basically everybody has gone through some stuff in life, it can be hard, try to be nice to people.

edit--filmed in Hamilton, Ontario, looks like most of the cast is Canadian. Not Michaela but she was born in Syracuse, NY, so that's almost in Canada, right?

Both are French films. Hulu has the dubbed versions of each or in French with subtitles. I do not like dubbed films so I went with the original format in French. I thought both were very well done and some of the better movies I have seen in a few years.

Fish ? From the trailer alone, it seems that fish didn't quite fit into the broader world of animals all getting along. Not sure how a species goes from trusted friend of the animal world to lunch.

Or am I confusing this with Flow ? I think so.

An absolute cult classic. Space Herpes. Enough said.
 
Becoming Led Zeppelin - wish it had been in IMAX like it was supposed to be, but really great stuff. Includes newly discovered audio from an old John Bonham interview, spliced with current day interviews with Paige, Plant, and Jones. Only covers from the band forming through 1970, and Zep I and II. Quite a bit of live show footage. One of the key bits was that Jones and Paige were established bigtime studio musicians, both musically and experiences. Really helps them be their own band without much interference from outside forces.

The thing that stood out to me was that it was clearly a celebration of how great they really were. My wife noted the same. She appreciated the upbeat tone. If you're a fan, I highly recommend it.

This is correct. I am sure the dubbed versions is fine especially if you do not like reading subtitles like my wife. I do not like dubbed because I just find that the dubbed voices do not always capture the correct tone and expression the scene is putting out.

Agreed, and sometimes it's pretty obvious they get B or C grade actors to do the dubbing. That can take me right out of the experience.
 
Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) & Jack Quaid (The Boys).

Not bad! The twist comes early, and I saw it coming, but it's not about that. A, breezy, interesting spin on a common SciFi trope.

The World's Fastest Indian. Wanted to see this for years, never pulled the trigger. Based on a true story of Burt Munroe a New Zealand speed motorcycle racer played by Anthony Hopkins. He's a cantankerous but charming old guy. His house is a big shed/workshop. The young boy next door helps him. His parents complain about Burt, you can tell they love him and what he gives back to the kid. It is set in 1967 and Munro is working on his 1920's V-Twin Indian motorcycle. He desperately wants to get to Bonneville Utah to see how fast it will go. From there it's a wild journey will Burt meeting and befriending people of all kinds on the way there. He still holds the under 1000cc world land speed record. Really enjoyed this. The tale doesn't mirror Munro's real life but the characters are interesting and it's a good story.

I saw this movie when it first came out, and I have seen it a few times, but not for for many years now. I recall that I liked it quite a bit when I did see it. Certainly would not mind seeing it again at some point.

A Complete Unknown. This Was excellent. Timothee Chalamet is phenomena as are most of the supporting cast. Everyone sings their parts. I can quibble aboutbthe fixation on the switch from folk to rock but it’s a story worth telling.

She plays Elizabeth Sparkle, a former young starlet who has a fitness show (think Jane Fonda). She's over 50 and her producer, played by Dennis Quaid and named "Harvey" wants to mover her out. He's disgusting in every respect. She hears about something called The Substance, a very sketchy thing that can restore youth. Enter Margaret Qualley as "Sue" but basically, young Elizabeth. This is where it becomes more of a horror film as they two are one, but don't really have the same goals. Qualley just oozes sexuality (I have since learned that's the case in all her films). There is copious nudity in this from both of them (some may be prosthetics or CGI). It's been listed among best picture nominees, I don't get it. It's badly edited and runs way too long. It's evidently an "inside Hollywood" film that speaks to them, but I'm not sure it does much for the rest of us. It also has a very weird timeframe, it looks and feels like the 80s, right down to the aerobics shoes, but is evidently now. It's ok, but at over 140 minutes, choose carefully.

After a birthday dinner (hers) out, My wife and I got home with three cocktails in us and picked this flick. I am damaged from it. Like, questioning what I saw and why Moore won a GG. My wife and I fought off sleep while watching this.

Quaid was a horrific character and his eating scene had me cringing, looking away.

And that conglomerate beast at the end...

Wow.
 
Worst show ever. Just watched Complete unknown. Chalamette deserves best actor. Dylan hate for Hollywood will deny that

Yes, aside from "Margaret Qualley looks good naked" it has few redeeming qualities. And even that doesn't exactly make it a great choice for you and your wife. I get what they were going for in the first half of the movie, and Demi was pretty good at that point.

Here's my other problem though, they're trying to show how age and beauty requirements in Hollywood causes former starlets to be pushed aside and become desperate, yet that doesn't really happen anymore. Look at 59 year old Connie Nielsen at the Oscars yesterday.

I had never heard of it and would never have watched it had I not been watching the Oscars the other night and saw it win best animated feature.

Flow, streaming on Max.

Ahhhh….it’s a movie. No dialogue, which was fine. Looked pretty rough because it was made on the cheap and the plot is occasionally a fever dream. It’s basically an animal buddy pic. As a cheap movie, it’s interesting, but not good.

And then I saw the latest Venom movie. It’s hard as hell to make a bad movie with Tom Hardy, but kudos to all involved for pulling it off. It’s awful.
 
Venom: The Last Dance. Watched because someone here said it was pretty good. It is better than Venom 2, I'll say that. I liked the hippie alien nuts. But it's not good and I just wasn't really interested in it. Found myself easily distracted.

Baby Driver. Rewatch. This is quite good. The music is really different than what you get in most modern films. Ansel Elgort is Baby, the driver of a crime crew that varies and is put together by Kevin Spacey (who looks a bit rough) playing a classic Kevin Spacey bad guy character. The truth of why Baby is doing this comes out. He also meets Lilly James in a Diner. She's adorable as she pretty much always is and shares his musical interests. He's trying to get out of the crime crew driver business and run away with her.

If you didn't know it happened, you'd say it was nonsense. But they absolutely freaked out in Newport. Amazing

The GG award was just another "her turn" kind of thing and because it was supposedly some kind of commentary on the objectification of women. Movie was bizzare on many levels, especially the last act that absolute lunacy
 
The Creator (2023)

So many tired old tropes in this incredibly stupid movie. The whole thing is basically designed to shame us into assuming that AI is great and anyone against it is a troglodyte. I'll keep it short. Imagine a really bad movie with Special effects and a style much like District 9.

AI has become a big deal. One day, AI nukes America killing a million people or so. America declares a Global War on AI, and Asia is where the last holdout of AI is because they are of course more enlightened than us.

Some lady makes an AI child that is the chosen one and can defeat the AI Doomsday Machine that America made. The child is the one!

Guess what happens!

I always find it interesting that Dune was also a post AI war world where humans had abandoned computers altogether.

Have you read the three prequels about the war against the machines? Those are worth it, or listen. I didn't like the others.

No. I probably should. It’s like a behind the scenes thing, but there’s Herbert basically envisioning an AI war vs People way way earlier than others.
