I watched it as well. My reaction was generally "meh".

Don't get me wrong, as you point out, there were some funny moments, but the novelty of breaking the fourth wall is gone at this point as is the novelty of crudity and sexual innuendo.

The plot, such as it is, was fairly vapid, even for a superhero movie. And I've never been a fan of the Loki series so the prominent role of the TVA really didn't resonate with me.

All that said, it was vaguely entertaining. Definitely not a movie I would watch again though.

Cool. Didn't know who she was. That is one very pretty stuntwoman.
 
Did the free trial w/ Starz, cancelled it, now I'm on to a free trial of Apple TV+. Did a double feature tonight with a bit of a theme. "The Family Plan" and "Ghosted." Both with an operative who has to juggle career with personal life, with fairly disastrous results. Neither was really anything new, both probably fairly forgettable, but enjoyable enough. Both had overblown climatic scenes that dragged a bit.

In the first Mark Wahlberg Mark Wahlberged his heart out. I don't think Michelle Monaghan has aged a day in the last 20 years. I like Zoe Colletti. Maggie Q is another actress who is cheating the aging process (hey she was in the same Mission Impossible movie as Michelle Monaghan, just realized that).

They really went heavy on the cameos in Ghosted. Maybe Chris Evans called in some favors, it was pretty much a Marvel reunion. Ana de Armas...enough said.


I don't usually catch the continuity snafus in movies, but there was a big one in Ghosted. There was a huge shootout in a restaurant with a rotating outer platform and stationary center. Bodies piled everywhere. A mechanical malfunction sped up the rotations and turned it into a centrifuge. While some objects were flying around the room...all the dead people had magically disappeared and were no longer there. Oopsie.

The Series are better than the movies on Apple+. Greyhound was quite good though. Agree with your take on those two movies.

Loki was the most low key interesting character left in that awful cinematic universe.

Now that I know it’s free, I’ll give Deadpool a whirl.

The first Deadpool was great because it was so Un Marvel.

I just finished watching it and I thought it was absolutely terrible. I've been a fan of Ryan Reynolds movies, but his schtick is growing old. He seems to play the same character in every movie, +/- the profanity/vulgarity depending on the target audience.

I think it is growing old a bit, but I also think it's the kind of thing that needs to be well executed to work. It wasn't in that movie.
 
Man I'm getting cheated on my free Apple + trial. Power has been out for almost 48 hours. Can't watch nothing.
 
as an aside, I just learned that this actor was in Animal House and My Cousin Vinny. There should be a thread for Most Successful Underrated Actors. I didn't know his name and he's been acting for 47 years

I'd add Matchstick Men to this list, just watched it in the first time in forever last night, inspired by this thread.
 
It was throwback night last night. "Matchstick Men" is entertaining. Nic Cage, Sam Rockwell, Alison Lohman in a little tale about con artists and sudden unexpected paternal responsibilities.

Also watched "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." I'd argue that was the beginning of Robert Downey, Jr.'s career renaissance. Seems largely overlooked, but very enjoyable twisty neo noir with a fair dose of snarkiness. RDJ, Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan, Corbin Bernsen.

Both almost 20 years old, have held up well.

That’s because you are old and crusty and probably didn’t understand 75% of the jokes.

It was perfectly watchable but not exceptional.
 
Alien Romulus

This is most recent installment of the Alien series. The plot essentially was a modernized version of the original Alien in much the same way that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a modernized version of A New Hope. To me, the Prometheus diversion in Alien was only fair, so I enjoyed the throwback to the original movie. It does have some references to the second movie Aliens and the Prometheus goo, but mostly it is Alien with a new wrinkle or two. I enjoyed it.

Alien Romulus. Looks like @CL82 and I chose the same Saturday night movie. I was a little concerned that the formula would be stale by now but they did a really nice job of weaving a new story with solid characters around the original. Basically it’s a story interrupted by the aliens. A few scares and a lot of tense moments. Cailee Spaney looks like a rising star as the protagonist Rain (she was in Civil War too). Rain is quite clever and that’s a welcome wrinkle. One fun nod to Ripley in this. No spoilers. Good movie. Free on Disney+

I'm hoping it was the absurd end of this awful multiverse direction they went in and this is just them making fun of themselves.
