why do people post in the heat of the moment with these sky is falling sentiments?

Are you watching the games this year? This team for the talent level to be great and are such underachievers it makes me puke and I am sure Calhoun is wondering what did I get myself into?

Next year the talent level drops dramatically on top of it.

Calhoun is going to quit after this season. What a lack of effort and balls with this team today.

We will lose Lamb and Drummond only adding Omar Calhoun.

UConn will become Seton Hall next year. Ugh

;):D:p:):cool::rolleyes::confused: :oops::(:eek::mad:

Rebounding is mostly about position.

We don't block out and let guys get good position. They have good effort.
I stand by my post from 1:00 today.

Because they had a distinct talent advantage in AAU and high school ball, AO & AD were far superior to the other players. As a result, they never learned learned to box out. In addition, as a previous poster said, their bball IQ is not high. They just relied on their talent. We do need to hire a "big man" coach on the staff.

You can't box out when you're going up for blocks. For the past decade, our defensive strategy has been to scare opponents at the rim. This comes at the detriment to our rebounding, especially when your help-side defense is also sagging and contesting shots. Against a strong rebounding team like West Virginia, that's going to be exploited for offensive rebounds. Is it time for a paradigm shift? Maybe not, though the strategy should probably be tweaked versus specific opponents. I will say that our current shot-blockers are not nearly as intimidating as Emeka/Thabeet so it doesn't seem like we're actually altering as many shots as we have in the past.

That said, I agree with others that this team hasn't been boxing out, save for Giffey and occasionally Oriakhi. It's gotta become more consistent.

The win was awesome but the fact remains if they don't start rebounding better and boxing out they are going to struggle to win games

UConn's regular season D had trouble last year too.

Then they put it all together in the tourney. Make teams rely on outside shots and defend the arc. Go for blocks in the paint.

They clamped down on Arizona, Kentucky and Butler.

This will bother all the "chuckleheads" who are deeply offended by someone questioning the "kids" and espically their effort, but here is the reality.

A huge factor in this losing streak is rebounding and what is rebounding? Effort.

Go back and watch the last three games and watch the players on UConn, outside of Roscoe Smith, when a shot is in the air, how many of them box out? Boxing out and rebounding is 80% effort and hustle. They got crushed on the glass in the 1st half against Cuse, Cuse is 117th in the country in rebounding. PC outrebounded, for Christs sake Marquette out rebounded them and Marquette has no one taller than 6'7. Crowder had 12 boards and he is 6'6. Nova crushed them on the boards.

If the team continues to watch the ball go up and not take the time and put in the effort to box out and push people around for a rebound we will continue to lose. Since Blaney has taken over we have outrebounded 2 teams, DePaul and Seton Hall, both wins.
Perfect post. Ive said it all year. Questioning their effort is not being a bad fan or being dumb. This team does lack basic basketball intensity, but somehow we managed to pull it out today. I have no idea how. We got slaughtered on the boards. Lamb disappeared for 20 minutes. Roscoe did nothing, Boat was sloppy. The refs were awful (again...) and somehow we won!! I guess Ill take it, but we really need to start boxing out. At this point I have no idea how we will start now. We play great D and stop them on the first possession like ten times in a row..BUT...let them score six times on 2nd and 3rd chances. Calhoun always talks about getting 3 stops in a row. We do it all the time, except we negate it by literally never boxing out. We have so much going for us and a lot of other issues, but rebounding is really the one thing holding us back. And as you said, it really all comes back to effort, which is why this team is so frustrating!!

I see him boxing when shots go up maybe not everytime but rebounding is not where he needs most improvement, alley oops no problem either but frankly laying blame at an 18 year old freshman's feet is silly IMO because I think he has done well , but I guess he was expected to come in and dominate his first year because he is a lottery pick.
Drummond does the Gavin Edwards: stand up straight and jump up and down over and over, tipping the ball, but never actually grabbing it.

I agree 100%. Also our guys seem to be out of position. Most anyone can block out if you are in position underneath the basket. The problem is we overplay on defense and "scramble" to get into rebounding position. That is not a good.

Our bigs should of dominated the Hilljacks, they have to play better and I have never seen us give up some many easy layups and back door cuts.

The last three games have got to be killing you. Take a blood pressure pill and chill out. Better yet, take the whole bottle and give us a day off from your crap.
